So heartwarming
14 May 2024
I love otters. LOVE them. So when my friend told me about this movie, I cleared my schedule and watched it that same night. It is such a heartwarming story - so beautifully shot, and beautifully told. I cry at anything involving animals and this was no exception - I cried for basically the whole last hour. Mostly happy tears, but still, just be warned that you might need tissues. The cinematography alone deserves an award, the landscapes are incredible and the scenes captured are truly breathtaking. I've never been to that part of Scotland but I immediately want to plan a trip there. If I happen to meet and fall in love with an otter, then so be it!

Disappointing
17 February 2024
I LOVE Pedro Pascal. I LOVE Pedro Almodovar. I really like Ethan Hawke. So I was really excited when I heard about this short film. Perhaps that's why I was so disappointed in it, I had such high hopes. But it is just very much no bueno.

Because it's such a short film there's not a lot of time for character development - I'm aware that makes things tricky. But pretty much the whole 30 min is the two main characters having expository conversation. Then a few minutes of action, more exposition, the end.

There is one flashback scene with two actors who look nothing like Pedro and Ethan. So that was a bit odd too.

The dialogue, besides being almost purely expository, was stilted and awkward.

The whole thing was awkward and just not good. I'm giving it 5 stars because at least it was only 30 minutes and only cost $3 to watch. If it had been a full-length feature that I'd paid more to see, I would probably give this 2 stars. Lo siento.

Heartbreaking
17 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was a huge wrestling fan as a teenager/young woman, but the von Erichs were a little before my time. Regardless, I was familiar with their heartbreaking story, and I was so looking forward to this film, even though I knew it would be devastating. I saw it in the theater on opening day, and have thought about it many times since then. At first I wasn't sure of the director's decision to leave Chris out of the film, but after seeing the movie I fully agree with his decision and I think it was the right move. He (the director) did an incredible job with the story, balancing the highs and lows of a family who suffered so much tragedy. Zac Efron was fantastic as Kevin, and I wish he'd gotten some awards attention for this role, but it seems like A24 chose to focus their campaigning only on Past Lives this awards season (that one is amazing too though!) Truly, all of the cast did an amazing job and while this film is too heartbreaking to watch multiple times, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves/loved wrestling and wants to experience some quality, emotional cinema.

Yikes
4 July 2023
The negative reviews are unfortunately completely accurate. I couldn't even get through the first episode. The plot has potential, but the writing is terrible and then everything quickly becomes unbelievable and just dumb. I was wondering if it would improve but checking the reviews here confirmed what I suspected, that it does not improve. I'm struggling to come up with enough words to describe how much I did not want to continue watching it, but I quit the first episode with about 15 min left to go and it seems like I made the right choice. Life is too short to watch crappy TV. It's a shame, I wanted it to be good! Whew, minimum character limit met.

Frustrating but eventually great
19 June 2023
I love Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and Kathryn Hahn, but I hated this show for 6 episodes. However I have to attribute that to the fantastic acting those three did. I hated Paul Rudd's character (Dr. Ike) so much, and I couldn't wait for Will Ferrell's character (Marty) to finally realize what was happening and stand up to Dr. Ike. I liked the show and was intrigued by the plot, I just hated feeling so frustrated after every episode, wishing Marty would wake up to Dr. Ike's manipulation. Anyway - if you're feeling frustrated, hang in there. Oooh looks like we're out of time, that's all for today.

Horrible
10 February 2023
I love David Tennant. I'll watch anything he's in. And that's how I found myself watching one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I knew I hated it and wanted to give up after 30 minutes but my husband hates to give up on shows and wanted to keep watching - it was torture. It was absolutely terrible. Stanley Tucci was great and his character's storyline was the only remotely interesting and redeeming part of the whole thing. Other reviewers have done a great job of explaining why this show is awful, so I will just reinforce that they said and agree that you should watch something else. Literally almost ANYTHING else.

It's as bad as everyone says
26 January 2023
I made it through 21 minutes before giving up on this movie and deciding I didn't want to waste another hour and 40 minutes on it. It's disjointed and weird and there's no substance whatsoever. It's pretty to look at, the cinematography and sweet design and costumes are great, but that's the only positive I can think of. Harry Styles as Jack (in the 20 minutes I saw), was actually decent - I'd had low expectations based on the reviews I'd seen, so I was pleasantly surprised. Florence Pugh was great as always, and she's the only one who seemed to have anything going on in her brain. If I had nothing else to watch and this was on and I was unable to turn it off, I might finish watching it, otherwise it's a hard pass from me.

I had such high hopes
27 November 2022
I first read this book in the early 2000s when it came out. I LOVED it. I read it again a few years later, and I heard it was being adapted for a movie and Johnny Depp was attached to the project. Very exciting, and then so many things changed along the way and years later it's finally announced as a TV show by Apple, starring Charlie Hunnam, who I loved in Sons of Anarchy. So as you can imagine I am super excited, I've been waiting all this time for this. When the tv show was announced I decided to read the book again just so it'd be fresh in my mind when the show finally came out.

Well. Maybe if you watch the show with absolutely no knowledge of the book or the story, you'll like or even love the show. I waited to write this review because I wanted to give the show the benefit of the doubt, and see if it redeemed itself along the way. But I feel like I've seen enough of the show now to write a fair review and the general theme is that I'm disappointed. The book is so well written, and things obviously had to change a little for a tv adaptation, but I think they lost the magic of the book, and by veering so far from the true story, they've also added a lot of confusion. Again- maybe if you're watching this blindly with no previous knowledge of the story, you might be able to ignore or be oblivious to the flaws, but I am having a hard time even enjoying the good parts of the show because it is so different from the story I loved.

I also wonder if I hadn't reread the book so recently, would I be as disappointed as I am, and I'm not sure. There is so much that's different on the show. And as much as I loved Charlie Hunnam in SoA, and just in general, I think he's not quite right for Lin. And Abdullah's casting also seems way off from how he's described in the book. I will keep watching the rest of the season but I am just kind of heartbroken that I was so let down by this adaptation of such a great story. No dancing bear at all!! A travesty.

No. Just no
20 November 2021
I like The Rock. I like Ryan Reynolds. I like Gal Gadot. On paper this movie should have worked. But it is AWFUL. Honestly it is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. There is zero chemistry between the 3 leads. They seem completely bored by the whole thing. The comedic timing is terrible and falls flat. The ONLY reason I finished the movie is because I was on a long flight with nothing else to do. I would not recommend this to anyone, unless you like terrible movies.

Brave and beautiful, just like Val
22 August 2021
I have been a huge fan of Val Kilmer my entire life. The first movie I saw him in was Real Genius when I was like 9 years old, and I've been a fan ever since and have followed his career closely. When I heard this documentary was being made, I couldn't wait to see it. In anticipation, I started watching or rewatching as many of his movies as I could. Even though I considered myself a big fan, there were several I hadn't seen before. Watching them before seeing the documentary gave me better insight into his career, but it's completely not necessary. The documentary was amazing. Some of the early years footage, like from his time at Juilliard, was amazing to see. His son narrates it and he sounds just like his dad. It was incredibly moving to see more of his health battle, and his relationship with his kids. I cried so many tears that I gave myself a headache. It was beautifully done and just really wonderful to get a glimpse at such an amazing human's life.

Yikes. It's pretty terrible
28 November 2020
This show was recommended to me by a friend who loved The Big Bang Theory. I have never seen a single episode of that show so didn't have a reference point for Kaley Cuoco. But after finishing up another series and needing something to watch, I decided to check it out.

I got about 30 minutes into the 1st episode before I couldn't take it any more.

It's awful. The lead is not a good actress and it's impossible to have any empathy or sympathy for her character. She's not likable at all. The writing is cheesy and trite. The dumb blonde cliche is overplayed and lazy.

Don't waste your time unless these kinds of things (laziness, bad writing, bad acting) appeal to you. I have no idea how this show is getting good reviews.

Pure nostalgic fun
19 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie came out when I was 7 and I watched it hundreds of times as a young child/teenager. I lived in a small town and also loved to dance, like Janey, so I was enthralled by this movie. I decided to watch it again recently to see how it held up - and I still love it. Yes, it's super cheesy and typical 80s, and there's no award-winning acting in it. The writing isn't great either. But none of that matters. It's fun, it makes you want to dance, and the good guys win :) It made me so happy to watch it, even after all these years.
