The Glorias (2020)
Gloria is a legend
4.5/10 on IMDb?? Is that because anti-feminists who haven't even watched it are just giving it 1 star? I personally thought it was a great movie that told Ms Steinem's story in an honest and inspiring way without preaching or overdoing anything. Alicia Vikander delivered an amazing performance (as per usual), and so did everyone else.
The only criticism I have is that it was too unnecessarily slow at times, consequently making the overall movie much longer than it needed to be. It definitely could have been shortened by 30 or even 45 minutes.
Ayla: The Daughter of War (2017)
Heart Touching!
The most amazing foreign language film I've ever seen (and one of the most heart touching films ever, period)! I didn't plan on watching it, my parents and I were looking through movies and happened to come across this one and my mum said we'll just watch the first 10-15 minutes or so. Ended up watching the whole thing and not regretting a single second.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Worst Disney Live Action Remake
Dull and boring, in every aspect - the story, the acting, the visuals, just everything. Definitely not going to bother watching the sequel.
The Good Dinosaur (2015)
Doesn't Deserve the Hate!
Because this movie has always had such negative reviews, I avoided it like the plague. But I should know by now not to do that, because I did the same thing with Brother Bear and that's one of my favourite animated movies ever. Ok, to say The Good Dinosaur is also one of my favourites is a bit of a stretch - but I can tell you that it truly is a beautiful movie. The animation is PERFECT; oh wow, it is so gorgeous. Probably the most visually stunning Pixar movie. I don't think the plot is too slow, and I don't think it drags on - rather, I think it's just very simple. Simple does not equal bad. Also, and this is an important one, I relate to Arlo in many ways. I'm sure I'm not the only one, either. It's great to see a main character who genuinely struggles with self-confidence and anxiety and not being able to do anything right. The relationship between Arlo and Spot is adorable too. Spot is such an amazing, underrated character. I love him.
I can't believe it took me four years to finally get around to seeing this. But even more than that, I can't believe how much criticism it gets! I wasn't expecting to like this, in fact I actually wanted to hate it. But it was the opposite. I found it so endearing and so emotional. I was sobbing by the end of it. This only proves, once again, that just because majority of a movie's reviews are bad does NOT mean it IS bad. It means all opinions are subjective, and at the end of the day that's what reviews come down to. So I highly recommend this to anyone who loves simple but beautiful stories.
Cars 3 (2017)
The Best of the Worst
The fact that this is my favourite Cars movie and I only give it 6 stars (6.5) out of 10 is really saying something about the trilogy as a whole. I don't like the Cars trilogy. I think for the most part, the movies are weak and boring. The reason I prefer the third one is because I think it has a better storyline than the other two, and even though I see lots of reviews where people are complaining about how it ended, I personally like the ending. I think they did a good job with it.
Yet still, all in all it just isn't on par with the other Pixar films. If it weren't for the Cars trilogy, the lowest rating I'd give to a Pixar movie would be 7/10, which is pretty darn good.
I Am Legend (2007)
Will Smith is Amazing!
I found I Am Legend so interesting and engaging! That scene where Will's character has to kill his dog because she's been infected breaks my heart. It's one of the most memorable movie scenes that have stuck with me since. Will Smith gives an incredible performance - so raw and believable.
Back to the Future Part II (1989)
Past, Present, and Future - All in One!
Am I crazy to say I might actually like this more than the first one?! It's only by the ever-so-tiniest fraction though, because both movies are masterpieces as far as I'm concerned. The reason why I tend to lean slightly more towards this one, however, is because Marty and Doc travel to both the past, present, and future. I love that! I just love the uniqueness of each setting, and all the characters in the different years. The alternate 1985 is brilliantly done, so outrageous and eerily dark; and of course the future 2015 is very iconic. I'll never get bored of the 1st and 2nd BTTF movies.
Back to the Future (1985)
Best Time Travel Trilogy
I don't know a single person who doesn't like Back to the Future. It is such an epic trilogy! I am a huge fan of time travel. I think the very concept is intriguing and awe-inspiring. And Back to the Future parts 1 and 2 are my favourite time travel films. In fact, they're some of my favourite films ever, period. BTTF does an incredible job at explaining how time travel works without making it overly complicated. It is just so much fun and super rewatchable - I could watch both movies over and over again and never get bored. The music is amazing too, and I'd say this movie has one of the most memorable film scores of all time.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
Little Dialogue, Big Heart
Going into this movie for the first time, I was expecting something pretty chilled and laid back and fun. I was not prepared for such a mature, semi-dark movie with themes of animal abuse. And I was not prepared for the roller coaster ride of emotions that I ended up going through. But I am so thankful for the direction Spirit went and I'm so thankful that everything I wasn't prepared for ended up happening. There is very little dialogue, which apparently some people find boring but for me it gives the film way more depth. Spirit is a movie that means so much to me, and I really wish DreamWorks could make more meaningful movies like it.
As a side note, this film and what happens in it is actually the reason why I no longer attend any horse racing and I refuse to place bets on them. Horses, and all other animals, are worth far more than that. Thank you, Spirit, for teaching me such crucial and valuable lessons.
The Polar Express (2004)
The Most Magical Christmas Movie
I am so disappointed that The Polar Express is rated lower than 7/10. It truly is one of the most amazing animated movies I've ever seen in my life. The feelings I feel watching this are unlike any other - it makes me feel excited and joyful. It makes me eager to see what will happen next, even though I've seen it about a hundred times and already know what will happen next. It is the closest to making me (and my inner child) feel and wish with all my heart and soul that I could one day take a trip to the North Pole too. The music is stunning beyond belief and actually helps draw me into what's going on even more. The moral of the story is perfect and resonates with all of us who still believe. Honestly, I can't even find the words to express just how much The Polar Express means to me. It is intriguing, captivating, spellbinding, and 100% magical. An absolute masterpiece of a film.
The Fox and the Hound (1981)
There is Beauty in Sadness...
I don't know how else to describe this movie except beautifully heartbreaking. The first time I watched it, which was nearly two years ago, I was mesmerised. Completely and utterly mesmerised. I had no idea that Disney could create a movie this profound, this deep. I remember, once it was over, I just sat staring at the blank screen for 10 minutes with tears streaming down my cheeks. I couldn't move, I couldn't do anything except just cry and think about what I had just watched. The Fox and the Hound made such a lasting impact on me, and I thank Disney's Dark Age for giving us one of the most honest, real, emotional, and powerful movies that have ever been produced by the studio.
Johnny English Reborn (2011)
A Lot of Fun!
I love all the Johnny English movies, but this one is my absolute favourite. Maybe a 10/10 is a little high, but a lot of the reason I've rated it so is because of the first time I saw it in cinemas. I was with my best friend from high school, it was both our first time sitting in Gold Class, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. From start to finish, it was such an incredible experience. We couldn't stop laughing and because we were the only ones in the cinema, we were able to laugh loudly and talk about what was happening without worrying about other people around us. And even recently I watched Reborn again just to see if it was still as good as I remembered it. Well, it was. Sure, it's a bit cheesy and a bit silly, but it's a lot of fun and will keep you entertained - especially if you're a fan of Rowan Atkinson's comedic genius.
Casper's Haunted Christmas (2000)
I Actually Used to Like This??!!
I watched this all the time during Christmases when I was younger. Then just last Christmas, I hadn't seen it for many years and I thought I'd put it on again, for old time's sake.
...It was bad. I can't believe I actually used to like it so much that I'd watch it over and over again. I feel inclined to give it an even lower rating, like a 3, but I still respect the little kid in me. So 4 will have to do.
A Walk to Remember (2002)
Favourite Love Story - Ever
The love Jamie and Landon have for each other is so pure and innocent. Jamie changes his life in so many ways and helps him to see things from completely different perspectives, and I think that is absolutely beautiful. The ending may be heartbreaking, but it couldn't have been done any better.
Cinderella (2015)
Have Courage and Be Kind
A lovely, sweet take on what is possibly the most well-known fairytale. The changes that were made in this adaptation were necessary and helped emphasise the storyline. I don't think anyone could have portrayed the innocence, wholesomeness, and genuine embodiment of Cinderella more than Lily James. The original movie is one of my favourite Disney movies of all time, and I believe the live action does both the film and the princess justice. The animated Cinderella is kind and compassionate, but also low key sassy and does her best to stand up for herself and never loses sight of her worth - and I appreciate so much how the live action Cinderella kept those same qualities, but added even more to her personality. I also really appreciate that both her parents are quite a big part of the film and help influence and encourage Cinderella to always be kind, no matter what.
Cate Blanchett was (not surprisingly) also phenomenal as the stepmother.
This is definitely a Disney remake done right, and is the only remake thus far that has the special Disney magic and doesn't feel solely like a cash grab.
The Perfect Date (2019)
So Lame!
I already knew it would be bad because it's a Netflix teen romcom and Netflix teen romcoms are generally bad. This did a good job of reminding me why I just don't bother with these movies. Lame and cliché in every single way.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Just Wasn't Necessary
Sorry to everyone who loves this movie, but I really wish it didn't exist. Now, I've given it 6.5/10, so clearly I don't hate it. It is a great movie on its own. But the fact of the matter is, Toy Story IV is NOT its own movie. It is a part of the beloved Toy Story franchise, and that is how I am viewing it. And frankly, as a Toy Story movie, it doesn't even begin to compare. I spent the entire film waiting for the old characters, the gang, to have their moments to shine. It never came. All the old characters who we have grown to know and love dearly, were hardly in it. Instead, we're introduced to about 50 new characters, most of who I don't care for at all. Buzz, my favourite character and one of THE MAIN CHARACTERS, is barely in it either; and when he is, he just acts like a dumb robot who has no personality or conscience. Do you think we're stupid, Pixar? We saw him in the other three films! We know how smart and selfless he is! I just found the whole thing so strange and out of place. It's a nice enough story but, like I said, it doesn't feel like Toy Story without the essential characters. Didn't like the ending, either - it goes against everything Woody has stood for over the course of the four films. Toy Story III is still my Toy Story ending.
The Lion King (2019)
Pretty Good Disney Live Action Film
I don't know what all the hate is about? I personally enjoyed this live action very much. It stayed true to the story of the original the whole way through, making only very little changes, which I thought was good because The Lion King is such a classic that's loved by many and doesn't need to be changed at all.
Some minor criticisms I have with it are some of the voice casting. For example, Beyoncé's voice irritated me - especially her singing voice. It was hard for me to enjoy Can You Feel the Love Tonight because her voice was way too overpowering and the way she sings it just doesn't sit right with me. That's not to say she isn't a great singer, but just that I don't feel her voice really fit the song.
Otherwise, it is an enjoyable movie and sure it isn't perfect, but I don't think it deserves all the negative reviews it's been getting.
The Barbie Diaries (2006)
Worst Barbie Movie!
Without a doubt. It's just awful. The animation is ugly, the storyline is cliché, the characters are so cringe.
Pocahontas (1995)
A Beautiful Animated Movie
Hating this movie just because it isn't historically accurate is pretty sad. If you watch it with an open mind, remembering that it IS a Disney movie, I think you'll see just how beautiful it really is. It bugs me when people say it's racist towards Native Americans, because if anything, it shows them in a much better light than it does the White settlers. The song Savages is one of the most powerful songs to ever come out of the Disney Studios, as it demonstrates the pure hatred that the English and the Native Americans have for each other as well as Pocahontas being the middle person, the peacemaker, who wants to stop both sides from fighting. Colours of the Wind is the hymn of humanity, as it teaches us to respect the Earth and everything that lives in and on it. The romance between Pocahontas and John Smith is one of the most meaningful that Disney has ever created - their meeting scene is absolutely gorgeous, their chemistry is real and believable, and Pocahontas is able to open up the initially arrogant and shallow John's mind to see things in ways he had never seen them before. And in If I Never Knew You, they express their love and gratitude for one another in a song filled with so much emotion.
The animation is stunning, the songs are stunning, and the score is (in my opinion) the best Disney score. The ending of the movie adds so much more meaning to the overall message of the film, as it shows us that Pocahontas knows where her priorities lie and she remains forever loyal to her people because they need her - and the music that accompanies that whole finale scene does so absolutely perfectly.
This truly is one of my favourite animated movies of all time, and is my second favourite Disney movie.
Shrek the Third (2007)
A disappointing sequel
I honestly just can't believe that this is the best they could do for the sequel to the amazing first and second Shrek films. The first two were emotional, and funny, and multi-dimensional. The characters were very well-developed. The plots meant something and actually made sense. THIS one, however, has pretty much nothing going for it. It's kind of funny at times, I guess? But otherwise it's bland, lifeless, has no real point, and looks so darn cheap - similar to what a straight-to-DVD movie sequel looks like.
