mm-39 is right
16 August 2003
Honestly, I never saw the end of this film, but once a woman gets sassy with Clint and he rapes her to 'learn her' respect I figured out that this movie was made by some disturbing people. No one will do anything about that because they need his help. Without having seen the end, I think I know how it will end. The review above me is perfect, and I recommend listening to it, over even my own.

Oh my sweet lord...

This is the opposite of a kid's movie. Many R rated violent movies are fine for kids, but the story, the tragedy, the horror, and just the characters are too much for children. This is not a movie to watch if you are having a party. This is a fine, fine work by John Woo. The four main characters are excellent, and one is a killing machine. In the end you get more from this than even The Killer (which I feel is a better movie). While The Killer may tug at your heart, this will screw with your mind. This movie must be seen much more than the Matrix when it comes to being unable to explain what's going on. John Woo's opening seems very in character for him, but it might not be perfect for this film. Still, it serves its purpose and the end is truly incredible.

Better than the original!
5 December 2000
This remake of Chinese Connection succeeds in every way that the original did, but somehow manages to make it better. Where there was a solid story there is now a scintillating plot, with much more depth. The fight scenes with Bruce Lee were incredible and Jet Li is only able to be Bruce's equal by having more fight scenes that are more logical. The villainy is less obvious, and the heros less pure. The subtitles are excellent, so turn off the dubbing and use the subtitles for the DVD, although the head enemy sounds like Emperor Palpatine. My name at imdb comes from the protagonist from this movie and Chinese Connection. Also, Chen was voted greatest hero of the Eastern Film Society.

Jet Li versus gangs, police, and American military?
5 December 2000
Jet Li shows that when he takes the role of a Chinese Folk Hero named Wong that everyone else loses. It's not even in question whether he will beat them, but in this intricate and complex story it isn't so simple. Can he save China from its enemies from without and from within? Set in 1850's Jet Li shows why he is the toughest fighter alive. Give the man an umbrella and everyone else is finished. Sometimes odd subtitles, for instance the english lines were not copied verbatim for the subtitles IN ENGLISH. All around a fine film where Jet Li defies most laws of physics.

A different kind of Woo/Yun-Fat/Leung flick
5 December 2000
This film is shorter than it should be to make it a true classic, but its long enough to showcase the acting talents and killing talents of Yun-Fat and Leung. It's a classic tale of betrayal, loyalty, ingratitude, death, love, and guns. If you love Chow's later films this is a must to see where he came from. Further, it'll leave you wondering just how exactly he acts in the sequel, and then in that's sequel...which is in fact a prequel...yeah. And by the way, Leung was in Hard Boiled with the CYF and John Woo.

Don't mess with Chen Zhen
5 December 2000
Bruce Lee's second starring role after Fists of Fury. This movie is also called Fist of Fury. Why do they both have similar names? Because Bruce Lee beats people up with his fists. His feet too, but mostly his fists. Similar rules apply to the baddies in here to those in Fists of Fury: never kill his friends, don't insult him, and don't bring a weapon into play. In this movie we see that bringing weapons into play wind up being used against those who try to escalate the fights. Awesome fight scenes, and an interesting story. The dubbing is humorous at times, but bearable. Also, I highly recommend seeing the remake: Fist of Legend, starring the only man who should be allowed to remake Bruce Lee-Jet Li. Interesting note, Jackie Chan had his first starring role in 1976 in Director Lo Wei's New Fist of Fury, where he played Bruce Lee's "brother".

Don't break his necklace...
5 December 2000
Bruce Lee plays Cheng Chao-an, and he beats up everyone who comes within his 15-ft radius, BUT only after some fool rips off his necklace which symbolized his vow to never fight again. Hsiu Chen also acts as Bruce Lee's brother-like figure who is almost as good, but not quite; same actor reappears in Chinese Connection in similar role. Amazing fights scenes. This Chinese Connection and Enter the Dragon are the only 3 (maybe even Return of the Dragon) Bruce Lee movies worth watching, and this is the second best. Good story in this one, but its overshadowed by the pure tonnage of butt he kicks. A few words of advice for those of advice for those who antagonized Bruce Lee in this movie: don't kill his family, don't kidnap someone he knows, don't hit him, and most importantly, never use a weapon because he'll just use it against you.
