Idiocracy (2006)
Mike Judge is one of the greatest living filmmakers
Why didn't this film get a huge release? This film is brilliant. With this film and Office Space, Mike Judge has proved himself to be one of the most insightful and talented writer-directors currently working. Both of these films are classics. People are talking stupider every year, corporate sponsorship invades society more and more every year, and dumb people do reproduce more than smart people. I loved this movie. A great satire and great entertainment. The film had me cracking up but also shaking my head at how right his observations are about where our society is heading. Judge is the greatest. He should make more films. Office Space is a huge cult classic worldwide and this film will be too.
What Alice Found (2003)
pretty good drama
I just saw this on cable. I liked it. It held my interest and the dramatic choices were good. The old couple were very good and good at being subtly creepy. The cinematography is not so great, but the shabby video also adds to the sense of realism, so its a trade-off, you know? At times the girl would hit the New England accent to hard. The accent would sort of come and go. Anyway, I thought the film was well done overall, though. The storyline was strong and dramatic tension was held because you felt their was some subtle mystery going on, even though things seemed mundane. Good job on a low budget. Another good SUNY Purchase filmmaker. Way to go.
A Hole in the Head (1998)
incredibly weird and fascinating
This documentary is one of the strangest films I have ever seen. Apparently, about 20-30 people worldwide believe that if they cut a hole in their foreheads that it will make them smarter, happier and more energetic. They all follow a guy who lives in Amsterdam who says some of the weirdest stuff I ever heard. Some of these people even used powerdrills on their own heads! I cant believe this film, I love it so much.
Hi-Life (1998)
Very witty with great performances
I came across this movie late one night when insomnia had me flipping the channels at 4am. I thought it was really rather funny. It had a bizarre set-up and then a very tight ensemble cast, and storylines that took the characters in and out of a series of New York City bars. Campbell Scott is very good in the film. And Moira Kelly is a cutie, as always.
