It's Bruno! (2019)
Bruno's Banter Beats Battlestar Galactica!
The deadpan delivery and camera work is reminiscent of original predecessors based on short comedy clips. The corniness factor as a levity tool will be lost on those outside gen x yet still finds originality. Bruno's plot is completely egocentric to the ideal of dog and dog owner and not exactly in that order. Malcolm, our protagonist, gets into his own shenanigans as a result of catering to Bruno's needs.
The simplicity of the story while maintaining comedy is kind of amazing. I did not expect to laugh as much as I did at this show. I suggest any proper canine owner to enjoy it.
Sollers Point (2017)
A sugarglass insight into vanishing middle class
Sollers point took me by surprise with its intense reflection into my own upbringing. Our main character Keith is struggling to maintain a balance between finding work, family, and friends after getting out of county lock up.
When the legal system fails to deliver rather than pick up the pieces and do better we see Keith's regression into what caused the setback in the first place. A mad downward spiral of easy money at high risk while pacifying racial relations to his own socioeconomic status.
Like most intuitive dramas there's really no gain or moral object to be had. It's just a story, one I have seen played out in real life hundreds of times making it more a zeitgeist of racial division and lack of industry and how it affects this generation. Movie is great but it left me feeling meloncholy and a bit sad because of its honesty.
Close (2019)
Realistic Portrayal of Action in Close
It's rare to watch a film and idealize the reality behind a character's choices. Close did exactly that and I had no idea that Sam was based on a real female body guard (Jacque Davis) until I researched it after.
Close is a genuine action film delivering a realist plot while mirroring that same concept in its action. You won't find overbearing female prowess to take down a baddie, in fact, Rapace's character tries to avoid as much confrontation as possible.
While some of the dialogue can get stagnant Close is a well paced sequence of attention grabbing action. A great film all around that I would suggest to anyone in the mood for some kidnap thrill.
The Devil's Chair (2007)
14 Days
The screenplay adaptation took a transition of 4 days according to the documentary of making the film.(Either a lie or it was a collage of different screenplays.) This film has everything you'd expect from a horror genre. Drugs, sex, and violence are the fundamentals in this film, in that order literally.
Our main character Nick decides to take his girl Sam to an isolated asylum and trip on acid. From that point on your skin is hooked with the introduction of the chair and the ensuing bad trip. Sam Disappears.
Four years later, a psychologist wishes to help Nick and regress his horrible experience by taking him back to the asylum. Accompanied by three of his staff they drive to the asylum to document his experience as he rediscovers what actually happened.
Gwai wik (2006)
Forgotten Relics
Recycle took me to the dark place in my mind that I know everyone has and questioned my past and how it related to the film. The writer takes us into an untapped idea to film dimension and does it with a frightening elegance. Watching scary films by yourself in the dark "should" make you stare intensely at the screen or jump unexpectedly and though it’s rare the film made me do both.
The short introduction of the characters is not lost in translation or facial expression, the build up is monotonous, and then you are siphoned into an ultra surreal world where anything is possible. Few musical sequences seemed out of place which I believe to be rare in a horror film. For the consumers who like an adventurous undertone to their horror this is a great film to watch with no interruption.
The Hitcher (2007)
Combo packed thrill of suspense and horror
I mistook this movie for a cheap low/mid budget remake of a classic, but was horribly wrong. Bean suspends what makes him such a great villain in this film. The sequence of plot was firm and unrelenting, the pace of thrill is astounding, and the emotion of the characters is realistic.
Despite the character background definition this is a film you can watch without guessing the next outcome. Thus, it's lack of predictability will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen in the continuing scene.
From beginning to end, this is what many would expect from a suspense/horror film. I would highly suggest renting or buying this movie.
