Warrior (2011)
One of the most over rated films I've ever seen
Missed opportunity to make an excellent film. Cliched story, good fight sequences ruined by tried and untrue shaky camera technique, and a forgettable ending. Major plot points are totally unrealistic.
Lifted (2010)
Obviously the writers know nothing about the military, if you've deployed, you might want to skip this
I saw this movie years ago and didn't think to write a review. However, I came across it once again while trying to watch something on a lazy day.
I would have liked this a lot more if they had just done some research or talked to a vet. The inconsistencies killed it for me.
The plot centers around a small family in a small town somewhere (I think ) in the south. Young mom is a former addict, dad is a mechanic at the local garage and a Marine reservist, they have a young son. The dad and boy do a thing where they rap or sing or something like that.
The dad eventually gets called to deploy. This is where the problems start. Apparently, everyone associated with this movie believes that when a Marine gets deployed, he/she doesn't get payed. The writer hasn't heard of BAQ, VHA, or basic pay during wartime (which incidentally doesn't get taxed). Oh, and let's not forget danger pay. The reason I mention these is because it becomes relevant in the later part of the movie. I'll explain: once the dad is deployed, we begin seeing the little family have a hard time, they have no money for the mortgage, food, etc. She loses the house has to move back into the trailer park with her abusive father and ends up back on drugs. This entire plot line killed the movie for me! What was the dad doing? Going to the goat club and making it rain in Afghanistan? Just a ridiculous premise, entirely. This is the meat and potatoes of the entire movie!
The ending comes in a M. Knight Shyamalan type twist, so I won't reveal it. Just see it for yourself. This could have been an ok movie but the plot-holes just killed it for me.
Fo Shan Zan xian sheng (1978)
Awesome fight movie...
This is an excellent kung fu movie.
I saw this movie for the first time back around 1980. I originally went to see Jackie Chan's "Big Brawl" or "Battle Creek Brawl". I remember that as a young boy growing up in Mexico, I used to devour martial arts magazines from the US. This is how I was exposed to such classics as "The Young Master", "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" and other Jackie Chan films. I originally went to see Jackie Chan, expecting the other movie to be a poorly dubbed, poorly choreographed, and horribly acted chop socky. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised from the get go. The choreography is excellent. The fight scenes are long and the shots are long with few to no closeups or cuts. We actually see the skill of the fighters. There is a training sequence where the main character uses the Wing Chun "Dummy" it training when he believes that everyone is asleep. There are also awesome fight scenes including fights against multiple attackers which are excellently choreographed.
I rate it an 8 only because the dubbing is pretty terrible, but if you like excellent fight choreography, as well as a legitimately outstanding martial arts movie from the seventies, you won't mind the poor dubbing.
