Cinderella (2000)
I loved it...
It is not difficult for a die hard fairy tale enthusiast to get bored with all the different versions of Cinderella. However, i think that this one was all together unique. Kathleen Turner was EXQUISITE as the "Wicked Step Mother" true. But there were other elements to this version that made it equally fabulous. The fact that Cinderella "rescues" her father, and gains a backbone and stands up to her step mother were great. There is also a wonderful element of traditional magic, in the form of Cinderella's "fairy god mother" a mermaid/sea nymph who takes an interest in Cinderella. The low budget, special effects harkened back to Rogers and Hamerstein's version. Simple effects let the story take center stage.
Beauty and the Beast (1987)
A wonderful live action rendition of a classic Fairy Tale.
I adored this movie the first time I saw it when I was 16. I love fairy tales and especially like movies that try to stick to the original story. These stories have been around for hundreds of years before Disney and there are different versions of each in different countries. The sets and costuming of this version are beautiful. (All though some obviously date the film to the late eighties) Rebecca De Mornay is fantastic as the gracious loving creature that can love even a beast. The way that this is filmed it almost feels as though you are the proverbial fly on the wall, or the statue with eyes. I think it is a wonderful way to get kids interested in something besides cartoons.
