Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Great casting but that's about it
Tomb Raider could have been an awful movie. Poor plot, poor effects, poor supporting cast....the producers' claims that this would be the new Indiana Jones is, quite frankly, laughable. But if one thing saves it from the depths of forget-ye-we-shall is a certain master stroke in the casting of the film's leading lady. For Angelina Jolie is not just playing Lara Croft. She IS Lara Croft. Jolie is one of the few actresses of today who can merge talent with incredible sexiness, and both are highly evident in this film. No-one else could have handled this part of an ass-kicking aristocrat so well. Unfortunately, since the film, Jolie has had a run of poor films, which is a great shame as Tomb Raider should have made her a movie star. Now there are rumours that Kelly Brook will take over the role of the cyberlady in the sequel. Please, don't.
Enemy at the Gates (2001)
Enema at the Gates
Hmmmm. Character-based War film. Cool snipers. Jude Law. Rachel Weisz. Good film, you'd think, right? Because I did. Boy was I disappointed.
I have never seen such a boring war film. I think Law is a brilliant actor, but he was terrible in this film, as was most of the cast. The accents were posh British and really stupid - I would not have minded a less obvious accent, even if it wasn't Russian. Characters' actions were completely unjustified and the dialogue was awful. And the ending in no way justified the tension between the 2 snipers.
No, EATG is a bad BAD film, badly written, badly directed, and badly acted. Must do better next time, Jude.
Yo hice a Roque III (1980)
Spanish farce romp as it's diabolical best.
A typical example of late 70s/early 80s Spanish farce, Roque III borders on the edge of what we would perhaps call porn. Boobs and even genitalia are the order of the day as 'comedy experts' Andres Pajares and the Spanish Hugh Grant Antonio Ozores exploit the former's fame as boxer Roque III. There's not much to this film to differentiate it from the literally hundreds of other farcical romp made in that era, but they certainly don't come more farcical and rompish than this. It's not art, hey it's not even good, but if it's an entertaining time you're after especially after a few drinks with the lads, then watch this film and laugh at how bad it is.
