Hustlers (2019)
Problematic
Don't know where to start with this one. First off, they aspire to make stripper life look glamorous. I don't buy it. For every stripper you meet who loves their job, there are 5 more that are just trying to make ends meet. The only thing accurately portrayed was the sleazy clientele.
And the premise of the movie: drugging men is supposed to be... funny? If a movie showed women being date-drugged, there would be (rightful) outrage. But because it is men, it's supposed to be funny. Quite sexist, really.
Cinderella (2021)
Not innovative enough
It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. First of all, it tries way too hard to make a point (yes we get it, you're an independent woman). Also, it would have been better if it'd had more original music. Essentially what you're getting is a tired, overdone story with a tired, overdone soundtrack. No originality.
Beautiful Boy (2018)
Sticks with you
This is the movie that made me fall in love with Timothee Chalamet. And a golden performance as always by Steve Carrell. It is a gutting movie, but an important story to be told.
The Undoing (2020)
That ending though....
Ugh, what to say. The series was captivating and could have easily been an 8 or 9, but that ending was just so disappointing! The teased and anticipated twist never happened.
It was still fantastic acting though. Hugh Grant was a hit as always (although it was hard to see him in such a dark role). Nicole Kidman, Noah Jupe... even the lovely attorney hit it out of the park.
An Education (2009)
Decent acting, cringe-worthy plot
I remember finding this disturbing when I first saw it, and now as the parent of a daughter it is downright horrifying. I don't know how we can criticize Epstein's dalliances while at the same time upholding this movie. It just does not hold up well in the "me too" era. I will say that Carey Mulligan is a brilliant young actress, which is why I granted the film 3 stars.
New Girl (2011)
Ages Well
This is one of the few series that gets better with age. The early days of the show were all about who hooked up with who, but later on they all started to form meaningful relationships. And I gotta be honest, by the end of it I was in love with Nick Miller too ;-)
The Outcasts (2017)
Underrated
I thought this movie was underrated. It was a super cute and enjoyable flick. Maybe not the makings of a classic, but still really fun.
Doctor Foster (2015)
Mixed feelings...
Honestly, Gemma's husband is a cow and deserves every consequence for his behavior... but she is no saint either. She broke multiple codes of ethics as a doc, and she handled his betrayal in the worst way possible. Her friends were right to be concerned about her behavior.
Just starting season 2 and, no surprise, Simon is even more of an @$$ than before. He is right that Gemma needs to move on.
Edit: Finished season 2 and they are both garbage human beings. Neither of them deserves their son.
Hamilton (2020)
Just wow.
Yes, I was one of the poor folk who couldn't afford to see it in person... but to see the original cast in #hamilfilm is probably even better!! SO much talent represented here, but what struck me the most was Lin-Manuel's range of expression. What a talented human being.
The Aeronauts (2019)
A decent fictional tale
As a work of fiction, it is an enjoyable movie. It is a bit disappointing that they didn't stick to historical facts. Also, as others commented, the temps at those heights would be MUCH lower.
Unbelievable (2019)
Everyone should see this.
Painful to watch, but an important story that needs to be told. #believewomen
Making It (2018)
Looking forward to season 2!
I started out thinking this show was a waste of Amy and Nick's comedic genius. But it really grew on me! It's a positive and upbeat reality show hosted by a dynamic duo. Can't wait to see what these two do next!
Good Sam (2019)
Warm fuzzies kind of movie
Every now and then Netflix hits one out of the park. A sweet, fresh chick flick! Love the lead actors! Yeah, maybe it's predictable... but would it even be a chick flick if it wasn't? ;-)
The Kissing Booth (2018)
It had potential...
I wasn't sure what to rate this. It had potential... but a few major issues. First, it encourages unrealistic expectations. Is it normal to have a crush on the cute popular boy? Yes. Is that boy likely to date you? No. Sorry. I feel like this premise sets girls up for disappointment (I had the same problem with Sierra Burgess).
Secondly, condoning teen sex. Are a lot of teens having sex? Yes. Are ALL teens having sex? No. Especially not at 15. Showing Elle jumping into bed with the first boy that pays attention to her sends a bad message to teens. You don't have to sleep with someone just because he's more experienced or because you think he expects it. Netflix, you have a platform - show girls that they can respect their bodies!!
(For a more realistic movie w a better message, watch The Edge of Seventeen.)
