Full of incongruities
1 January 2011
How can a director put so much effort and money in a movie while overlooking so many factual mistakes?! There are at least a dozen of them. Reminds me of the worst Hollywood movies where good guys shoot dozens of bad guys without being hit once (it happens once in this movie and the rest is as surreal as that). I like the actors individually, I've seen them in many movies, but this one is just not made for them: they all play their role badly. They are as much unfit for the movie as the scenario is riddled with incongruities. Next time, please Mr. Director, take some more time and make the movie accurate and believable.

Superbe!
24 October 2009
This cartoon is a jewel, thanks to the drawings and a story full of creativity! The Lascars spend their summer holiday in the suburbs of Paris, in a ghetto made of concrete where selling pot is one of the best jobs you can get. You need to speak very well French to understand the dialogs, or be used to the "verlan" where syllables are reversed. The movie is damned funny, once again thanks to the drawings and the dialogs. Situations are so realistic and yet so absurd, that they are bound to trigger laughter. The movie is based on the success of 1-minute shorts that could be seen on French TV Canal Plus (you can find them on the net, that will give you an idea). The movie manages to go beyond by creating a long story that makes the characters touching. I hope we will be able to enjoy soon Les Lascars 2.

Genius!
31 January 2009
History of a genius by a genius writer. Our hero switches, beyond his will, from our world to another dimension, where he is hailed as the messiah. How will this average man build a new personality to take on the challenge? A genius is the one who comes back from another world to speak to us. With this script, the director has managed to become one. And what a joy to see Benoit Poolvorde demonstrates once again how great an actor he is. There is in Benoit, and in this movie, flamboyance, humor, creativity, emotion, realism and everything needed to end up with a perfect story. But beware: to understand the movie and experience its greatness, you have to become the hero yourself. Only once you fully accept it could happen to you, will everything come to light.

Genius work!
29 April 2006
I may not spend much time reviewing other movies but this one is worth writing a few words. It is one of the few movies in a decade that you can call genius work. The plot, the filming, the actors, the rhythm, the music, the melting of tenderness and bluntness all make justice to the words crazy, beauty and art.

In some way, it reminds me of the sheer creativity of Amelie (Poulain). It is art, for the only pleasure of conveying beauty and emotions. And as much as Amelie should be seen in French, I can only recommend to see this movie in the original Gypsy language to fully enjoy the magic of this beautiful world, so strange and yet so real.
