Roswell (1999–2002)
X-Files meets Dawson's Creek
18 October 2000
Think of a show which combines the creepy alien conspiracies of the X-Files with the teen melodrama of Dawson's Creek and you get Roswell. This peculiar blend of genres may leave some purists cold, but if you happen to be a fan of both sci-fi and teen dramas, this is the show for you.

What sets this series head and shoulders above other teen dramas is how the sci-fi aspects establish a darker, more ominous mood. Whereas in most teen dramas the underlying conflict of "teen vs. the world" is implicit, in Roswell, this conflict is made explicit by casting the principal teenaged characters as extraterrestrials living incognito on Earth. Their battles aren't merely with parents and teachers who are giving them a hard time, but with FBI agents who seek to expose them and enemy aliens who want to kill them. How's that for conflict?

As well, this show benefits from top notch writing, direction, and photography, no doubt deriving from executive producer Jason Katim's experience on the superb but short-lived series My So-Called Life.

ambitious
4 October 2000
This film has an ambitious agenda. I don't know what it is. But you can feel it.

There are luscious sceneries sometimes because of it bareness alone. The way the characters interact have a certain quality which seems both surreal and too real.

It is a good little film that should not be taken lightly.
