Mission: Impossible II (2000)
Please watch carefully
A lot of people wanted to see another kick-ass movie. And they got what they expected. But people who wanted more than that, looked very disappointed. Because: ...It was too cliche.....he survives everything.....the only thing that was different from James Bond was that there was no character who was called James Bond.....etcetera.
But, Everyone!!!!! Watch the way Woo does it! Of course there were cliche's but look at how he exaggerated them. I was sitting in the cinema with a huge smile on my face. Just watch the little things carefully. Look at the little symbolic points, e.g. the white dove that is flying into the room through before Tom Cruise walks in. And later on the dove is sitting next to him on a bar. But more exciting than this, the scene with the motorcycle is unbelievable good. Of course it is an cliche and of course it is inhuman what he does, but Woo knows that too. But the good thing is that Woo let's you see that he knows. Just those scenes and symbolics are making this movie worth to watch. Not only for the kicks, but also for the real good fun.
Vol-au-vent (1996)
Hilarity still exists
I watched this movie at a sunday-afternoon. I really had nothing to do and switched on my tv. What happened in the next one and an half our was unbelievable. From minute to minute I began to shake more and more. The fact of some gangsters falling in a total stressed situation is funny already. But as we now from many movies: that doesn't mean a thing. No, but this movie made me believe in hilarious movies again. It's really one of those movies where you couldn't stop laughing from a scene and another stupid character makes another mistake. All the characters on it's own are giving something to the hilarious sphere of this movie. There's not one character superfluous . Make sure that, if you're going to watch this movie, that you're watching it without breaks. It would bite something of the magic of scene flowing into eachother.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
A good beginning cannot save your movie.
The opening of this thriller/horror movie is, as we are use to from Tarantino, spectacular. The stupidness of Tarantino's character and the smart Clooney make a perfect couple for an exciting movie. But too bad. The movie ends up in a total horror. Suddenly the Tarantino-phrases are nowhere to be found and the vampires are walking through the screen. But for people who are looking for kicks you may well like it. But don't get too excited after half an hour, you will be disappointed.
