Interesting, entertaining... but a little bit too long.
14 January 2003
Leonardo is excellent as Frank Jr and so are Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken. The plot is great for a true story in the sense that you don't always know what is going to happen next, there are some surprises. It was one of the first time that a beautiful lady played by a famous actress wasn't in the action of the movie. In fact, there is none. Yes, there are many ladies, but they have little screen time and they aren't famous. So, it was a fresh aspect here for a Leonardo movie that I liked. The plot is entertaining because you're asking yourself when he'll get caught. (if you know that he gets caught) The way he fools everyone is also very funny to watch.

The dates were a little bit confusing but it wasn't very important. Sometimes, some scenes are boring and you want to get to the action. At the end, you hope that it end because it's a long movie, but it's worth it.

It is not the best movie that I've seen. Live some people pointed out, it wasn't funny enough to be a comedy, it wasn't dramatic enough to be a drama. It was something unusual that could have been god, but I think that Spielberg didn't spend too much time on this movie. So it gives us a good movie... close to even be very good...

Nothing new in the plot, but good anyway!

Ok, we already seen thousand times the story of a ugly girl becoming a beautiful one. With Sandra Bullock in the movie, it was at least funny. This is the kind of character that she likes to play. She is not afraid of looking ridiculous, unlike many actresses. Benjamin Bratt, Michael Caine and Candrice Bergin are very good in their characters. The love story is inevitably cliché, but it didn't bother me that much.

So for a great acting, a most of the time cliché plot and many funny moments, I give 7 out of 10 to this movie.

A new classic that represents the Quebec nation
11 December 2002
Well... I just saw this movie an hour ago. Not only it touched me, but it's also a total gem. Karine Vanasse, a young actress of 19 years old is astounting as Donalda. With her GREAT acting(probably the best one ever done in a French-Canadian film or even EVER), she simply brings us to tear. She has the power to take your heart and tear it. I'm a guy, it is a huge accomplishment. hehe When I left the teather, I felt like this story happened in front of my eyes. The wonderful job of the crew team gives us a strong impression of reality, which helps to touch us. On the other hand, they make a great job too with including humor to remind us that were watching a movie. They do that exactly when it is so touching that you have no control on your feelings, so it helps to regain control of yourself. Pierre Lebeau did an amazing job as Séraphin, we hate this man to the point that we want him to die, so Alexis and Donalda can live their beautiful love story.

There's no cliché in this movie. Unlike in «Les dangereux», we did not wanted to do exactly like the american movies, we wanted to create a believable 1890 period of time which would represents the French-Canadians.

I give 9.5 out of 10 to this movie because a movie can't be 100% perfect! But, it's close to be perfect! Everyone in the world should see this touching love story that goes directly to our heart. I hope that more people on this website will see this movie because it is a French-Canadian classic!

Bad...
21 September 2002
This movie is really bad!!! We just rent it yesterday and I was pretty disappointed. I thought by the title and the cover that it would be a little scaring and funny but...

Come on, the first 30 minutes are so boring!!!! The actors are the worst that I've ever seen play in a movie. The horror scenes are bad most of the time. I mean, it is a movie that will scare a 8 years old kid, but not adult. It is gore???? Maybe but a cheap gore. You can't relate to any character because of the bad acting and because they all seems odd. You wish that everyone die at the end. The horror scenes could have been great but it was poorly directed.

Did I laugh? Yes. I laugh about the stupidity of the character and because of some great quotes. But it did not help me to like it. I wished that it would end quickly.

My vote? 1/10
