Anne: A Strong Effort of the Spirit of Good (2019)
An important topic handled terribly!
This episode of Anne With An E handles an important topic about gender inequalities and injustice among fellow human beings, but the way it is presented in the show is not how it should be treated. Anne With An E is very much a show told from a female perspective, and although it has some strong male supporting characters, they are not always used in the best way. A topic this important should be explored in a fair and square way, not like this. As the show has mostly females in the lead roles, especially in this episode the men are treated as cruel, evil beings that treat women with constant disrespect and never abide by their personal rules. This may have been a somewhat correct statement for people at that time, but it is still not an excuse to make all men seem like the worst people ever and the women being completely innocent in the whole ordeal. That is simply not how the world works, men are also being mistreated by women and although this modern way of thinking was not accepted by everyone at the time, I think it serves to say that there most likely were men out there agreeing with the women. While watching this episode, I found myself being downright angry at the way men were depicted and I couldn't understand how the writers of the show didn't feel the need to also correctly explore the men's side of the story without them all looking like the villains. I am glad they included the small part of Jerry and Diana because it at least showed that women can also mistreat men, but because it was such a small part of the episode, it didn't quite leave the lasting impact I was hoping for.
