Almost Heroes (1998)
One of the greatest comedies of all time
The first time I saw this movie was on Starz!. I didn't even know it came out in the theater because it lasted for about 2 days. After watching it the first time, I thought there were a couple of funny parts, but that was it. After watching it a few more times on Startz!, I started to love it so much that I taped it, and then each time I watched it, it got funnier and funnier. Chris Farley is at his best, and Matthew Perry achieves perfection, along with Director Christopher Guest's longtime friend and underrrated funnyman and actor, Eugene Levy, and the other assorted cast of characters, this is one of the funniest movies ever made. You just have to watch it a few times!
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)
One of the greatest shows of all time
This show is one of the greatest shows of all time. Nearly every episode is amazing. The plethora of ideas that are thought up in this series is just astounding. It has taken science fiction to a new high. Besides this, I'd like to say that Brent Spiner (Data) is an amazing actor. Kudos to the creators, writers, directors, actors, etc. They all deserve a hearty thanks.
Bonkers (1993)
A great show that is alway funny
First, I must say that the Disney Afternoon was the greatest lineup of television shows ever. Originally, when it consisted of Gummi Bears, Ducktales, Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, and Talespin, it was perfect, but alas, new shows were created and old ones were removed. Other greats that followed were Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, Bonkers, Aladdin, and Gargoyles. (Notice I did not mention Timon and Pumbaa, Schnookums & Meat, and Marsupilami because I think they were horrible, which is also why they didn't last as long as the other shows) Anyway, when I have time I'll put my individual comments about each of those shows. This one is for Bonkers.
Bonkers is a bobcat. He started as a famous Hollywood actor in the beginning of the show. The premise is sort of like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, where humans and toons live together, especially in Hollywood. Bonkers' show gets cancelled and through a series of mixups with a policeman named Lucky Picquelle (hope I spelled that right), NOT PICKLE!, they became partners in a new division of the police squad called toon division.
Anyway, that is the plot, but that doesn't explain how hilarious this show is. First, I must say that Jim Cummings, the voice of Bonkers, and a billion other cartoon characters, especially for Disney, is one of the greatest voice artists, on par with Charles Fleischer and Mel Blanc (who provided voices for all of the Warner Brothers cartoon characters). Lucky is an overweight cop who does things by the book and likes silence and order in his life. However, Bonkers, being a cartoon character, and one who literally is "bonkers", makes his life and the entire show turn upside down and insane. Bonkers goes on rants where he's speaking at 100000 miles per second, without catching his breath, constantly moving all over the place, while Lucky is trying to calm himself down before he gets a heart attack. It's hard for me to explain how hilarious and great this show was/is, but you must see it for yourself. It's on Toon Disney every day and night, make sure you watch it with all of the other Toon Disney/old Disney Afternoon shows. See you at my next comment on the other shows.
Saturday Night Live (1975)
A great show that is overall consistently funny
This is one of the most consistently funny television shows ever produced. It it true that some skits are just downright stupid and boring, but others are truly hilarious. There are skits that are stupid but funny, and others that are truly genius and funny. Every year people say, "I liked the old cast, the old episodes were better, the new people suck, etc.", but in reality it depends on which skit you are watching. There are plenty of stupid skits back in the first year with Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd, but there are plenty of funny ones. Every year, people left, and new ones came on, but the show stayed funny over all these years and this is why it is still on television. Personally, I liked the early years, hated the 80's with Dennis Miller, Jon Lovitz, Julia Louis Dreyfuss (Elaine from Seinfeld), early Phil Hartman episodes, etc. Then in the late 80's up to this past year or two, it has been hilarious. Chris Farley, David Spade, Kevin Nealon, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, etc. And the people who followed them are just as funny, with just as many bad and great skits: Will Ferrell (one of the funnies people ever), Ana Gasteyer, Norm MacDonald, Molley Shannon, Chris Kattan, Darrell Hammond, Cheri Oteri, etc. However, this year's cast and skits so far for 2001, are not that good. I like the new Weekend Update with Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon. It's much better than Colin C**p (Quinn) as I like to call him. He is up there with the worst SNLers ever. I can't think of a skit in which he was funny. Even Horatio Sanz, who can't remember a line, always looks off screen, and screws up jokes, still makes me laugh because of how bad he is, but Colin is just horrible. I thought the opening monologue of Mena Suvari (weird name) was hilarious, but the opening skit in the airport was the slowest, dumbest, stupidest skit ever on SNL, even worse than anything I've seen on MAD TV. Well, good luck to you new members of SNL, and to you departing ones, you've kept the show's legacy of great comedy continue.
