Ghost (1990)
1/10
Just plain dire...
10 July 2000
Maybe I'm a heartless soul but I hated the combination of sickly slush and glamour that is Ghost. I'd rather spend an evening shelling peas. The problem with describing this film is where to start.

Maybe wooden acting and over sentimentalised script. Or complete lack of any sense of dramatic realism. Or poor direction and obvious plot progression.

I've enjoyed romantic films before, but I'd recommend settling down to an old black and white movie, or anything in preference to this.

1/10.

Das Boot (1981)
10/10
The best ever submarine film.
10 July 2000
The Hunt for Red October, U571, Crimson Tide; any submarine film you care to name are all overshadowed by the greatest of them all - Das Boot.

However it is more than just a submarine film. As a commentary on humans in extreme conditions it is also unmatched. Forget the glamour and glitz of the Yanks at war in U571 and the slick underwater activities of Red October. To be in with the crew of Das Boot is as near as most of us will come to the real thing.

All I can say is just watch it and be prepared for the best roller-coaster ride of your life.

(Incidentally, if German isn't your mother tongue, then I would certainly recommend watching a subtitled version over a dubbed one (having seen both available English versions). The atmosphere just doesn't cut it the same with a dubbed voice.)

The film is character driven, but it also has a plot that'll keep you guessing right up to the end.

Grab some mates and settle down to one of the best and possibly most shocking experiences of your life.
