Evil (2019)
Hidden Gem destined to become a cult favorite
I don't leave many reviews but this series surprised me with its excellent stories, acting and smart scripts.
Especially considering that the series synopsis is that a demonologist and a foresic psychologist team up to investigate paranormal phenomena I had very low expectations.
It's unique in that it does not follow the usual tropes of possession, hauntings etc., but creates an original blend of scientific method and supernatural horror. It manages to provide satisfying third acts when most horror falls down.
Can't say enough good stuff about the acting and the story arcs for each episode so far. Especially the sophisticated way it weaves in modern technology like deep fakes, VR and wireless spoofing with genuinely spooky events.
I'd say the only other streaming horror series that is on the same level is the German series "Dark" again for the acting, pacing and story arcs.
Anyone tired of horror series that always fall apart near the end of the story will be impressed with this show. Just wrapped up its 3rd season to very good reviews.
Fear of Rain (2021)
Good Acting and OK Final Act
Any horror movie that rates over 5.0 I will watch. That's because horror movies are inherently flawed when the act 3 or 4 "reveal" finally shows. The reveal is usually something we cannot believe, and most times when we don't believe the movie falls apart.
This movie has a reasonable premise and enough suspense to make it to the final act. At that point it doesn't fail miserably so I give it a 7.
Actually good watchable characters and suspense. Worth a watch.
Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa (2020)
A horror movie that actually works
So any horror movie that works at least on some level these days deserves a 5.0, because they are mostly retelling other stories and if there is something new then it has merit.
This is a retelling of the famouse witch, and it has great suspense and horror with fantasy elements.
Creepy for sure, and that makes a good horror movie.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Its about Being There after the Invasion
The USA version of War of the Worlds was a big budget explosion a minute film, and this version is the complete opposite.
It's about the experience of surviving an invasion, and understanding what happened. It is slow paced because it is character driven.
It's a bit like The Stand meets Dark Mirror but with some very good alien robots for a very engaging show. I loved the pacing and although some characters are outright irritating, I think that's part of the theme; everyday people with faults have to survive the apocolypse and evade killer robots.
