This movie is mostly about her personal journey through love and fame, not my favorite genre, but it was my wife's time to choose. I did like her music and there does seem to be a good understanding of it here though it wasn't a perfect match with the way I experience it.
The central focus of this movie is the romance between Amy Winehouse and Blake, the love of her life. The role of Blake was key to making this story believable, and it's beautifully rendered by Jack O'Connell who's a new face to me. Marisa Abela is also a newcomer and she's also quite good as Amy. Amy was apparently quite a lusty person and Marisa is all in portraying that.
To me the emotional arc of Amy's story rang true and you would have to credit Sam Taylor-Johnson the director for that. Ordinarily I'd say this is too focused on emotions but this is red meat for women in particular, so I understand. Surprisingly I got into Blake's predicament trying to cope with Amy who also seemed familiar. So this wasn't a miss for me. I admire the way the director tells the story.
I would only caution that you shouldn't expect some deep insight into Amy's persona, she was a unique woman but I'm pretty sure even she was baffled by many of her bad choices. I heard some critics complain that there was no there there, but I think that is true to her actual self and any speculation would have been sheer fantasy.
