The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
Steadily becomes better and better
From episode 6, this first season of a new series has actually become quite good. It is clear that the budget has been relatively limited, but the story manages to develop. And the two young male actors are acting very well. I still give it a chance. I believe that 'Fear the walking dead' also had a couple of really awful episodes - and has now improved so much. I hope that the same will be the case for World Beyond.
Valea Mutã (2016)
Crime story with a young gay man in the center of it all
HBO crime story, casted and filmed in Romania. A strong woman is fighting police traitors, and a young gay man caught in the middle of it all. The main character (played by Theodor Soptelea) is really trustworthy. if not for other reasons, you should definitely watch this mini-series just for his excellent performance.
Bullet Head (2017)
A film about animals (dogs as well as humans)
Highly underestimated! Very realistic plot with small gangsters, a real villain (Banderas), and some beautiful dogs. If you are a dog lover (or just animal lover) you MUST see this film.
Tell Me a Story (2018)
Wonderful storytelling...
This is brilliant storytelling. The way these three stories are told and intervening with each other is wonderfully surprising - all the way through 10 episodes. And then it all is carried out in ingenious accordance with the three original Grimm stories. Deep respect, also to the original Mexican manuscript.
Stonewall (2015)
Not an 'historically correct' film... But HEY - it is great!
This is a full blown Roland Emmerich film. Technically great (as all Emmerich's films). But also VERY respectful to those of us who suffered - and still suffers - oppression due to our sexuality.
It is certainly an utterly historically inaccurate film. Things happen - that could not - and did not happen.
But hey: Do you remember the small child with cancer - saved in the last minute in 'The Day after Tomorrow'? And the American president - that has to lead the attach on the spaceship in 'Independence Day'? Far over the top! But so much over the top that it is obviously just the director playing with all of us. And I love it.
The film is loaded with quite beautiful scenes with characters you either hate or love. I understand their feelings and actions. For a gay man like me, it is sometimes very emotional, not at least due to some great acting. Yes: these people actually do exist in the real world!
So watch this film as an Emmerich experience. It does not show how it was - exactly. It may not be adored by the 'political correct' gay community, this film is far too mainstream in it's access to historical accuracy. But it is a great and very entertaining and beautiful movie. Far, far too underrated!
Skyfall (2012)
Too much of all the all the bad stuff, too little of fun
Technically stunning, but it simply does not work as It used to do. Too many meaningless killings and the humor is totally absent. Everything is simply very serious, and I really missed all the funny small catchy scenes that has characterized former James Bond movies. I do not understand the psychology of the bad-ass villain, certainly not his 'homoerotic' appearance (apparently all his killings were not enough to make him sufficiently psychopathic). I usually love Badem and Dinch - but honestly here their acting is far from their usual standards. I guess I must blame the directing that has focused on shootings and explosions, and missed the story.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007)
Great CGI, nice stunts, and OK make-up...
I just saw this movie - and I liked it! Mainly because of the nice, imaginative and well-done CGI. Fight scenes and stunts are actually also quite good. OK - the storyline is definitely a B-film worthy (comparison to Tolkien would be blasphemy!), and the all-time present muzak is terrible and sometimes completely unnecessary. However, filming is technically quite good with extremely high contrast (which I really, really like a lot!). I also like the many close-ups of the beautifully make-up'ed, well-known actors (Stratham, Reynolds, Rhys-Davies, Liotta, Perlman, Sobieski). I did not know that this film had got so many bad reviews. I write this, because I think it deserves a slightly better reputation...
Revolution (1985)
Undervoted film, why?
This is one of the best historical films I have seen for long. I like the inclusion of children as main characters (usually forgotten in most other films, even though they have always been there ) - and the fantastic recreations of how life was in the end of the 1700s. Presentation of war time, war strategies (as in the British-American battle), the danger of being just ill and sick - or killed, the always presence of death, the dirty cities, the wonderful nature and landscapes. On top of this an interesting description of the interaction with the Indian tribes who in need had to take part on either side in the war. Most important, the story of a man who is forced to take action in his own life. This film is completely underscored in the votes - and I simply don't understand why!
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
A film that haunts you long after ...
I have seen many films. Some did move me. But this film simple beats me off the ground. And it not only blow me away, it haunts me! Maybe because I am gay. Maybe because it describes hidden feelings and emotions I know too well myself. Maybe because the story is just so damn good and the performances so moving. Maybe because so many small tales are hidden in the acting and storyboard that you are not able to cope with them all until long after you leave the cinema. Small short sequences from the film repeatedly returns to me, and I still find new treasures in these memories. Such an experience for one ticket's price! Thank you to the director and the actors for a outstanding and absolutely brilliant experience.
