Miami Bici (2020)
It's so bad, that becomes actually very good.
Most of reviewers at trashing the movie left and right, because that't how the movie looks like at first sight: bad acting, bad script, unfit characters. Well, it's an aquired taste. Did anyone notice the "Dumb and dumber" concept in this movie? Perhaps most Romanians have not seen the famed movie with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Both characters are similar to Lloyd and Harry of the famed movie, they are both idiots, poor, make bad choices and judgements and act impossible in real life. Spoiler: the Romanians don't do anything like the Dumb and Dumber. They act exactly like two not so smart, very poor and gullible Romanians, trying to get by and get rich in the USA, unprepared to take it to the big world, trusting not so smart thugs that do the same as them, but with a little more experience. The two of them are just the expendables in an endless cycle of gullible idiots used for drug smuggling every few months.
It turns out they catch up quickly and their counterparts are not smarter than them, the Mexican and black thugs being even more idiotic, but with guns. The humor is not quite the universal one, since most of the jokes are made in English translated Romanian that doesn't make much sense for English speakers, but the American characters seem to accept it as east European quirckness. I have seen it three times, because I really like it. In the end, it's a movie, not based on a classical book, and it works out quite good.
Chernobyl (2019)
Passion for historic accuracy
Born in '73 in Romania. The reactor exploded two days after my 13-th birthday and we found out on the 30-st of april by rumors, then on the 2-nd of may we got an official statement from authorities, that will be better to wash thoroughly the fruits and vegetables (it was May, the trees were blossomed, no fruits or vegetables yet), and to stay mostly inside. Imagine kids forced to stay inside when the winter was over and the worm weather just begun. Being used to soviet and communist propaganda, we knew that the truth, when is not comfortable, is glazed in straight lies, and the accident is something serious, never before happened. Luckily Romania was not in the path of the fallout, but the 2000s have shown a lot of fertility issues in women born until 1990. The depiction of the event is accurate to the details of clothing and mentalities. People were living a made up fantasy at the time, that the state takes care of everything and we should not be concerned with things we do not understand. Just as the old city council "politruc" (slang for apparatchik, obedient communist politician) says in the first meeting in the bunker of the power plant. It is also grim to see the actors resembling very well the characters they play, especially Diatlov, Akimov, Brukanov, Fomin, and to good extend Shcherbina and Legasov. Stellan Skarsgard is stellar in his role as Shcherbina, the corrupt apparatchik that realizes the fuckup that will impact the whole world and becomes attached to professor Legasov for his dedication.
The irony of the final words of professor Legasov "what is the cost of lies" is that Kremlin and its propaganda smashes today, in 2019, the series as a lie and exageration, the truth being known only by the chosen ones up there.
Castelul din Carpati (1981)
Verne actually describes another device...
in this novel, or so I understood. It's about the holographic projector, because Stilla is seen as a ghost 3D image moving in the air, with shape and volume visible from all the angles. He was good friends with most of the scientists of the time and had deep insights into science, but his genius relies in what he imagined the technology will go to in the future. At the end of the 19-th century the moving pictures were latest technology, and sound was about to be added, but holography was something to be researched theoretically, being discovered in 1947. He imagined that if moving pictures were something easy to understand and reproduce, the future will make available the three dimensional pictures.
Dacii (1966)
Sergiu Nicolaescu's movies are available on DVD since July 11, 2008
The newspaper "Adevarul" (the Truth) releases on DVD the "Historical" series of movies made by Sergiu Nicolaescu in the '60s, '70s and '80s. This contains the movies "Dacii" (the dacians), "Mircea", "Mihai Viteazul", "Nemuritorii" (the Imortals), "Capcana mercenarilor" (the mercenaries' trap), "Pentru patrie" (for the country). They are restored from film rolls from the National Film Archive (or national television archive), but quality is limited to VHS resolution. Given the film and audio technology level in 1967 the soundtrack is mono with subtitles in English and french. Colors are restored, but some scratches are visible throughout the movie, given its 41 years of age. Visual or audio effects were no concern for Nicolaescu, since its movies are based on historical facts transcending time and people. Fight scenes are real, using 5000 plus extras synchronized and filmed with multiple cameras, since no more than two takes were possible in one day at that scale. I don't know if the movies will be available outside the country, since are distributed only with the paper. http://www.filmeleadevarul.ro/istorice/category/filme/dacii/
Arabela (1980)
The best TV series of my childhood
I have nostalgic memories about this series. The best kids TV series of the '80s for communist countries. It was broadcast on Sunday in my country Romania, at 11.00am, and the whole day I was dreaming the episode. It had the power to transport the kids for 30 minutes to a world of magic and hope, in a time of darkness, lack of food and electricity. All the kids were talking the next day at school about the magic adventures they witnessed. It was the 30 minutes drop of heaven. Has been aired several times, because there was nothing against the communist party's doctrina and propaganda in this series. I remember it had a sequel, it was done with the same cast and it worked, kids loved this too. I would like to have this show on DVD for my kids, but I can't find it anywhere. If it has not been restored in digital format probably is already reddish in color like all the TV footage from the '80s.
