Queen of the Damned (2002)
Oh well never mind
I have watched almost every Vampire film there is and have my favourites. This one took the cake, a bit of an insult to vampire films. It took a great idea and tried to make it like Blade but failed miserably, the idea had merit but was slow in its build up and then a drop in
the climax with no real battle as such. Would not recommend you even get this one out, get Blade
instead, even if you have already seen it, it will leave you more satisfied with the 'taste for blood' vampire film Rate this a 3/10 - poor performance
The Pledge (2001)
Do not watch
Jack played his part well in this film, it's a shame it was so boring. A film that could have been great made into a sliding line of boredom, if only the editor had clipped more from it, it may have been a little more fast paced. Jack took he role well and played it extremely well, something not seen from him since the shining. His supporting characters were quite good but the film let itself down. I would not advise watching this, this is one of the most boring films I have ever seen. I would give it a 4/10
Antitrust (2001)
Tribute to microsoft
Interesting film and leads you into a path of deciet involved with a lot of computer tech stuff. Almost looks like they had it in for microsoft. The lead bad guy seems to look like Bill Gates. A few small holes in the film but a definite must see, am surprised it was not promoted more. This film is well made and has clever twists all the way through it.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
Interesting
I have to rave about the computer graphics in this film, they are more than outstanding, the attention to detail, faces and hands, but the clothing was not quite as good. But it was incredible anyway, after 4 years of slaving away these guys deserve a medal. The film itself is not so good, the plot is weak and not all that easy to follow, one may say you need to play the game, but it is not necessary. I came out of this not feeling 'Wow what a film' I can only rate this film a 5/10, but the graphics a 10/10, t is the whole reason for the film, but we wait to see what Lord of the Rings has to show.
A Murder of Crows (1998)
Bring on the Fugitive
This film bears some similarity to the fugitive, which may be why I liked it so much. Cuba Gooding Junior is outstanding and plays one of his best parts yet. This keeps you going right to the end with an interesting twist, it will leave you asking just wat is the point of some judicial systems. A man gets 'done in the eye' for standing up for what is right only to fall back on what is wrong.
I rate this film 8/10
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Good old fashioned horror
This film is right up there with the films of the Vincent Price era and really good watch. Not too frightening with the added special effects which are enough to give you the creeps. Being set in an old asylum immediately gives it the setting to make you on edge for the rest of the film. No corny jump out, in your face happenings. It's just a good old fashioned horror and enjoyable to boot. the set design and scene setting keeps you thinking something very suddenand scary is about to happen. As a horror I would rate this 10/10 and will be adding it to my DVD collection.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
Good - too long
Good film, excellent cinematography. I love Al Pacino, he was outstanding. Only problems were the film seemed to not know where it was going exactly, there were long scenes that made the film too long and a bit sleepy. I am not American which may add to the problem of not understanding the game of American Football. Myself and my friends found this film a little on the less exciting side. My rating will have to be 7/10 - Could have been edited a bit more.
The Green Mile (1999)
Moving and Outstanding Movie
This is up there with the best films I have ever seen, always dubious of Stephen King books made into films but this is one of the most moving and emotional films I have ever seen. Plenty of films are made about wrongly convicted felons in films, this looks at a different angle to this. I have bought this on DVD and intend to watch it many times over. Frank Darabont has outdone himself with this film and will be sure to make many more fantastic films in the future. I would recommend this film to all to watch. I can't praise this film enough I give this film a 10/10
The Hurricane (1999)
Outstanding and Moving Film
I started watching this film with unknown expectation as I knew little about Rubin and his plight. This film stirred my emotions and has heightened my praise for Denzel. I watched an interview with Rubin Carter on the DVD and could see Denzel as the exact person this man is. He played the role with an intensity that 'made him' Rubin. This is an outstanding film and Denzel definitely deserved the Golden Globe and I believe more. The idea that a man who is innocent decides to live as a free man in prison the way he did, showed courage and integrity in his belief. I recommend this film to everyone and anyone, it should be shown to anyone who is studying the civil rights movement, school children and the like. I give this a 9/10 - A must see Film!
The Patriot (2000)
Interesting and enjoyable
Another historic film by Mel Gibson, enjoyable and frightening. One gets the feeling that Mel has something against the British, second film where he goes hard out to kill English troops. Although I am 1/2 English myself, this film made my blood boil toward the English so I can understand what would make a person do the things he did. This film grabs at your emotion with a bit of everything including comedy, so it is not quite as heavy as Braveheart. From me this is recommended viewing. 7/10 Maltesers
Big Momma's House (2000)
Stakeout, here we come again
For those who have seen 'Stakeout' this film brings back that old idea and puts a little twist on it. Martin Lawrence and his style of humour is great in this film set in Suburbia where everyone's business is public knowledge. His partner is minor but essential as his 'sidekick'. I recommend you wait for this to come out on video as it is not a big screen film, but a good laugh all the same
Scarfies (1999)
Must See!
Started watching this film a little apprehensive - seemed to be much like other films made in New Zealand. Made you question what you would do in this position, a little slow to start but a very enjoyable film. Must see films for anyone who enjoys New Zealand films such as Goodbye Pork Pie and Smash Palace.
