Krypton (2018)
Good SFX, mostly written for teenagers who play D&D
The special effects and soundtrack are really good for a TV show. The dialog and plot are emotionally immature, swinging wildly from jealousy and angst to puffed up bravado. Tons of plot holes, and stupid "bro" speak which reminds me of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure without the humor. Whoever wrote this never had kids. But if you love spending hours throwing 12-sided dice and arguing over the nuances of which guild you'd belong to...then you'll love this "single-for-life" show.
Tales of the City (2019)
Best binge watch of 2019
Just watched it non-stop, like eating popcorn on pot. For the 50th anniversary of Stonewall this was a pleasant surprise. It's nice to see many of the original characters come back and view SF through new eyes-Mary Ann, Bryan, DeDe and Anna Madrigal anchor the show with off-beat humor and drama. Although Michael is not the original actor, he fits in with the rest of the gang really well. Personally, I think the back story of Anna's last secret is probably one of the most poignant episodes. Tales is still relevant today, and it makes you feel proud how far we've come.
Boy Culture (2006)
This was a very good gay film
I just came away from a screening of "Boy Culture" at the Seattle International Film Festival (where the director Q. Allan Brocka began his love of film), and thought "that was a very good gay film". The character acting was strong (especially the cameo part of Andrew's little sister "Cheyenne"). The audience all laughed throughout the film, which helped to ease the tension of some very powerful emotions. Derek Magyar pulled off the difficult job of being jaded and emotionally distant and yet a likable and charismatic character. "X" is part strong, silent, and manly and part Dorthy Parker with acidic observations. During the Q&A after the film, I found myself wanting to read more of the source material that Matthew Rettenmund has written in the original novel. IMDb doesn't give credits for Andrew's family but they really helped bring out his character more. While Darryl Stephens didn't have the same level of emotional non-verbal delivery that Magyar did, he was beautiful to watch and gave a strong performance. Jonathon Trent did a great job in the love triangle and made me think of the original "Queer as Folk" series.
