Jack and the Beanstalk (1952)
"Singin' In The Rain"
I saw 'Jack and the Beanstalk' in NYC during the Easter week recess (Easter Sunday was April 13, 1952). I believed it premiered on April 7, 1952. And this is how: We were standing on what seemed to be the longest line in history set to see "Singin' In The Rain" which premiered (on March 27, 1952) at Radio City Music Hall. This was a really an incredible day because we were going to see a wonderful movie in 'color', wow! We didn't even own a television set at the time so this was a very special day. Waiting on line proved to be too much especially for us kids and we decided to see the movie at an adjacent theater, 'Jack & the Beanstalk' with Abbott & Costello. We really like Bud & Lou and thought the movie would be great. I was only 5 years old at the time so not having to stand in line anymore and to be able to sit down was also somewhat of a consolation.
Unfortunately the movie was in black & white, i.e., not color. We kids all liked the movie and maybe in hindsight it was a better movie for kids than the one we were going to see at Radio City. I recently purchased 'Jack and the Beanstalk' on VHS and would rate it about a 6 out of 10. It was okay and pretty much suited for kids. Looking back though I wished we'd stayed on line because "Singin' in the Rain" is a 10 and a real classic. I just don't know if I would have appreciated seeing it then as a 5 year old???
It took a long time to figure out what movie we were standing on line for at Radio City that day but your website helped figure it out, finally!!!
The Last Mile (1959)
Absolutely outstanding performance by Mickey Rooney
Saw this movie when it came out in 1959, left a lasting impression. Great group of actors. A little short timewise but a great movie all the same. Have only seen once since then and that was some time ago. Hopefully they'll put it out on DVD if they haven't already.
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
WW II Vets are real life heroes
Possibly the greatest story of our post war veterans from WW II trying to put their lives back in order. No civilian(s) could ever really understand what it meant to be in combat whether in the air, on land or at sea. The country really pulled for our WW II vets, not so for Korea or Vietnam. Too bad!!!
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
top ten science fiction film of all time
One of the great science fiction films. too bad they have not considered making a remake for it's 50th anniversary. I saw it on 11-21-51 over the thanksgiving week. at 5 years of age it was amazing then and incredibly still is amazing now. great actors, screenplay and black & white film all contributed to its greatness. here we are 50 years later and we still have not learned much about living together in peace.
