You Can't Ask That (2016)
What this world needs more of
This show gives me hope for an increasing divisive world. Littered with insightful and genuine moments, answers lots questions that have passed through my mind while also shining a spotlight on my own preconceptions.
The Farewell (2019)
In love with this
Can't be unbiased about this one. Coming from an immigrant family and leaving China when I was 6 I saw so many similarities in the relationships and mannerisms between family members portrayed in this movie.
Amazing director for capturing these subtle nuances we 2nd gen Asian kids just accept as normal family banter until it's pointed out in this way.
This movie is witty and unapologetic and didn't treat the audience like tourists to our culture, just watch it I'm sure you'll take something away. I plan to watch this again with my parents and that's probably the first time I can say that about a movie.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Epic fantasy saga of our time
This series is simply amazing and despite being animated it is on par with fantasy epics of like LOTR and Never Ending Story.
The story is simple in that it is an adventure tale but it's the characters and their relationships that you fall in love with, with a lush and fully realised universe and beautifully diverse and inclusive characters, even the villain is portrayed like a real human with complicated and conflicting motivations.
The animation is great for 3D rendering and some set pieces are truly stunning, I would love to see these techniques incorporated into modern anime which still look blocky and robotic.
Would recommend this to anyone, gorgeously written and realised, I would love for my kids to grow up with more shows like this.
