Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)
Unexpected and funny
I think it was a great movie, despite that I had different expectations from it. My expectation was a cool fast bloody swordcutting movie with some style. Instead I got a slow pacing funny movie about a samurai-hitman waving with guns (instead of swords) and following a japanese code with rap as background music. It is a slow movie with lots of different cultures mixed in it (maybe too many). Although the message that I got from the movie (which I think was: read books) was a little bit over done, I still want to watch the movie for a second time, just to learn and understand the Samurai sayings more and the relationship of the cartoons and the killings (which I actually got at the end of the movie). And maybe understand the role of the mafia daughter more, who I think was actually ruling the mob bosses... If you liked Pulp Fiction, then I think you will appreciate this movie too. But if you are the typical fast action movie type, then please skip it, it's not worth it and it will be only annoying. I think it is a great movie and I will rent it for a second time, when I am more in the mood for it. 8/10
The Piano Lesson (1995)
Strange Movie
This movie is a weird mix of a ghost story and a drama. The story is in the beginning vague and when you continue watching it, it becomes clearer and clearer, but it does not suck you into the story and make you want to see how it ends, maybe because the director made it more dramatic then scary.
I do not remember any background music in the movie, which makes it more special. The music is coming from the actors themselves, which was amazing to me and I must say to the actors: well done!
X-Men (2000)
Very good introduction to the X-men!
I expected a lot from this movie and I was NOT disappointed after I have seen it. I think it is very good that they didn't try to summarize everything of the cartoons/comics in one movie, which they did in for example the movie "Spawn" (also a movie of which I had huge expectations of, but that movie turned out to be a huge disappointment). I know which characters has which super powers, so I was afraid that I had a lot of explaining to do to my girlfriend (who doesn't know the X-men at all) during the movie, but I didn't have to say a word. Well done!!! They clearly made an open ending and I can't wait for the X-men II with probally more characters and less explaining. Lets hope and pray that they'll keep the same cast as they have now, they all did a excellent job in the movie. This is just an introduction, people, which (to my opinion) couldn't have done better, so: makers of the movie "The X-men", please don't let me down by ruining it in the sequel, you have a good start. Score: 9/10
Tron (1982)
Pretty good for a movie from '82
I saw this movie last night for the first time in my life and I was quite amazed by the special effects and computer simulation. Usually you can see when a special effect is a special effect in movies, which can be annoying/irritating and can destroy the whole movie, but not in this movie.
In Tron it is also funny to see the feared relationship between humans and computers/machinery, which is similar in the more popular movies: Terminator and The Matrix. Although Tron has not as much action as in the movies I just mentioned, I definitely advise people to see this movie. Why? Because I think Tron is a milestone in movie history: the first battle between the human and the computer in a movie.
