Sorry to Bother You (2018)
I actually liked it. Bizarre, but hysterical.
I'm more of a horror fan, but at times I opt for the lighter side with comedy. This movie was a never-ending amount of wtf's...that actually made me laugh while being thoroughly entertained. I agree the ending was weak, and the turn was completely unexpected since it veered from reality into science fiction territory, but I'd watch it again in a heartbeat.
The Shed (2019)
Ummm OK kinda
It had plenty of scenes that simply didn't make sense and pretty obvious what type of things were about to happen all throughout the movie. However there was a bit of a plot twist in the end.
The two things that seemed unbearably nonsensical to me, is, (one) if you have a vampire living in your wooden shed on a farm, far away from people, why in heavens would you not set it ablaze during one of the many sunny days available?
Secondly, even though the vampire wronged the main character, the vampire seems to have a personal vendetta out for him for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
There's no backstory, so you really don't know what's the deal with the vampire population. Is it just the one at the beginning, what are the rules, etc
Spell (2020)
It was alright.
I kept waiting for the twist. By the end, I wasn't a huge fan, but, my boyfriend really liked it.
I wasn't impressed with the inconsistency of pain for a serious injury. It wasn't believable that someone could sustain the type of injury he had and not be largely incapacitated. He moved around like he stubbed his foot instead. So yeah, that really bothered me. Plus, there were sensible chances for escape he didn't take.
And the same voodoo powder, worked completely differently on different people. Again, inconsistency.
I did not find any of the characters relatable or even with familiar personalities. I grew up around very country Black people /farmers and people with voodoo experiences. And the script is nothing like what you would hear from people with that background.
The characters, for me, were cringy and off-putting, they acted well, except for the parts I mentioned, but the script was terrible in my opinion.
I don't find voodoo dolls scary, however, Loretta was creepy acting. As many have said, I got immediate 'Misery' vibes.
It was interesting but not something I'd watch again. I'd recommend it to someone bored, but, I'd caution them to tame their expectations.
And for the people crying about diversity, cry me a river. If you're not putting that on every single review of majority white casted films (which are far more prolific) then politely shut up! You have NO room to speak!
Black Box (2020)
Unfortunately expected bias racist reviews, comments did not disappoint
I've noticed a pattern of films with Black leads, and or majority black cast, seems to be reviewed much harsher than majority white films on here.
For instance a commentor rated it a 5 and gave his review a title of "too dark" ... In reference to the the majority black cast-not the script.
From his viewpoint, the idea of Black professionals made it ridiculous, unbelievable, etc. Because apparently they don't have Black professionals, doctors, etc.
It's unfortunate when you're so small minded that a film with a majority black cast offends your senses, especially when there is next to none in existence - in spite of Blacks working in all professions(including the ones featured) , and not just the lower rungs of society as often portrayed via media.
I was hesitant to read the reviews because I knew this was the type of vitriol I would see, but I was curious as to how others viewed the film. I like to hear other perspectives/insights and constructive criticisms.
As for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting was great from all. The cast seemed very reminiscent to what I've experienced in life.
The talented Phylicia Rashad was great. Her voice is so calming. This was definitely a different from previous roles I've seen her in. I enjoyed the twist. It was a good movie and worth the watch. By no means was it a horror movie though. Nor was it B grade type, or less interesting Black mirror episode. 🙄
However, if you don't like Black people, you definitely won't like this movie, so skip it and save everyone from your racism- this isn't to say if you don't like this movie you're racist, but racist def won't like seeing successful Black people not being drug dealers/convicts/rapist and the usual stereotypes. I do find it interesting the number of reviews that felt a need to point out that its a majority Black cast.
I enjoy movies no matter the racial makeup. I just finished one with an all Indian cast, Chinese before that, and Native American before that. They were all good to me. Honestly, I'm a bit bored with the all white (esp American whites) casts-kinda feeling overdone at this point.
Abigail Haunting (2020)
It wasn't horrible
It kept my interest.
It had me rooting against the protagonist because she started being stupid.
Sitting down screaming in a bathroom corner instead of exiting the bathroom when a ghost was slowly creeping her way from the opposite side of bathroom, and she returns home to have confrontation with Foster mom after being choked out by a ghost at said home where ghost also choked Foster mom.
I was rolling my eyes at both and honestly the mom ghost actions towards the daughter didn't make sense.
Overall it was decent though.
Évolution (2015)
It's questionable
I agree with other reviews that there are some problematic scenes that seemed highly inappropriate for kids to participate in.
Best as I can tell, there is a remote island with a handfull of human hybrid young women that use stolen human boys as partial surrogates. Somehow the boys are able to remember some of their previous life before the island, but also don't seem to pushback against the new moms or bring it up the way you would expect.
Aside from that, it's super weird and ends with no explanation of the movie you just watched.
I don't understand why they gave the boys medicine, why the fed them some cooked worms as a daily meal, why they bled from the nose and on.
Def not for me...
I prefer my horror scary, explained, and with an ending.
Dead Rising: Endgame (2016)
It's fine
If you enjoyed the first one, I think you will enjoy this one as well. It's about the same quality etc. I didn't personally jump or get scared, but few movies do that to me anyhow.
Scare Campaign (2016)
It had several twists
I saw 2 out of 3 twist of coming shortly before they were revealed. It was great acting, really pulled me into the story. I would've loved for it to have ended with Emma being the one playing the final prank using the masked freaks. Interesting end, I would've like to have a little more idea of the actual ending.
Suite 313 (2017)
Complete garbage
The movie has some guy go in to rescue a woman that he feels compelled to constantly calls the b word, responds with hostility to all of her help for no clear reason, periodically ignores her advice, however, the woman steadfast helps him regardless of this-in hopes of being saved. He was far from a hero and the guy that you normally can't wait until he is offed. It was very cringy. I wrote this halfway through. I only got that far because I was only mildly paying attention.
Laughable entities too, some were okish, others were hysterical.
Collapse (2011)
Anything above a four is just being generous
Poor special effects, actors smiling when they're supposed to be sick, dead, or getting killed. Very predictable. A lot of backstory for no clear reason. It's not something I would watch if I wanted a truly scary movie. Just Another churned out zombie movie where characters are unfamiliar with the concept of zombies. Only about 25min in and had to laugh at myself for a jumpscare I saw coming well before it happened. Smh
And what appears to be grandparents are actually the parents raising a teen.
