Boyhood (2014)
Faith in Hoolywood restored?
Recently i've forgone watching American movies - we got principally trashy, worthless movies including super hero films, cheesy comedies or movies which preferred spectacle instead story.
So it's rare to find a treasure like this, but the double of Linklater and Ethan Hawke always has guaranteed the quality - and this work doesn't disappoint us. The unusual way it was shot (during 12 years with the same actors who were playing perfectly) I found amazing and it made the film more authentic. The story goes slowly forward, but it permits of the elaboration of characters and acts. It's really sensible and everyone can find the similarities with his own life. Highly recommend!
Modern Family (2009)
Lovable series with some flaws
I really liked Ed O'Neil's act in Married with children and he was the reason to begin to follow this title - although I knew I had to expect a presumably much different show.
But it's not only about him. The other actors I did not know beforehand, but they play awesome in this well-written, interesting and funny story of three related, but diverse families. The characters (aside from a few things detailed below) are realistic and ordinary, the followers easily can embrace the personality of the woman who has to rear three different children and do everything at home or the teenagers who only want to meet young girls or boys. I feel Lily's character far-fetched: the makers might have done her as a counterpoint of her "parents" who always has a cynical phrase - but these are often not funny, and as a matter of fact she doesn't do anything else, she doesn't have got any cute moments that we would expect from a 4 year old girl. Furthermore, Cameron is too hysterical (even if it's revealing for gays) which me really annoys; and the portrayal of Hailey's stupidity is excessive, unbelievable.
Albite it's a quite funny production, in almost every episode there is a little lesson, a message: you know, accept yourself as you are, don't make your children realize your own dreams etc. Unfortunately many of them are simple commonplaces.
What could be said at last? Despite of these little flaws I'm looking forward to the next episode. Keep up the good work, at least on this quality!
PS.: Ariel Winter, if you read this and feel like chatting me, please send me a message :)
A nagy generáció (1986)
Bittersweet film about coming home, friendships, feelings.
While I was watching this picture, I asked myself more times: why cannot the Hungarian film industry product nowadays similarly brilliant movies? After having seen a lot of new Hungarian movies recently, the watching of A nagy generáció (English translation: The Great Generation) was really pleasurable.
Réb went to the United States about 20 years ago and in the eighties he returns to Budapest with her teenager daughter. He meets people who where many years before important: his old friends, Nyikita and Makai, Mari, the mother of her daughter who is now Nyikita's wife. Everyone thinks he got wealthy in the USA - in fact he doesn't have anything and try to gain some money by Makai's old father, who formerly invented something. Meanwhile Mari is taking a liking for her daughter who would stay gladly with her.
It's a really emotional story of ordinary people and their common problems. We got an interesting imagery of the young adults of the 60s when they are over forty and about the country in the last years of the communistic era. Famous actors were chosen for the roles and they act excellent. I mainly liked Koltay's performance who is mostly known about their comedic roles and directions. To be honest, I dislike the most of those but in this movie he was awesome as Nyikita, the vicious, ugly merchant.
United Passions (2014)
Not as bad as excepted
Before watching the title, I heard the many bad critic. I prepared for the worst: for a boring FIFA-propaganda. Fortunately it's not completely true.
I saw it in a little cinema in East-Hungary in the evening, I was the only one in the house, so no one disturbed me.
The first 45 minutes was pretty good, although it's maybe the lurdiest part of the film: it presents the first years and fights of FIFA, including the organizations of World Cups. After that there is only the justification of Havelange's and mainly Blatter's work: he is the good guy who saved the group and brought the soccer to all part of world. During its presentation i got fed up with the movie.
Despite of the failures and weaknesses it might deserve a better rating than 3 stars. The reason of the low rating is obviously is the hatred what a lot of soccer fans feel toward FIFA, toward this corrupt criminal group. I do not reckon it as a very bad movie, but I like its falling. I only feel sorry for the actors who played well.
By the way, I didn't get answer, why the 2022 WC will be held in Quatar...
Tutajosok (1989)
Lie, lie, lie...
The movie is based on true story and plays in Hungary, 1882. The 14- year-old maid Eszter Solymosi disappeared during a Jewish feast. Some local Jews are accused with the ritual murder of her.
Months later a corpse of a young girl appears in the nearly river, which is found and buried also by raftsmen. The film tells us mainly the story of them: the investigators say that it's not the body of Eszter, and they helped for the Jewish community (for money) to confirm their innocence with the body of an other woman (who smothered and wasn't killed). In addition the defense tries to prove that the raftsmen (and people who witnessed against the Jews) were terrified and even beaten by the investigation department.
The portrayal is not too complex, just as we excepted. This film prefers the side of the defense and the Jews - we can see them as innocent, unhurting people bullied by the envious, anti-Semite investigators. The reason of this is that the movie was significant influenced by the novel of Károly Eötvös (defense attorney), in which he states a lot of lies (inverstigator Bary disproves those later in his own book) and half-truths about Eszter's strange disappearing and the investigation.
However, we could be almost sure that the corpse in the river didn't belong to Eszter. For example, her mother (and other relatives and local Hungarian people who knew the girl) did not identify the body as Eszter's. The medical examiner said that at the time of the finding of the body it had been in the water since 3-4 days, and the age of her had been around 20. We know these facts unfortunately not from this movie, but from the book Bary. Only the disagreement of the mother appears - with a negative tone.
What else could be said? It was made by a book full with sophistications, so it only could be enjoyed by those who don't know the whole story so much or believe in everything which Eötvös claims.
Barátságos arcot kérek (1936)
A usual Hungarian romcom from the thirties
Mátyás Blazsek (S. Z. Sakall) is a photographer who wants to make a sensation - so he thinks out a smart plan. He sends her daughter (Éva Szörényi) on a train to meet the young and famous inventor, Miklós Dénes (Imre Ráday) who is just coming from Paris. Blazsek would like to make a photo about him when he's falling on the platform on a melon rind what he put there before. Dénes slips and on the taken photo he's clinging to the girl. The picture is published on the newspaper with the caption "Miklós Dénes and his bride". At first they remonstrate with the editor upon the caption, but then they fall in love - although he really has a bride.
The cast members were generally known and beloved actors in Hungary at that time, they made a lot of movies (first of all comedies) in the pre- war years and even after-wards. Internationally known is Szőke Szakall (or S.Z. Szakall) who played also in many German films in the 1930s and after his emigration to the USA he made his most famous role: you could see him as Carl, the fat waiter in 'Casablanca'. As for this title, similar romantic comedies were made in those days by the dozen: we can say this is not near outstanding. It's quite funny, but there are also jokes which are far-fetched and dated.
