Prisoners (2013)
10/10
An suspenseful thriller mixed with some of the most amazing acting in cinema.
17 December 2022
Prisoners is a very tension filled 2 hour and 33 minute nightmare, and not a single second was wasted. With incredible performances from Hugh Jackman, Paul Dano, Melissa Leo, and Viola Davis, every single actor and actress did their part in this film. The acting was truly phenomenal and it truly got under my skin.

The movie is very dark tonally, possibly due to the gritty and realistic color grading and cinematography and the violence can get kind of disturbing. This is easily not a film for the faint of heart or parents. It's a very tough watch thanks to the astounding direction by Denis Villeneuve, who always keeps you guessing until the very end. The score is very anxiety-inducing, which definitely sets the tone for the scenes that use it, but I was honestly surprised this wasn't a score heavy film. The majority of the violent scenes were silent, which made them hit so much harder.

Prisoners is definitely not a film for everyone, but if you want to see some freaking ACTING, then this film is most definitely a must-watch. The 2 and a half hours practically fly by because this movie knows you desperately want to know if the children even make it out alive. Hugh Jackman's performance is probably worth watching it alone.

Smile (V) (2022)
10/10
The scariest psychological horror film I have seen in years
20 October 2022
Going into Smile was relatively easy, as I am pretty difficult to scare. However, I had taken some Delta 8 gummies prior to me entering the theater, which, due to me being autistic, made my heightened senses even higher. I truly believe that the gummies made me think this is the scariest movie I have ever seen. The sound design is very creative, so seeing this in theaters is a must, but the smiling in the movie is extremely creepy. The acting in this film is definitely a huge highlight. I didn't expect the acting to be anywhere near the caliber it was, since most horror films I have seen in recent times didn't really focus on acting. But Sosie Bacon was amazing in her role as Dr. Rose Cotter, and I don't think anybody could've pulled off that role in a way that would match her performance. As Rose slowly loses her mind to this curse, you feel as if you're dragged along with her. Despite the almost 2 hour runtime, the movie genuinely feels like an anxiety/panic attack that gets worse as the movie progressed. The score is also amazing. This year has blessed us when it comes to musical score in cinema, and Smile is another film I can add to my "Amazing Movie Scores" list. Mix that with the intricate sound design, and you pretty much have your standard horror film, but this one is genuinely terrifying and had me cowering in my seat like a freaking baby. Sitting in the third row of seats almost right in front of the screen definitely did not help. While I will most likely be seeing the film again due to me having the reaction I did, I will definitely find out if this movie is genuinely scary or if I was just tripping. Either way, Smile was fantastic and messed with my head a little. It's definitely worth seeing in theaters.

Blonde (2022)
10/10
An Outstanding Performance from Ana de Armas
3 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I actually didn't expect this film to be so hated, but then again, most people today wouldn't know a good movie even if it slapped them in the face. It's movies that get reviews like these that scares movie companies from releasing good films, and it's because of that we get sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes that people don't need.

Ana de Armas was an incredible Marilyn Monroe in this film. She did such an outstanding job and really put all of her heart and soul into this role. The supporting cast such as Adrian Brody, Julianne Nicholson, and Bobby Cannavale also did an amazing job in this film. The cinematography and execution of the story was absolutely magnificent, and with a score that definitely matches the tone for every scene that includes it makes for one of the best films I have ever seen this year. Despite the very long 2 hour and 47 minute runtime, the movie moved at a very slow but rewarding pace. It's because of that runtime that the story feels fleshed out and allows the tragic portrait of Marilyn Monroe to really shine. Due to Ana de Armas's magnificent portrayal, you end up feeling for the character, and the way the movie shows her emotions and all of the traumatizing moments she goes through really has a lasting effect on you. This was a perfect runtime in my opinion. Nothing in this film felt rushed. Everything was brilliantly executed.

In the end, I actually don't really have a complaint for this movie. The last thirty minutes or so really got dark, which I wasn't expecting. Even though I expected a scene where Marilyn overdoses on barbiturates, the way it was done was definitely a bit disturbing, even more so since they shot the scene in the exact same room where the real Marilyn's body was found. Now, for those of you who are giving bad reviews for the movie not being accurate enough to Marilyn Monroe's real life, there is some accuracy to her life. This movie is based on a book that was a fictionalized tale of the life of Marilyn Monroe. It's fiction! Don't people know how to read? I'll be damned if the acting or this movie itself isn't noticed by the Academy Awards. This was an incredible movie and I do hope people realize what this movie was trying to do soon. I absolutely loved this movie.

Fall (I) (2022)
7/10
Thrilling and riveting, but rehashes what I've seen before.
24 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing the previews that stated this film came from the producers of 2017's 47 Meters Down, I kind of knew what to expect when I walked into the theater. It does not disappoint. If anything, the trailer only gave me a glimpse of what I was about to go through. I'm not a fan of heights, even though they don't scare me as much as they used to, so watching this film was like a nightmare. In a good way of course.

Grace Caroline Currey (Becky) had an amazing performance. After losing her husband, she portrays the grief her character goes through really well, and although the film mentions it and even shows it briefly, I wish more time was spent on that. As for the movie itself, it moved at a brisk pace despite the 1 hour and 47 minute runtime. While the two girls are stuck at the top of the tower, the film explores an internal conflict between them, which provided tension between the characters, which I quite liked. It had a decent score, and some great cinematography, which I wasn't expecting. However, what I did not like about this film was that it re-uses the same plot twist as 47 Meters Down, just used in a different way. However, while the twist in 47 Meters Down was clever, Fall's twist doesn't make sense at all, and it had a tough time leading me to believe the film's events after that.

All in all, Fall is a pretty decent movie. While I think it was miles better than 47 Meters Down pacing wise, I don't think a plot twist was needed for this film. People who have seen the aforementioned film will notice the lazy plot twist and will think it's a waste, and I wholeheartedly agree. However, this movie left me breathless and had me on the edge of my seat with its suspense. It kept me guessing at least until the plot twist. That's when I started predicting the events of the film. It's not bad. Should definitely be seen in theaters.

They/Them (2022)
5/10
Interesting concept, flawed execution.
6 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'll admit, I didn't go into the film expecting an award winning masterpiece, but when a director with the biggest pair of balls introduces a topic with really shaky ground, you really have to give him credit. However, there are a few faults I have with it.

First of all, I'm not at all against the premise of the film. In fact, the plot is the reason why I gave it a shot. A group of LGBTQIA+ teens sent to conversion therapy camp while a killer is on the loose is stunningly original. Kevin Bacon was great as always and played his part amazingly. The characters had some depth to them and made it feel real. The circle trust scene was very well written, and all of the acting was great. Despite what many people have said, I quite enjoyed that musical number from the characters. It made them feel real and easier to connect with.

Now, let's talk about the bad. While the first half started off consistently, the second half of the film started losing its focus. It was like writer/director John Logan had no idea where to go with these characters after building them up. Also, it's really slow for a horror slasher. Yes, one person is killed off about 30 minutes in, but the real action doesn't start until 1 hour and 10 minutes into the movie. If you're going to try to make a movie with that slow of a pacing, there needs to be internal conflicts and psychological horror. But what does the movie do? Have Kevin Bacon make one of the teens shoot a dog. By the time the climax comes, you're already bored out of your mind, and that "twist" is so predictable and cheap. There's no real scares or substance to the film, since the vast majority of its main characters have plot armor.

In the end, They/Them had an amazing premise, but falls short after the first 40 minutes of the movie. It's agonizingly slow, and it's after that the movie kind of just drops everything. There wasn't anything to keep me interested in the film. I get what the movie was trying to do, and for the most part, it does it pretty well. But for a movie marketed as a slasher, it's very disappointing. Most of the damn kills are off-screen! I really don't recommend wasting your time with this movie.

A decent adaptation in a time where most remakes flopped
1 June 2020
Look, I hate remakes as much as the next guy, but I was pleasantly surprised with 2010's The Karate Kid. Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan had great on-screen chemistry together, and the acting was good. The movie was entertaining, and of course, Jackie Chan was one of the highlights of the film.

The fight scenes were entertaining, but my problem is the camera shakes a lot during the fights, making some of the movements very hard to see. I understand shaky camera movements exists to make scenes more intense, but it's not worth watching if I can hardly tell what I'm seeing.

Remakes have a reputation for being terrible, but The Karate Kid manages to do a decent job at being a remake, and it's a fun movie for kids and adults to enjoy. I don't really recommend more remakes, because the originals should not be touched. But should a remake happen to exist, the director should take notes on The Karate Kid.

Entertaining, but doesn't stick to the source material
1 June 2020
The Percy Jackson books were some of my favorite books growing up, and when a movie came out, I couldn't wait to see it. However, the film stays as far away from the source material as possible, which makes me wonder why the heck this movie was made.

There were certain things the movie just couldn't get right that I didn't think need changing. For example, in the book, Annabeth is blonde, Percy is 12, and when the car crash happens in the beginning, Grover was supposed to be unconscious. While it was true that Luke is evil, Percy doesn't fight him at the end. He fights Ares, the god of war.

The acting is decent, and Logan Lerman is a decent Percy Jackson. The special effects are cool, and the fights are really entertaining. The comedic elements are there, and the chemistry between the three actors are likeable.

In the end, it's just a popcorn flick for the family. It may not be the best movie ever made, but it's decent enough to enjoy. I just wish the movie stuck closer to the source material.

After (I) (2019)
4/10
Ugh.
1 June 2020
Romance is not my thing at all. I find most of them to be pretty terrible. Like movies based on anime, romance movies are a miss for me.

This film has been classified as a PG-13 Fifty Shades of Grey without the sadistic kinky stuff. Whoever said that was right on the money, and now I can say the movies have another thing in common. They both suck.

This movie is basically like that one line in The Fault in Our Stars. "Gorgeous pixie-haired girl dislikes authority yet can't help but fall for a boy she knows is trouble." The chemistry between the two lovers felt forced, and tried to make a reasonable break-up at the end, you know, like every romance movie?

This movie misses the mark badly, and makes me question the future of romance films, which I wish people would stop making. It's just bad.

Fifty Shades of Messed Up
1 June 2020
Oh boy, where do I even begin with this one? This film is most likely for women who want to be dominated, I get that. But the film's cringe-worthy sex scenes, awful dialogue and lazy writing makes this movie almost unwatchable.

The movie was going for a sadistic romance about BDSM, but is executed poorly and makes me wonder what kind of drugs would have to be taken to enjoy this movie. My girlfriend enjoys this movie, but the difference between her and I is that I have taste when it comes to films.

Romance certainly isn't my style when it comes to filmmaking, but this inexcusable piece of crap was just bad. How they managed to make THREE of these just surprises me. It's truly awful. You can't make me watch this again even if you paid me.

Haunting
1 June 2020
Sam Mendes brings a war movie about two men sent on a mission to stop an attack. I have always been interested in seeing this, since I haven't seen too many films based on World War I, but I didn't see this movie in theaters until I saw it nominated for a hell of a lot of Oscars. I have seen my fair share of war films, and these kind of films deliver a brutal punch and shocks you with its graphic violence. I went into this film knowing almost nothing, but prepared.

I was actually surprised and a bit relieved this movie didn't focus on graphic violence to give you a brutal punch. This film delivers that punch in such an emotional and haunting way. The score and the performances in this film is excellent, and the realism in this movie shocked me.

It took me months to go see this movie, but at least I can finally say I'm glad I did.

The Irishman (2019)

Brilliant Performances, but Drags On.
1 June 2020
Martin Scorsese's films are movies I like to believe are always good. He truly knows how to make a classic gangster film, and make it entertaining at the same time. Running at three and a half hours, it becomes hard to keep the audience engaged for that long, and for some reason, this movie has a hard time doing that.

Robert de Nero does a great job as always, and Al Pacino brings a great performance. The story was interesting, with a great supporting cast. The score was decent, and as for the acting, it was great! So why was I disappointed?

In the end, the movie drags on for too long in some moments, and can sometimes get boring. How me and my girlfriend managed to finish it, we will never know. I was excited to watch this movie, and even though it was good, it is not Martin Scorsese's best.

Joker (I) (2019)
10/10
A Cinematic Masterpiece
1 June 2020
Todd Phillips created a solo Joker film and made it rated R. When I first saw the trailer, I actually hated it. I was expecting brutal violence and I wanted to see the Joker go full crazy. I changed my mind when I heard the reviews and I went to the theater the next day.

I came out amazed. Joaquin Phoenix shatters this role effortlessly, and his performance was some of the best I have seen in years. Robert de Nero, a great actor too, does his part as Murray Franklin and is actually pretty likable. The score is haunting, mesmerizing, and kind of beautiful. This is the first movie that actually made me give a damn about the score in a film.

This film needed to be made, and people out there need to see it. It is truly a cinematic masterpiece, and I'm not afraid to admit I have seen the movie twice in theaters, and even more at home. I truly enjoy this film and I truly recommend it.

The movie is okay, at best
21 May 2019
A lot of people hated this movie, and it's not hard to see why. The acting is very lackluster. Noah Ringer's performance as Aang lacked the energy and happiness that is seen in the show, Sokka lacked his comedic lines, and Kitara? Whoever played her was freaking horrific. Every time she talked, it sounded like she was reading her lines instead of really acting. Speaking of the names, they are butchered. Is it that hard to get their names right? The use of slow motion is overused, but I still enjoyed it. Some parts looked really cool to me. The movie is guilty pleasure to me. I watched it the other day on Amazon Prime, and I enjoyed it. The fight scenes were entertaining and the score was POWERFUL. The special effects look really nice, (except the airbending scenes. It just looks like it was added on at the last minute). The thing about this movie is that it stuck to the source material some of the time, which is sadly, a lot more than the Percy Jackson movies and Dragonball Evolution. I felt that it was rushed. It tried to fit too much into an hour and a half, and some really important things were missing. But then again, I found this movie fairly enjoyable despite its horrible flaws. I don't know, I guess I just find enjoyment in bad movies.

Guilty Pleasure
21 May 2019
Dragonball Evolution was a movie I hated when I went to go see it in theaters, but I was 8 years old when I watched it. I just recently saw the movie and my opinions about the movie somewhat changed. The fight scenes are silly some of the time, yet entertaining. The acting is tolerable and the special effects are okay. James Wan gave us a HORRIBLE adaptation to the manga, if not the anime. I felt that if someone who actually watched the damn anime or bothered to do the movie justice at all would direct this movie a whole lot better. However, this movie holds a place in my heart like The Last Airbender did, and I'll always enjoy it.
