I loved the dog!
11 August 2019
I didn't care for the main characters, except the dog. He/she's a great actor. I was surprised with this movie today during a sneak preview, we discussed leaving but my companion wanted to see if there would be at last something rewarding after sitting through that. Of course, I won't give any major spoilers. For me the dialog and main formula of the movie was tedious and cheesy. I don't understand why these films are repeatedly still being made, but it has an audience. I guess I hope for better luck next time with the sneak preview.

A cliché with beautiful scenery and moments
9 September 2016
This movie was recommended to me, and while I found it entertaining enough to watch, I could also predict the whole plot as it was unfolding. And I hate being able to do that. What kept me watching is that I enjoyed listening to the Swedish and see the countryside. While it carries a sentimental message, that it is never too late to change or to learn, that one should believe in oneself...that life is what you make it etc etc...it is right up there in the genre of Sister Act and similar. One element I liked was the discussion of bystander effect, and if one carries part of the responsibility of what happens to other people. I liked that there was a mix of characters from young to old, handicapped etc... but...they all remained a bit shallow, like their backstories were rushed and it was very black and white. I would not put the movie on a pedestal, I felt it was okay...but not great. It would not make it in my personal list of the top 20 best movies I have ever seen.

Hysterically funny
30 October 2011
I saw this film this night at the Leiden Film Festival where it was the final film. I think what makes it funny is that it is a subject we can all relate to (* even the men) although it something one rarely discusses in public. The majority of the crowd were all women, but there were some men as well. The organizers also held a lottery, handing out numbers---the prizes where vibrators generally donated by a sexshop. Surprisingly, a lot of men won a vibrators, perhaps they need it even more;)....(you probably get it if you see the film).

I also really enjoyed the beautiful set and costumes, it made it very convincing and the acting was great. You can see all the actors had as much fun acting in this movie, as we had watching it.

I want to own this film on DVD:)

Fairly loyal to the book
16 November 2010
I just got home from watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I will try not to give any spoilers, but I thought it was one of the best movies yet. I thought moreover that it was fairly loyal to the book for once, as far as it was possible. I thought the tension build up was very good throughout the movie, I liked seeing the characters being slightly more matured. There are some new kind of 'special effects' in the movie, which was kind of weird to me at first, but I guess it fitted the story. I can't wait to see part two , even though I know what will happen.

I will not tell you anymore, but it is definitely worthy to see it in the cinema:)

Leaves you wanting more
28 January 2010
I went to see this movie this afternoon(in an almost empty theater).

I do not know if it helped to get sucked into the story, but for as long as the movie lasted, it felt like I was there. The 3d experience is very cool, funny at times(!), breathtaking in others. The world is beautiful, poetic... The amount of detail put into the environment of the world, the behavior, customs and appearance of the Na'vi and other creatures makes it very convincing. From the moment the movie started it is a pleasure to the eye. (And not only because it is 3D).

Some say the storyline isn't original. Perhaps some aspects aren't (the base line) but it doesn't differ that much from formula's used in other SF/Fantasy movies(such as Lord of the Rings or Starwars) and it did not bother me. There are original things to this movie. The creatures thought up, the 'role' they play in the movie, the 'cosmology' of the Na'vi...yes, in a way the world seems familiar, and yet surprising. There 's a duality to it, it is beautiful yet very hostile. I loved the flowers and trees. I want to believe there is a planet Pandora out there.

Then of course there is the interesting concept of entering a different body(would it be EASY to do, even when you're crippled?). To give you an identity, create a new. What about 'mind control?' I don't want to give away any spoilers, but pay attention to the movie, perhaps you know what I mean. Perhaps there are some 'deeper'concepts to discover. I sometimes forgot the main character wasn't 'the significant other', finding the role more suiting to him(probably the point).

Now why I didn't give it a 10 out of a 10; I thought the black and white(we're the good guys vs were are so evil, we don't care)a bit laid on thick; perhaps that part isn't entirely convincing to reality. Also, how can the significant other keep alive when 'his'spirit is back in his old self?

Perhaps this isn't a movie that asks a lot of 'thinking'. I am usually someone that is hard to please with movies concerned...and yet I found this very enjoyable.

I'm sure there are some aspects in it that will appeal to anyone. In the end I was thinking 'I want to tap back in there'.

I'm sure in 10 years from now, we'll only have 3d in theaters, but for now, on this scale it is a novelty.
