Lessons in Chemistry (2023)
Excellent in so many ways.....
Excellent in so many ways is "Lessons in Chemistry". I hope they make a second season, but it seems it was billed as a mini series originally from apple. Fantastic period piece set in the 1950's. Elizabeth Zotts character started rather stiff "due to circumstances" and uptight and softened over time into a lovable woman that you have to root for in this show. Many have complained about a certain episode with the dog being too central a figure, it didn't bother me or my wife at all, it was so well played.... Brilliant writing, brilliant acting, I can only hope it is picked up and expanded on the story for a second season........Watch it you wont be sorry......
The Changeling (1980)
Excellent Film.......
This film is Excellent! They don't tell stories like they use to.....This is Not a Horror film its a supernatural story that is well written. George C Scott was only 53 years old when he made this film and he looks much older. He made the film with his wife Trish VanDevere who was at least 15 years younger than him. Her acting was solid and she is very beautiful...very much downplayed in this film. George C Scott was superb as usual al though he appears to have mileage on him by 1980 which is when this film was made.... He lead a hard life and finally settled down by this time in his career. Outstanding film in so many ways........Cinematography...Story.... See it!
The Last of Us (2023)
It is a Darn Good series..........
It starts out incredibly well, especially the first 2 episodes and falls off after that.....The 3rd episode seems pushed to cater to a "Narrative" that is over pushed these days. That episode almost is pure fill in of that Narrative......Hence I would speculate why there is a plethora of 10 ratings for this series......Picks up steam for the next 4 episodes, once again, seems rushed on the last episode or I would have rated this series a 7 or 8. I had never played the video-game so that was not a consideration for me. The scenes with the infected were very good but not overused as the main theme here, its more of a cause of the sideshow of the apocalypse. The post Apocalyptic world and Cinematography were excellent probably the best part of the show......
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Its Not good.....
This is suppose to be a masterpiece, its not. James Dean is very good, the rest of the film is quirky and strange characters melding together into a not so good film. . Talk about a moody bunch of kids, especially shrieking Natalie Wood in the police station, so annoying. I kept waiting for it to get better and it didn't. The knife scene is fairly lame, with goofy rules no one could control themselves with in real life. Why not just fight with fists a real fight instead of this scratchathon......The parents are all Odd at best. Jims Dad is a goof, his Mom an overbearing control freak. And after the car scene what did Jim "win" the "girl" Natalie Wood in the race, she is clearly going with the other guy and then leaves with the race winner after the tragedy, its all too strange and oddly done. Jim keeps looking for direct answers from his quirky not manly Dad, just oodles of quirky scenes-moments. Ohhhh no someone called you chicken, lets definitely drive cars towards a cliff and that will sort it out......Just bad film almost from beginning to end....
Pereval Dyatlova (2020)
Excellent show! Hollywood take note!
Excellent show! Hollywood take note on how to tell a story. Soviet era thriller with a bit of Supernatural-Horror-UFO to boot. Very well done with the takes from WW2 to 1959. Watch it.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Excellent! Han Solo is by far my favorite Star Wars Character.
Excellent! Han Solo is by far my favorite Star Wars Character. I liked the film a lot, it wasn't perfect like a lot of Purists want it to be, hence the haters gonna hate. But it was a great way to tell Hans story so to speak and it was entertaining. Purists want all of these films to be practically a religious experience for themselves. Its a movie get over it. Highly Entertaining! Watch it!
Knives Out (2019)
Excellent who done it? But.......
Excellent who done it? But.......Loaded with Hollywood politics takes away from a very descent movie. People go to the movies to escape, not be indoctrinated. Good try though.
Ad Astra (2019)
This film is fantastic! 10 of 10
DONT believe the reviews! This film is fantastic too many ADHD reviewers that need non stop action to entertain themselves. A Psychological-Drama in a SCI-Fi setting blows their safe spaces. Its outside the box in a fabulous way.
Copper (2012)
Excellent Period Crime Drama!!
Excellent Period Crime Drama!! What can be said about Copper, by far the best Drama on TV at the moment. Cinematography is so well done makes you feel as if you are watching from the squalid Five Points in the 1860's. Plots are complex and well developed as are the characters. Do yourself a favor and buy this when it comes out on Blu-ray, you wont be sorry. Cochran reminds me of myself if I were a cop in that time, a little dirty perhaps but justice would be served. Politics and Power are well played out as are the scenes and ramifications of the Civil War. This show is not for the faint of heart, it has some of violence and nudity, so it is not for children. I cannot wait for season 2 to start my DVR will be in overdrive.
The Good German (2006)
Truly a Masterpiece! !! Stunning Drama.
The Good German is a complex film that deserves a much higher rating that its being given on this forum. Soderberghs attention to history is so evident throughout this film. Cate Blanchett studied many of the great German actress ,Marlene Dietrich in particular, and it shows in her performance, her mannerisms and body language are spot on. Her character Lena Brandt has survived the devastation of the War, but her soul has been transformed in many ways. What we're following is a once passionate women that in her own personal struggle for survival, forged ties with the dark side ,just to have an existence at all, in a country that's in utter desperation and ruin. George Clooneys performance is commendable and his character is classic film noir. The recreation of postwar Berlin is fabulous and the black and white film does it wonders, as do the 1940's style cameras this film was shot in. There are many plot twists and turns and it makes for a great story. A must see film.
Smokin' Aces (2006)
Had potential, but fell far short!
How the same director of Narc made this film is unreal. Joe Carnahan must have been smokin something when he was directing this film. Smokin Aces has so many flaws its hard to list them all. The film was cast totally wrong, its as though the director let the actors pick who they wanted to be. Ben Afflack is a bad guy who gets killed way too early in the film and Ray Liotta is an FBI agent, thats as backwards as it comes? The story had very promising potential, although not even remotely original. It starts out fairly strong and just slides down the abyss as the story gets worse and worse. Piven gives a good performance as well as Andy Garcia, but the remaining cast just meanders thru one "wish I was cool" take after another with the same result being a truly awful film. Thru the whole film there seems to be very few FBI agents involved until the very end. Don't you think if the case of the century , that is gonna break the mob forever, was in the works , the govenment would provide a ton of manpower to it?? Hotel security guarding the witness of the century, please spare me. Thru practically the whole movie the government knows where Israel is, but has no one at his hotel, they would have agents all over the place as well as State police and local police. I want my 2 hours of my life back , avoid this film like the plague. One of the worst films I have seen in a long time. Pure Hollywood garbage.
Fail Safe (2000)
Numbing Drama-Thriller
--Contains spoilers-- Excellent mind numbing drama-thriller, a must see film for everyone. Superb acting, from a fabulous cast. Fail Safe tugs at your very core and evokes emotions from love to the vary basic instincts of survival and extreme sacrifice in a climax that will not disappoint. There are many many emotional moments in this film ,but near the end ,when the Airforce pilots son is pleading to his own father not to proceed with his mission, a mission that has been en-grained in his soul to complete no matter what the cost is perhaps the most heart wrenching moment I have experienced in film. I watched this with a heavy heart and was so engrossed that I just sat there at the end of the movie numb from its effects, now thats a great movie.
Decision Before Dawn (1951)
Excellent Film
I stumbled onto "Decision before Dawn" on cable the other day and was amazed at how great a film it is. The plot is excellent and it plays out a lot like a modern film even though it is from 1951. The acting is superb and the story is deep. I love the realism in this film , the ruins of Germany were used as the set for the film and weapons and equipment is are authentic WW2 stock. I can not believe this gem is not available on DVD let alone VHS. I found a DVD on the internet that was made from digital cable and was glad to purchase it. "Decision before Dawn" is a great espionage-spy film with the war as a backdrop that is undiscovered by the mainstream film goer (hence the 182 votes on this site). Watch this film and you will not be disappointed. 10 stars of 10.
Hoffa (1992)
Great Film
I thought this was a great film, and I stress the word "film" because so many people are critical of "Hoffa" due to its lack of total historical accuracy. Its a movie based on a historical figure ,not a historical biography. Creative license was used to portray a man that while corrupt, was necessary for the American labor movement at that time. Many people owe Jimmy Hoffa a great deal of gratitude for the advancements he made for the "Working Man". This is often lost today because Jimmy Hoffa ultimately went down, and as we all know Americans love a winner. Danny Devito and Jack Nicholson were great. The DVD is well worth its price and contains some great extras, including some actual footage of Jimmy Hoffa and Robert Kennedy at the hearings in the late 50's. 9 out of 10 .
Revolution (1985)
Epic movie on the American Revolution, 10 of 10
This movie is the most authentic film I have ever seen on this subject. Its use of historical accuracy is unmatched. People, cities and harbors, were dirty, sooty and garbage ridden as depicted in this film. Its use of language is outstanding (Donald Sutherland's english, Al Pacino's fragmented, broken speech) etc,. Anyone interested in history clamors for more movies such as this one with real authenticity, instead of the usual hollywood blockbuster style films that ignore attention to detail.
Lost in Space (1965)
Coming out on DVD in Jan, 2004
I love this show, and it is not on very much anymore. It use to be on the SCI-FI channel. It is coming out on DVD in 2004, Season 1. Amazon is listing. I am pre-ordering it so my soon to be born child will have something family orientated and entertaining to watch.
The Wire (2002)
Excellent Drama
Excellent police drama set on the mean streets of Baltimore, extremely fast paced dialogue, no napping with this show, harsh realities of survival on the streets and the political landscape of Baltimore city government seethe first rate HBO, worth the price for cable.
Eminent Domain (1990)
Excellent cold war era movie with political intrigue!
Excellent cold war era movie with loads of political intrigue, Donald Sutherland is a high ranking member of the Polish Politburo who is to his astonishment exiled from his high ranking position and lifestyle, almost overnight.
The Incident (1967)
awful film, wimps
Pathetic film, all those people and at least 7 men, granted some of them older, and they would not band together and overcome these two 160 lb drunk punks , give me a break! a truly lousy film! 3 women and 2 old men could subdue these wimps. People are not that passive, especially when their wives, girlfriends and children are threatened. At the end only one soldier of 2 with a broken arm takes these guys out, putrid film 1 of 10. In Detroit these dorks would be eaten for lunch.
