Places in the Heart (1984)
Always A Place In My Heart
I've been watching this movie since I was a small child and I loved it even then. But as I get older I grow to appreciate it more as I realize it is a movie about people helping people. Whether black, white, poor, blind, it's a household full of people helping people during hard times better known as the Great Depression. Sure, not everyone is good but not everyone is. Places in the Heart will always have a special place in my heart and now that I own it on dvd I hope my own children will watch it and it will always have a special place in their hearts as well. This movie gets an easy 10/10 from me.
The Black Phone (2021)
Not for Old Fogeys like me.
It could have been really great and I really wanted to like it. That's why I gave it two stars. But I just can't get on board with kids violently beating one another and constantly dropping the F Bomb, especially when the little girl uses an F Bomb toward Jesus. I didn't really care for the scene with the little girl getting beat with the belt either. I guess I'm just getting old but to me, that's not the needed elements to make a good and impressionable film. If they had spent the time and effort on the grabber and basement scenes as they did the violence and swearing from the kids it would have been a great film.
Stillwater (2021)
Could have been really great...
I gave this a 5 because I genuinely liked it, but I didn't... the acting was great with interesting characters but there we're way too many subplots and the daughter was just horrible. I didn't care if she got out of prison or not. She had already done over half her time so I didn't really understand why it was such a big deal to get her out. Plus it was very slow and way too long.
Overcomer (2019)
It just keeps getting better
Often times movie makers start with a really good movie and if they are fortunate they make a string of good movies that span throughout the years of their career. But it isn't very often that the movies get better as they go. This isn't the case with Alex and Stephen Kendrick. The first one I watched from them was Fireproof. Then Courageous. Then The War Room. All fantastic movies and each one was a little better than the last. And having just watched Overcomer I am blown away at what a great movie it is. The best yet. And I'm not just saying that because it is a faith based film. It's just an all around great movie. I often hear people say (me being one of them) that there are no good movies being made anymore. Everything now is dull, full of plot holes, contains way too much sex, violence and profanity to be suitable for a family to watch. Not so with the Kendrick Brothers. To me a great movie pulls every emotion out of you throughout the film and leaves you with the best emotion at the end. It leaves a positive impact on you and you're glad you watched it. You want to see it over and over again. That's exactly what Overcomer did for me. And I have never seen anything close to sex or extreme violence in their films and have never heard anything close to profanity in their films. So if you're looking for some great well made movies that the whole family can sit down and comfortably enjoy together, I HIGHLY recommend Kendrick Brothers movies. And I highly recommend Overcomer because, like I said, I believe it's the greatest one yet. I can't wait to see what else they come up with in the future.
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)
A beautiful piece of cinematography
I'm almost 33 years old and I have watched this movie all my life. My parents watched it when I was a child and I still watch it today with my own family. It is a beautiful story about love and friendship. I rate it right up there with Lonesome Dove as one of the best films ever made.
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (2018)
Time to hang it up Sam.
Absolute and complete garbage. Don't waste your time. I would have given this a 0 if I could've. Wooden acting and a storyline full of plot holes and don't get me started on the whole bigfoot nonsense. Given Sam Elliot's legendary status I was actually embarrassed for him watching this train wreck of a movie.
Halloween (2018)
A solid 9
The only reason I gave this movie a 9 instead of a 10 is because I was a little disappointed in the ending. I expected Michael Myers to go out with a glorious bang, but instead he...didn't. Then again, maybe he didn't go out at all? Other than that I thought the acting was good and the gore was creepy without going over the top. A great horror movie for mature teens and adults to enjoy.
The Poison Rose (2019)
Why the hate?
I watched this film today with my wife and neither of us understand the negative reviews. I thought it was a well acted and interesting movie. I didn't find it boring at all. I guess people don't enjoy a good crime drama anymore.
A Madea Family Funeral (2019)
Rock bottom
The Madea movies started out funny, but over time they have just became vulgar trash. It seems to me that the Madea franchise has hit rock bottom and I have to say I'm glad it's finally coming to an end.
