Wanted to like it......
30 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The idea was good, the cast wasn't bad but I just didn't like the film all that much. Paycheck is not the greatest film in the world and I imagine Philip K Dick would be turning in his grave at both that film and Next but I quite enjoyed Paycheck. It does exactly what you expect, a cheesy action movie, so thats what I expected of this. Sadly I was wrong. Nicholas cage did his usual which is never a bad thing but he looked quite bored most of the time and Jessica biel is........ pretty. The idea of being able to see 2 minutes in the future had great potential and to be honest the first 15 minutes of the film used it really well and I was prepared for a fun ride. After that though it went downhill with a very generic plot that could be summed up on the back of a postage stamp. The fact that Nicholas cage's character knew what was going to happen seemed to ruin the movie and all tension was lost. (POSSIBLE SPOILER)- Jessica Biels trust in him was also a problem I had with the film. It all happened so quickly and yet dragged at the same time if that makes sense!! Their scenes together were really quite dull and call me old fashioned but did she really need to jump into bed with the guy so quickly!! Sadly unless Jessica starts to improve she will be stuck in her own time-warp playing dull supporting characters who are only required to walk around in towels and low cut tops. Not that I have too much of a problem with that but let's be honest she isn't a very good actress. The ending of the film wasn't a problem for me like it seems to be for others so that didn't disappoint me but the film as a whole did. Add to the ever increasing list of failed attempts to steal an idea from a respected author and create a below average flop!!

Stunning and magical
14 August 2006
I had heard many great things about the iron giant in the last few years but was one of those films I never got round to seeing. I picked up a copy of the special edition DVD expecting an entertaining animated film. What I actually got was not just one of the best animated films I have seen but one of the best films ever. It takes you to another world but never strays from reality and when watching it you forget it's animated. The characters are so well written it puts most live action films to shame. If you pass this off as a kids film you will be missing out on one of the most immersing and emotional experiences you can get from a film. The voice cast are perfect, the animation stunning and the fact this film flopped when released is nothing short of criminal. I urge anyone even with only a passing interest in cinema to watch this film and prepare to be amazed. Brad Bird must be one of the best directors working in animation and after seeing the incredibles the iron giant was no fluke.

A Dirty Shame (2004)

Maybe I just didn't get it.
15 January 2006
Having not seen many John waters films I certainly can't call myself an avid follower of his movies. One thing I can say is that having seen this one I won't be rushing to see any of his other films. A dirty shame tried to be funny and I got the feeling it was trying to make a point on peoples views on sex but I just didn't find it funny. I wasn't particularly offended by anything in the film although I can imagine some people would be. I'm sure there will be many John waters fans who will love this movie and think it's hilarious. I will just remember to avoid ever watching this very trashy unfunny film again. If John waters was aiming to be trashy he got it spot on. If he was intending it to be funny he missed the target completely.

Loved it
29 October 2005
As a British family guy fan I haven't yet had the pleasure of seeing season 4. When I heard of the movie I was extremely excited until I heard it was 3 episodes put together. Ignoring this I bought the DVD on the day of release just to see some new material anyway. I am pleased that I did when I watched it because although they have put 3 episodes together they are from season 4 which hasn't aired here in England. It's a good chance to see what Family guy is like after 3 years off the air. I am pleased to tell you that it hasn't changed and is still one of the funniest and satirical animations of all time. If this is a preview of what the entire season is like then I can't wait. I have a feeling that all the people criticizing it are just expecting too much. I guessed this would happen. A minor miracle occurs and Family guy is brought back from the dead and people still aren't happy. Just enjoy the fact that it's back and for everyone in England this movie is a great chance to see 90 minutes of all new family guy and who would complain about that. Freaking sweet!!!

9 Songs (2004)

Unwatchable
26 October 2005
I rented 9 songs as I was curious to see what the fuss was about. I also enjoy the subject of censorship so was wondering what they were allowing in a relatively mainstream movie. I won't lie to you I was shocked. Not by the explicit sex on show but more by what was allowed to be shown in a non porn movie. Another thing that shocked me was to see Kieron O'Brian a face who isn't completely unfamiliar to British television. What I didn't understand was how the actors and directors seem to justify the use of such explicit scenes. I was hoping to see certain peoples view of it being necessary or being art but I didn't. All I saw was footage of live bands with sex scenes slipped in. It was like watching a live concert with subliminal sex scenes in it. Let me get this straight I have no problems whatsoever with sex in films. It just seemed to me like they were trying to shock and see how far they could go. Which judging from the film was quite a long way. By doing this they seemed to forget the story and the whole film ended up being dull. By the end of the movie I was left wondering who the film was aimed at. The porn fans won't find it explicit enough and the film fans will just find it dull and maybe a step too far. Maybe I just didn't get it and somebody reading this will love the movie. I will continue with the opinion that Kieron O'Brian has done himself no favours with this film and maybe one day he'll regret it. I certainly regret watching it.

Directors cut so much better.
23 January 2005
When I heard about a directors cut to this movie I never imagined it would be so much better than the original release. Why must movie studios always feel they know better than the director. This film would have been much more successful had they left it alone, but by insisting on so many cuts and changes they shot themselves in the foot. All because they wanted a family friendly spider-man type film instead of the much more dark and violent world of daredevil. Every scene added to the film makes you wonder why they cut it in the first place. It isn't just about adding scenes though they have taken a couple out too. I can't imagine anyone who would miss the fireside love scene. I urge everyone who saw the theatrical cut to watch the directors cut. It isn't a perfect film but it's a more complete and enjoyable one. Also watch the documentary on the directors cut DVD and see one of the producers trying to defend the original release and then actually saying he thinks it is the better cut. I think he must be more blind than Matt Murdock!!!

Memento (2000)

Amazing!!!!!
29 January 2002
Warning: Spoilers
POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Wow, Memento is without a doubt my favourite movie of all time. If viewed the right way as you can on the region 2 DVD (or should that be the wrong way) the film is just average. Where this film really becomes special is the way that it is edited. The film is completely backwards starting with a murder and backtracking to show why this person was killed.

For someone who used to be in neighbours Guy Pearce is a great actor and he gives a fantastic performance as Leornard. Not that the other actors aren't excellent too. The film seems confusing for the first 20 minutes or so until you get used to the way it works, but after that you will be completely hooked until the surprising ending. How they managed to film such a complicated movie in just over three weeks is astounding but proves why Christopher Nolan is a director to watch. I urge everyone to see this film and if you have seen it i bet you have watched it more than once.
