X2 (2003)
X-Great...but need more dialogue
19 May 2003
With all said and done, the writers need to crank the dialogue up one notch or a few notches for that matter. X2 is much improve in both action and storyline from X1. Was whole-heartedly disappointed that Lady DeathStrike with such beauty and talent did not say much in her character as an example.

The special effects were breath-taking, and action kept the viewer glued to the screen. There wasn't a dull moment. Great-acting nevertheless!

Just Married (2003)
Interesting date movie minus stereotype
12 January 2003
The actors were enjoying to watch...Murphy and Kutcher both did a great job. Good sparks and chemistry in the air. However, some of the humor and dialogue seemed crude and abit violent for the audience to believe that this young couple were so in love. Soften the violence for one another and you might have a much better movie.

Another thing that really bothered me is the continued stereotyping of Asians in Hollywood. The Asian butler is funny and looked down only in his weird heavy accent and by the way he talks. The Asians were part of the wave of immigration that came to shores of the US along with Irish, and other European immigrants (did you see Gangs of New York?). Yet, these so call writers and producers, can't get through their thick skull that Asians can't speak English normally.

Overall an enjoying light film. Pure guilty pleasure...takes you away from all the real problem with the world.

Entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
It's always enjoying to see a Star Trek movie. The strongest cast for me was Captain Kirk and crew but the Picard gang bore the torch well. A delight to see is the entire Next Generation in another big screen film along with a cameo of Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan.

The movie start out boldly with an array of intrique and nice visuals. However, the audience is not dumb (I hope :-) because one scene was not believable that slightly ruined the film abit for me which is different from being Sci-Fi. Let me explain. <Spoiler> In the scene where, Picard and crew discovers Beta dismantled in parts across the desert they ran into some confrontation with the Desert attackers. There must of been a million gun shots and laser beams shooting at the slow moving Jeep driven by Captain Picard from many attack vehicles and guns and there were no shields, and none had hurt or killed Worf sitting openly in the back. I'll believe in just about anything Sci-Fi from DNA replication, to Data, to invisibility cloak, but let's not take the audience for their common sense.

Back on the course of things, has a heart-felt finale...particularly if you've bonded with any of the characters. I for one did, Data has been one of my favorites and staying true to his character to the end.

Frailty (2001)
Teeth grinding
12 April 2002
Warning: Spoilers
My gosh...this movie was so disturbing it was addictive...I got to hand it to Bill Paxton's directorial debut. To be honest I went into with some hesitation because alot of thrillers are mindless, but this one had me guessing to the very end with only a few compromises. I was still abit pale after the movie though.

<Spoiler> I only questioned the ending when adult Adam says that his brother Fenton was a demon. If the foreshadowing made by Fenton's father earlier in the storyline was indeed true, I just have a hard time believing it because Fenton's character was so moral, just, and "sane". Afterall, young Fenton killed his father because of his morality and justness.

Nothing short on entertaining
12 April 2002
Warning: Spoilers
This was actually quite entertaining. Ben Affleck and Sam Jackson had good chemistry. The movie was suspenseful and actually made us care about the characters.

<Spoiler> Though popcorn entertaining as it was, I had a very slight beef with the morality. I did not find it credible that Affleck's character "Gavin" would ever convict himself by exposing the corruption. Gavin's character is afterall a lawyer.

Fun film but one scene reeked racisism
20 July 2001
I thought that it was a fun film overall and Reese was perky and delightful to watch as she climbed her way to success but there was one scene particularly that reeked with Hollywood racism. Yeh this comedy side-tracked me because as an Asian American I found it offensive that somebody allowed the scene where a woman was trying to speak Vietnamese. It was the way she tried to speak it...almost as if she's mocking the culture/language. This really isn't cool since growing up I had experience racism first hand where strangers would be cruel by making fun of the asian language. If director Robert Luketic or writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirten Smith thought that it was funny, this movie-goer certainly didn't think so. Did anyone forget about "Mickey Blue Eyes" and the ridiculous chinese restaurant scene? Sure...sure...its only a movie but something has to give and Hollywood has to realize that stereotyping Asians is cruel and does not make good comedy and rather help fan the flames of bigotry. Ok...back to your regular schedule programming.

Dragon Inn (1992)
10/10
Tour de force
4 July 2001
This is definitely the DVD to own...(being completely disappointed and disgusted with "Ashes of Time" by Kar-wai Wong), "Dragon Inn" a film credited to Hark Tsui has restored my faith in action/martial arts fantasy films. Stunning cinematography, interesting and engaging storyline, and something that most other movies seem to lack and that is a general depth and interest for the characters. In "Dragon Inn" we actually feel and care about the protagonist and his love, and the third pawn, the beautiful owner of the Dragon Inn.

The sword fighting scene is spectacular. Every movement is "balletic" in the sense of being graceful and streaming. The inclusion of "traditional period-piece music" in the scenes was euphonic. The special effects were dazzling. The cast is indeed talented, how many people out there can actually do both acting and being athletic. The triangular aura between Brigitte, Maggie and Tony ignites a spark all on its own whether its Brigitte and Tony or Maggie and Tony or even Brigitte with Maggie...its almost Freudian. Lots of action films lose their audience because the ending becomes all too predictable. The action in Dragon Inn does not disappoint and doesn't lose any integrity with the audience from the beginning to the finale. Furthermore, the power of the Dragon Inn is that suddenly we realize that we are connected...Wow...

Trashy movie...period.
23 January 2001
This movie is an example of sick and trashy flick but people (who are these people??) obviously think its great. How people managed to find such a dark and no brainer plot wonderful is really beyond me. I was surprised that people like Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow would be involve in such an in-human violent movie. Not entertaining and definitely not making positive influences for entertainment or society for that matter.

Highest Recommendation! One of the Great Film from the 80s
23 January 2001
This movie certainly deserved more accolades than its rated. Frankly, I was teary eyed and it really struck a chord for delivering a quality (rare in movies today) rich storyline. It was cool that a DVD version was out already in the initial introduction of the DVD! Definitely a winner in the 80s and started Kevin Costner's career and gave him credibility. I totally recommend this movie for the whole family!

Annie (1982)
10/10
One of the all time great 80s movies!
23 January 2001
Annie (the one and only original 1982 version)represents for me something special in movie cinema. Growing up with Annie was special. It used to come on HBO every right around the holidays and recently I owned the wide screen version on DVD (I wouldn't dream of that 19 years ago). This movie was such a spectacle...one of the greatest 80s movies that the new generation (to my big surprise) don't appreciate, the great music...the rich storyline...a favorite for everyone that I know and in my big family. To have that glory taken away with such a low rating makes me wonder what people's values are??

Cast Away (2000)
8/10
Bravo!
20 January 2001
CastAway is as strong and deep in storyline as any movie I can remember. Its gripping, happy, sad, and really not long enough. Near to the last scene (not going to spoil it in discussion) should have expanded more...It is really hard to sit through the film and not feel teary eyed. Tom Hanks has really established himself as a phenom. actor. Definitely gonna be one of my DVD must owns.

Artistic...Beautiful and Quite Breathtaking
18 January 2001
Once in a while there comes a film that sets the standards in quality and beauty for films...Ang Lee has combined this with everything else that is quite breathtaking. Rarely does a movie especially in English Subtitles have an American audience appeal but CTHD makes this acception. Can this visual and artistic tour-de-france foreign film possibly be a contender for Best Picture of 2000.
