Batwoman: Pilot (2019)
Decent first episode
Faithful viewer of CW/DC (and really everything DC), and as far as first episodes go, it was fairly solid. Establishes it is a three year flashback (no clue if all of first season will be, at this point), which resolves any issues with the 1st appearance in last year's crossover special. The episode doesn't dwell too much on super deep backstory, and I appreciated that we don't have to wallow in traumatic backstory.
The "reveal" at the end was immediately obvious, and I'm fine with not having that mystery dragged out for even half a season.
The episode did a solid job of establishing the central cast, their relationships with one another, and putting Kate in the position to pick up the Bat.
Not incredible, but solid and enjoyable.
Superman Returns (2006)
The long wait is over
I thought the film was fantastic. It truly did justice to the character as portrayed by Reeve, and carries on the legacy superbly.
The actors did fantastic jobs. Routh could pass as a voice double for Reeve, and Kevin Spacey portrays criminal real-estate broker Lex Luthor with flair. Kate Bosworth did a pretty good job at single-mom Lois Lane, even if it did take me a bit to wrap my mind around the concept.
Superman continues to embody the greatest virtues of humanity, even if he is not exactly human. He is one of those heroes that is always needed by society, to be a symbol for everything that is good and just. The new film brought that symbolism home, without having to shove it in the viewer's face.
If you have a place in your heart for Superman, then I believe you will enjoy this film.
Go out and see it, and despite the PG-13 rating, take your kids.
Matthew Blackheart: Monster Smasher (2002)
My brain-pan hurts
Okay, this was a piece of almost unwatchable trash. I love "bad" movies, but I found it difficult to find this movie humorous because it was just that bad. The acting was horrible. The special effects were terrible. The plot was a cross between "Captain America" and "Frankenstein".
After watching I can honestly say my brain-pan hurt. The movie gave me a headache. Avoid this movie, unless you are a masochist.
I did get the feeling that the director was attempting to build an "Army of Darkness" vibe to the lead character and the plot. That also failed miserably.
I do not know how else to trash the movie.
