Amores Perros (2000)
7/10
Brutally effective and beautiful
18 December 2002
This film is so brutal and gruesome that it works and is possibly the most real of the year. The cinematography and style of Amores Perros is so much similar to traffic, yet adds a new gritty aspect. Some of the dog fight scenes are so realistic, it's amazing they found a way to film them.

This film certainly takes on a style of its own and tells its own story. The characters are emotional and real and make the necessary links between each other completely believable. Intense and beautiful, Amores Perros is a fast 153 minutes that is sure to be some of the best you spend with a movie this year.

I need rehab from this movie
18 December 2002
Sandra Bullock really took a wrong turn with this movie. This rehab comedy has no direction, depth, or actual comedy! The audience has no one to root for and we don't get to know any of the characters past the fact that they're addicted to booze, pills, or drugs. It starts out flat and stays there the whole way through. Hollywood has once again put out a horrible effort.

8MM (1999)

A beautiful statement that goes nowhere
18 December 2002
I was struck by how poignant this film portrays itself to be. Yes, it's dark, dirty, and disturbing, but underneath all of that there is an incredible statement on our lives. We catch a glimpse of this in a few scenes, but it can never seem to break through. It feels like this film is on the verge of something really great, but ends up dwelling in the disgusting underworld of porn and snuff. This world is so horrible that the light can't find it's way through. No matter how you feel about 8mm, it will make you think and effect you in some way.

It builds to a very intense climax, but continues on only to end flat on it's face. Although not a great film, 8mm may be an important one, and one that should be seen.

Miss Evers' Boys (1997 TV Movie)
6/10
Uninvolving and uninteresting true story
18 December 2002
It's been said about true stories that `you can't make that up'. Unfortunately, you could make this true story up, and in fact, you could probably turn it into a much better movie. However, Alfre Woodard does give an outstanding performance as Miss Evers, and you do begin to feel for the characters and want them to pull through. Even though some of their actions are unexplained and not believable, you find yourself sitting next to Miss Evers as she pleads her case to the court.

Yes, this story never goes anywhere that you don't expect it to. Yes, it begins flat and stays that way all the way to the end. But like it or not, this movie is an important one. It's a movie that deserves to be seen.

Autumn Sonata (1978)
Only Bergman could get away with it!
18 December 2002
You will never see a movie made like Autumn Sonata again. Simply no one makes them these days. And even back then, only Bergman could get away with such a slow dialogue-driven movie. Essentially, this movie has three scenes. They are so long and in-depth, that you get to know this mother and daughter better than most characters in any other movie. They both have flaws, they both are beautiful, and they both want to be free. But they look to the wrong places all throughout the movie.

Autumn Sonata sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of the many other Bergman masterpieces, such as "Wild Strawberries" and "The Seventh Seal". However, this, along with "Scenes from a Marriage", are his most deep and heartfelt films.

A Masterpiece in every sense of the word. One that must be experienced with your whole heart and will have you grabbing your seat as the letter is read at the end of the movie. Liv Ullman is rivaled in this film only by her other performances. And Ingrid Bergman is devastating in her only Ingmar Bergman role.

Revolutionary in its vision
18 December 2002
8 1/2 is considered to be Fellini's masterpiece, and is well deserving of that title. Of all the great Fellini films, 8 1/2 captures his complete vision better than any other. This is a beautiful movie about the pain of movie-making. The dream sequences are incredible and far ahead of their time. This film is one of the reasons Fellini could possibly be the best director of all time.

This is his most personal and heartfelt attempt. The viewer is really able to walk around in his mind during this movie and understand him better. As with many things in life, there are scenes that are terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

8 1/2 is the definitive Italian masterpiece and will always have its place in the list of the greatest films of all time.

Notorious (1946)
9/10
Essential Hitchcock
18 December 2002
Hitchcock and crew never let you down in this espionage thriller. Grant and Bergman are at the top of their game and give some very powerful performances to compliment the direction that Hitchcock gives. Notorious contains some absolutely brilliant scenes which include the "poison" scene and the ending sequence.

This is story about the characters. It's about their love and their courage. Hitchcock doesn't take the time to develop or even explain the whole plot behind the stakeout or the sand in the wine bottles, but that's because it isn't needed. The love story is so passionate, and there are enough thrills to keep you glued to your screen.

Notorious is yet another Hitchcock masterpiece that deserves its place up there with the best of the best.

Great Story - Bad Movie
18 December 2000
Yes, Revelation is a vital story to be told to the world. SO WHY NOT JUST READ REVELATION!! no one knows what will happen and movies like this just cloud peoples minds more. I appreciate the attempt because it does get the idea out there, and I believe everyone should read God's word to decide for themselves what they think will happen. But, looking at this film just as I would any other film, I must say that it's not that great. The special effects were very fake, even just the helicopters flying through the air. It didn't hold my attention and the acting wasn't that great either. Seeing it once wouldn't be bad, just to form your own opinion, but just see it for the story and for a discussion. Don't expect to see a great movie.

Beautiful depiction of our precious life
18 December 2000
This movie is beautifully made. From the extraordinary performances to the subtle beauty of the snow covered mountians, you'll find many things in this movie that just puts a smile on your face. Yet, at the same time, it is a very mournful movie. The entire movie is spent trying to figure out what happened in this school bus accident. I highly recommend it. However, watch it at least 3 times!!!! I have seen it twice and i really want to see it again. I know i will enjoy it more the next time I watch it.

Great First Time - Better Second Time - Incredible Third Time!
15 December 2000
No matter how many times you watch this movie, I promise that it will be better the next time you watch it. That isn't saying that it's not good enough. The first time you watch this movie, you will fall in love with it. But to fully appreciate the amazing performances, breathtaking love story, and the highly intellectual humor you must watch it twice, three times, four times......

The outstanding monologues could have only been pulled off in the way John Cusack does, by him. There is no substitute for his presence in this film. If you weren't satisfied by his performance in Being John Malkovich, well this will confirm that John is one of the most true and original actors around today.

JB is just plain AWESOME!! Hilarious, clever, and an incredible singer!! As soon as he busted out Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On" - I knew that this movie was great!

A great movie of self finding, breakups, and love.

Absolutely Breathtaking and Beautiful
14 December 2000
This film is an outstanding work of art. I have used IMDB for a few months now, but I have never registered as a member. Snow Falling on Cedars made me register as soon as the credits rolled, because I just had to tell you how amazing it was.

The courtroom, the love, the memories, the pain. This movie puts so much out on the table and takes a few big risks, but they all pay off incredibly. It is filmed so beautifully that sometimes you get caught up in the visual explosions that the intense passion passes right by you. Enjoy watching it, but fall in love with the story.

Simply breathtaking, and a film that will never be forgotten.
