The Brave (1997)
Wake me up when its finished
Well as a BIG Depp fan I was eager to sit down and watch my brand spanking new copy of The Brave.
We all know that Johnny is prone to some interesting and outlandish roles full of moody shots and long silences however this film, that Depp himself directed, goes one step too far.
The film plot develops at snail pace and by the time something notable happens I was really past caring. The problem for this film is that from the initial opener, setting the scene of a potentially exciting story, to the climatic ending you have to watch an hour of lethargic deep and meaningful nonsense in the middle which is neither deep nor meaningful.
Depp appears to almost play a parody of his own broody persona becoming an annoying caricature of himself at best.
I believe that JD is an awesome performer and has great integrity as an actor which has been displayed many times by his choice of roles. However this film also makes it evident that it is perhaps best if Johnny leaves the direction to others to ensure we see the best of him.

Unexpected Great Film
I caught this film almost by accident. Being an ardent Ice Hockey fanatic I stumbled across this and decided to stick with the 1995 TV movie but I didn't have high hopes, however I was pleased to find that this was a fantastic historic piece around the original six, Ted Lindsay and the formation of the NHLPA. Not only did I find an absorbing off ice story told with great honesty and integrity but also some excellent on ice action too! I didn't really know the story of the original six and trials and the tribulations they went through in the 50's and 60's but this film really opened my eyes to what was going on! I wont tell you though, go out, hire, buy, beg or borrow and see for yourself! Miracle and the other Hollywood films get the attention but for me this is one ice hockey film you have to own if you are a true fan of the game!
