The Tomorrow War (2021)
Despite the criticism, the logic is well traced.
Concept: in the present, people are selected to be sent to the portal, who by the time of the future war will be either dead or too old, i.e. Turn into a burden. Therefore, it does not diminish the potential of the present; on the contrary, it even clears the demographics and lowers the average age. At the same time, you need to accumulate valuable resources and heavy weapons, so sending them is impractical.
However, sending people out of the present does not affect events prior to their arrival, which means they travel through a multi-universe (as in «Rick and Morty», not in the «Back to the Future» movies) rather than a timeline. Therefore, even if you kill the family of the protagonist in the present, it will not change the future from the portal in any way.
In other words, the future in its own universe is doomed to live out its destiny. The present will manage new information and build its own version of the future. If you build another "time machine", it will open a portal to the next point in the multi-universe.
Of course, I may be wrong, the problem with the film marketers, they seemed to be deliberately trying to confuse the viewer. Or they didn't understand what they were advertising.
Without Remorse (2021)
looks stupid, but entertaining
I can't evaluate the ideological component from the point of view of the US, just as I can't evaluate the film adaptation of a book that I have not read. In general, the action elements outweigh the nonsense of the script. Ridiculous soldiers come out one by one to gracefully fight and die, looks stupid, but entertaining (should be the slogan of this film).
The main problem here is the raised level of seriousness and extrim pathos, while it's an action movie for 15-y.o. (especially the last scene). If the film was served less intensely, then the main flaws would be an overabundance of annoying clichés.
A few points that I don't understand at all: a team of Afro-americans is flying to Murmansk - city where Africans have not been seen since the day of foundation, it is very useful to get lost in the crowd? In the satirical film «John Wick» the protagonist's puppy was accidentally killed, but here they massacre the entire family for no reason! Just to motivate the script..
Of course, it is very difficult to put together an eventful scenario, there is not enough time to reveal everyone, build a story, it is easier to teleport people, endow superpowers, but in the end it all came down to pathetic.
The Simpsons (1989)
Used to be a wonderful bold satire show
It seems that animation budget grows every season, but the characters literally die. The plot has become so insipid and secondary that it is almost impossible to watch. Of course, it is difficult to keep the bar after so many years, but The Simpsons does not stand up to criticism, both with the old seasons and with other shows, of which there are so many.
Disenchantment build a strong characters that was developing on our eyes; Rick and morty masterpiece ridicule the political and social defects of different systems; even the dirty family guy is not afraid to point out the obvious flaws of modern social fashion. The Simpsons have slipped into disgrace for me.
At least we have first great seasons.
Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017)
So-so
The first part of the campaign is quite normal: tons of nostalgia, beautiful scenery, a lot of silly adventures. The plot, as usual, revolves around a strong woman fighting a bad white man-father, but it doesn't really bother, now it's stuffed everywhere.
But the last part is a complete nightmare. Absolutely dumb script, terrible characters evolution. Deus ex machina rised to an infinite cliche. It's a shame that Star Wars has turned into a disgrace.
Arcade multiplayer quite fun. Beautiful picture, the main game has become noticeably better since the release
Breach (2020)
B-movie with Epic actors, quite fun
The film itself is a collection of plagiarism, I don't know, 50 different films? Bad visuals, bad staging create a comedic effect. It would be cool if they did it on purpose, but no.
The only thing that piques interest is cool actors like Thomas Jane, Timothy Murphy and so on. Callan Mulvey and Bruce Willis look great on confrontation before the fight scenes .. uh .. it's like a school YouTube video. Very bad visuals of shooting, flames, monsters, explosions. I've seen homemade videos of the same or better quality.
Maybe if they focused on the genre of deconstruction with small but high quality effects, it would be a great movie.
Truth or Dare (2018)
Don't be confused, there are two films of the same name, a pathetic one and this
Both were released out within two year, the covers are similar. The plot is quite simple, children's group games are elevated to the horror and break teenage lives, quite routine and primitive for an American horror movie, but the ending is pretty good.
If there were a lot of good horror movies lately that didn't stick to silly visual FX, I would rate this one lower, but alas, it could surprise with something.
All sorts of nuns, curses, crazy mothers, hypertrophied maniacs already make me sick, especially with kids in the center of the plot. The whole industry in the crisis, I think.
Lovecraft Country (2020)
Don't be fooled by the first five minutes
Another social drama about the complexes of African-americans with a minimum of plot. It is extremely boring to watch the development of the characters.
The main action begins at about 55 minutes of the first episode. I'm not sure I can handle the second. Nothing to do with Lafcraft.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Picard at the children's camp.
Who wrote the script? It's absolute cliche. Where are the interesting characters, interesting events? They are all dead, only memories. I was impressed by the first episode retrospective but then it start to turn into Discovery. Why..
Boring characters with a model appearance, they don't need to learn, they don't need to train, they have no justified talents. Starting from episode 3-4, the series rolls into a teenage cartoon, reflecting the complete incompetence of the scriptwriters.
As in Discovery, the series completely lacks any positive morality or motivation. The creators are in isolation from reality, there is nothing to revise here, another one-time product. Picard is the only well-developed character, and that is the merit of other people
Altered Carbon (2018)
Horrible miscasting season two.
Replacing main actor who made career on thrilling roles on whom? Some guy from marvel with stone face? it's just not his role.
I can't focus on the new episode. Now I absolutely sure, that the first season was self-sufficient.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Any skepticism about American dullness is finally dispelled.
The main story in this game is all you need to know about the US historical education. This game is like the DPRK propaganda, but released by american publisher.
Remember the war-crimes in WWII committed by Nazi Germany in Europe and Japan in Chine? Now replace these culprit to your country. Unbelievable stupid.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Not great, not terrible
Unlike offended kids below, I don't remember cartoon series, and doesn't read comix. It's hard to compare something with First movie (2000) due it was filmed in materially-minded approach. Other films, especially about Werewolf and Apocalypses were meaningless commercial, I think that people who made those "craft" doesn't proud at all.
Dark Phoenix closer to commercial-one, with the focus on action and CGI. The main plot now doesn't spin around humans and mutants, but something else.. yes it make movie even less serious (but at least it's not that primitive as time-travel).
Strengths
On the other hand where is no Deus ex machina (like super-dupper hidden powers or techs), no desecration of the past, no artificial agenda. Plot are really clean and focused.
So I don't understand negative reviews, cause this movie at least not flirting with the past or real world. It's not that childish as near-past filmed or pretended as Endgame. I finely got entertained from x-man-movie since 2003 maybe (exclusive Logan drama spin-off).
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Full copy of "In Order of Disappearance (2014)"
Same script, same Director, same visual. I understand US viewers doesn't used to localisation, but make absolutely the same product with another actors.. Why.. Is it a theater, a book, maybe some classic? Or just fabrication.
Almost all Remakes of popular European films like "Pure Luck", "The Toy", "The Man With One Red Shoe" were absolutely unnecessary even for US market. But they making em again and again till nowadays. I feel the huge crisis of original works now days.
Funny exception was "HEAT" 1995 by Michael Mann, that is actually a remake of "L.A. Takedown" 1989 of the same director, but where were such a huge improvement in every aspect, that film became true classic.
A shame.
Men in Black: International (2019)
Offensive movie for the fun of franchise
In 1997 character of Will Smith were talented but impudent police officer, so fundamental in his work that sacrifice his civil life to fight REAL threat. He had to compete with the best, had chose, had to deal with the consequences.
Character of Tommy L. Jones just lose his partner, and he knew, he train his own REPLACEMENT. He start to remember his past civil life and looks suppressed by the circumstances.
In new film (2019) you got NONE of this. Main character just granted everything, for the beautiful eyes. No competition, no sacrifice, she doesn't even care about police job (what MIB actually are)! Wth? Ex-Tor is a stupid forgetful boy with poor jokes .. and that's all? Where the comparison with real life? Anything?
Slow-mo, CGI, mutants.. a lot of plagiarism even on itself! (not nostalgia, but cliche). Eh. The worst episodes of cartoon series Rick n Morty are so, unbelievably better than this.. that I found it offensive. I wait this movie, re-watch prequels and get spittle in the soul.
Oh, and again the most powerful creatures in last movies doesn't killing people, they throwing em like a wrestlers (remember Terminator 5?) No danger, zero interest. Pathetic.
For the 2019 year it's not the worst film, so it fairly deserve some rating, but I want to drive to the ground.
Ibara no O (2009)
Standard anime with kids and bodybuilders
It seems, that last generation of Japanese writers are obliged to create story around school-girls and huge bodybuilders. They got great ideas and smash em at the dumbest characters.
After interesting prelude outline and impressive visual you had to watch talking patterns until you eventually start scrolling timeline.
Compare to this decade King of Thorn not that bad. Good visual, multicultural characters, lots of fanservice, but with zero art ambitions. I understand why.. but still is a shame.
The Lion King (2019)
not worth it
Plagiarism on plagiarism.
Sorry, Disney, your imagination is too short. Sorry, Disney, your imagination is too short. Sorry, Disney, your imagination is too short.
The Twilight Zone (2019)
Waste of time
Watched 5 or 6 episodes, actually I didn't even remember. Stereotypical show with zero potential to engage the viewer.
Maybe it's produced not for me. Maybe all the good stories would be further, production quit standard but maybe too dark most of the time (ah.. it's Twilight Zone, I get it)..
Another show that created for payed reviewers, not the auditory it self. A shame.
Act of Valor (2012)
For 12 million movie looks cheap and pathetic
From the beginning it feels like a poor game from 90s.
Characters just jumping between main locations without any explanation. The bad guys and the good guys are know everything by default. Ok, it's not necessary for this film. Background are absolutely exaggerated nonsense, ok, it's also not necessary for this film.
The only thing remain is action:
It's unbelievable scripted. Even kids today are know how limited view for the shooter whether it sniper or machine gun. Sniper in the film got clear square view on every enemy outside... in jungle... from the bush. Even the guy on the second floor from down up. Every new enemy are also running from the sniper side.. that handy. Some people say it realistic but I saw Sightron S-TAC sight what has nothing common to that we see in the movie.
Then we got car chase. Any guy with the AK could easily kill half of the soldiers in those defenseless piece of crap that they stole. But this is a movie.
Then we see how sniper teleported on the other side of the river with the LAW. We also see that LAW has no scope, but next moment we look through the nonexistent zoomed sight... and so on for the rest of the film.
I don't understand what exactly people calling realistic, it's just another B-movie with a lot of patriotic speech and limited budget.
I really like makeup and some decorations, yes, but for 12-million (Sic!) movie it's not enough. For example, today we got TV series for 7-10 hours with smaller budget and MUCH better filming.
Hold the Dark (2018)
-
Heavy movie. As you can see from many reviews, this film were made not for "pop-corn" generation. It contains different kind of sorrow and regrets, which were depicted by contrast of wild nature and dying traditions and people with no future.
Despite to many complains it were professional made with every word on right place.
