Il gabbiano (1977)
Absolutely brilliant
A rare gem penalized by distribution in the Seventies but rightly praised by most critics today. Bellocchio gives a very personal rendition of Cechov' s drama and thanks to Agosti's editing and great cast performances reaches outstanding results. Laura Betti's character is different fron the original one but so powerful to steal the scene. Remo Girone is perfect in his role and pierces the screen. Pamela Villoresi, Giulio Brogi and the rest of the cast are very good too. Also, I have to praise the choice of locations, Casale sul Sile near Treviso, a very lucky invention that added to the film a unique atmosphere, like Nicola Piovani's musical score. Not just a meditation about art, as you may read sometimes, but on human condition, love and meaning of life.
The Counselor (2013)
Another masterpiece from the pen of Cormac McCarthy
One of the best movies I've seen recently. I read a lot of negative comments on it and even my friends were divided (only some of them loved it) but I'm glad I didn't care, and forget about the stories regarding the difficulties between Scott and MacCarthy or about some inconsistencies. What is special about this movie are in my opinion the dialogues. Acting is terrific, (we all agree on this point) and Ridley Scott knows is jobs like no others, but what is really peculiar about this movie are the lines by McCarthy. It's the new American Tragedy, but also a meditation on human natures (the plural is necessary)or on Nature tout court... if you prefer. Also, it is a social and political pamphlet: The Mexican tank hidden in the darkness of the street, waiting, during the mass meeting near the end of the movie, explains why the fight against the drogue dealers cannot be won easily. It is not a movie one can forget easily: without the "beloved" happy ending, no wonder some people didn't like it. I wonder though what Nietzsche and Hitler would have thought of it, because somehow The Counselor reminds me both and at the end we don't know what to fear more: either the badness of the predator or the mediocrity of the prey. In two words: absolutely worthy.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Routine War Movie
A routine war movie well acted and directed but not particularly interesting nor spectacular, after all predictable and too rhetorical. A tribute to the soldiers and their families, certainly, but if you are not among them you may choose to watch something else. I read other reviews comparing this movie to "Saving Private Ryan"... it was misleading in my opinion. This movie reminds me more Black Hawk Down but it is far less spectacular and gripping. Battles scenes are quite realistic but the whole story is built around a small episode after all (big enough for those who took part in it, but what about the others?). If you like war movies give it a try but don't expect too much or you will end disappointed.
Noi credevamo (2010)
Avatar (2009)
The return of a Man called Horse
Let me say first of all that this movie is really well done and well worthy for its message is quite educative. I read that it was visually stunning and my friend told me the same. A joy for your eyes? yes, absolutely! but is that enough? In my opinion this movie lacks in originality: most ideas seem to be taken from "A Man Called Horse" a film by Elliot Silverstein, with Richard Harris, done in 1970. Other ideas remind me of "The Emerald forest" by John Boorman, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" (Eywa is the same of Gaia!) and "Pocahontas" (who inspired the character of Neytiri). All these movies had more pathos and had been far away more original than Avatar, even because in their own ways said something new. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong in getting ideas somewhere else, or in doing remakes, but don't expect too much enthusiasm from moviegoers with good memory (like me). I would like to add one last thing. For some reasons I still like to find some acting in the movies I watch, and when the main characters are computer done, or wear heavy make-up or masks, I find it difficult to feel any emotion, even when special effects are extraordinary, like in this case.
