True Detective (2014)
Best since season one but flawed deeply flawed finale
Clearly season one is modern classic but the follow two series were frustratingly weak, this series is a partial return to form. When having a lovecraftian supernatural focus the series was riveting but the attempts to shoehorn in a politically correct zeitgeist into the final episode really fell flat. Main characters were good and the related family drama provided a good plot line. The finale was a sloppy and incoherent attempt to tie up all the loose ends. Both the main characters were irritatingly self absorbed but were tolerable in terms of the over plot but the ending was really poor, worse than a bad wank.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Tired sequel, think the Exorcist on valium
Nice to see a horror movie with main stream high end acting and production values but the story is soporific and the scares are minimal. A miss.
Connect (2019)
Beautiful and moving indie film
Full disclaimer, I have no connection at all to this production, and this is my first review for IMDB. Believable characters and a sensitive portrayal of a very real issue that avoids falling into an overly polemical approach. Lovely setting and a great debut. I shed a few tears watching this, one minor character references "Its a wonderful Life" and you can see some retractions of that film's theme, that we are or should be connected to those around us.
