Requiem for a Dream (2000)
the most beautiful movie ever made
this is not a movie about drug addiction. this is a movie about addiction to hope. every character in this film had high hopes about where their life would lead. sarah goldfarb wanted desperately to be on television. and she became obsessed with it. this movie is about expectations being shattered and thrown to the ground. everything starts out so lovely and beautiful with people in love and old women losing weight but soon all of their lives come spiraling down around them. nothing works out, everyone gets messed up and they all end up in worse states than when they started. if you see this movie, please do so with an open mind. do not disregard because it actually makes you feel real human emotions. embrace it and tell all your friends to see it. it should be required veiwing for every person.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
the most beautiful show on television
here's the thing, i am a buffy freak. i have seen every epsiode, i have all my favorites on tape. i am slowly but surely acquiring all DVD's. this show is like a drug. it's addicting and it will leave you reeling for it's affects. this show works so well because of joss whedon's brilliant mind and the way he can so aptly mix comedy and drama and horror and suspense and romance and sadness all into one flawless television series. this show is so much more realisitic than any of the other teen/college show. the monsters and vampires are metaphors for how unfair and crazy life can be. out of every show ever made this is my favorite because it takes life's difficulties head-on and never let's up. you will never see a calm episode of buffy the vampire slayer. each episode moves fast and keeps you on the edge of your seat. even the campy episodes with fish-men and inca mummy girls. i love this show and i will cry the day it stops. this show should not be overlooked because of it's silly title, or it's campy nature. it is truly a work of art to be treasured and cherished.
Devil in the Flesh 2 (2000)
much better than the original
this movie was soo much better than the original. jodi lyn is a true find. i will admit that this is a cheesy, campy movie but i totally enjoyed it. unlike the 1st one Debbie actually had a personality and this much better script gave her motives for actually doing what she did. all she wanted was to be loved. sure she was crazy but i totally think she was less crazy in this installment. it actually could stand on it's own without having to see the original. plus she is way sexier than rose magowan. great acting, great script, great star.
The Doors (1991)
an incredibly pointless movie
i don't have much to say about this awful movie except this: why was it called the doors when the whole movie was about Jim Morrison's sex life? and meg ryan? what the hell? this movie was so bad and so pointless and taught us absolutely nothing about the doors. like every other book or tv special or biography all it focused on was jim morrison and that is so not what the doors were.
Foxfire (1996)
this movie is horrible
i read all the other comments about this movie, and i'm thinking did we watch the same movie? because this movie was bad. the plot had like 5,000 holes and the characters were amazingly underdeveloped. the whole girl-bonding movie has been done soo many times and this movie just took bits and pieces from every other movie girl-bonding movie ever made! bad bad bad.
Nowhere (1997)
a complete waste of time
since this was the first Greg Araki movie i had seen i expected it to be strange and obscure, but i did not expect it to suck so bad! it was just plain weird! there is absolutely no plot and no character development. nothing is clear. there are aliens, rape, suicide, too much sex and blond valley girls getting annihlated. the fact that araki got such a stellar cast to star in this movie is a mystery to me. Shannen doherty, rose magowan, denise richards, mena suvari, heather graham, ryan philippe, christina applegate and many other pop-culture icons all appear, including a Brady! i was very disapointed because i had heard many wonderful things about him. it just goes to show that teenagers have bad taste in film now-a-days.
Heavenly Creatures (1994)
my most favorite movie
i have a strange fascination for the strange, obscure movies that play in the tiny movie theatre that is located in downtown sacramento. that is where all the best movies are played. movies that make you think, that make your eyes pop out of your head in suprise and horror. i think when this movie came out it probably played there. i had only seen kate winslet in titanic before this movie and hadn't thought that much of her. i saw a small preview for a movie with two girls sitting in a bathtub talking about how they thought they were going crazy. so on a whim i decided to view winslet in her pre-titanic days. this movie is so beautiful and startling and frigtening and alive. melanie lynskey shined as did all the characters. this was peter jackson's first mainstream movie. before he had done Bad Taste, Meet the Feeble, Dead Alive and other lovely oddities. this movie will captivate you. it will alarm you and you will think it is WEIRD and strange and probably not like it. but you are a fan of the obscure like me, you will come to love it and recommend it to everyone you see. it is a treasure.
