Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
A film that had to be made but......
Firstly kudos to Mr. Grann for writing the book and Mr. Scorsese for making the movie. This story had to be brought out albeit after so many years. It still jolts me that as recent as in the 1920s, the most modern country in the world, treated colored lives as dirt, well it still does but that's another story. Rest assured, this movie, for all it's flaws, is going to get a few Oscars just for showing up.
I have a few peeves as is evident with my rating, this movie is 3 hrs 26 odd minutes long. It didn't have to be, it would have been much pacier if it had been half of that. There was no need for it to have been so long. I am used to long movies and I am used to slow burners but this particular one did not have to be both at the same time. I don't know if the dialogues have been recorded at a low volume or my theatre had it at that level but some of the dialogues were inaudible. I heard a lot of snoring more clearly than the dialogues in the sparsely occupied theatre on the first Friday it released.
Acting wise I know Lily might get an Oscar just for showing up but she was insipid in this movie. Leonardo and De Niro and almost everyone else were good. Production quality over all was good as is expected from a Scorsese flick. The last bit just before the credits was a masterful touch, that's how you keep production costs down and show the world you are a genius.
Quick recap, great story, absolutely had to be made, should have been under 2 hours.
Scoop (2023)
Binge worthy
This series is absolutely binge worthy. We finished all episodes in one sitting. Very tight script and excellent execution. I was pleasantly surprised with Karishma Tanna's effort in this series, she has transformed herself for the incarcerated period of this character. Acting wise she has excelled in most parts but unfortunately has taken the easy path during a few scenes. Zeeshan Ayub has excelled, crisp dialogue delivery and expressions. Hiten Bhojwani has done a great job. Harman Baweja has been wasted (what happened to this dude? Could barely recognize this erstwhile Hrithik lookalike). Hansal Mehta has done a stellar job in directing this series, Hats off, Sir.
Phone Bhoot (2022)
It is a deceivingly decent
I wanted to shut this movie in the first 15 minutes or so, but stuck along and it became a lot better as it progressed. It is a brainless comedy, but has some startlingly genius moments, like that bhoot of the groom from Mirzapur, etc.
All in all, this is not a copy of ghost busters, but a slapstick yet witty at times comedy. Watch it for what it's worth.
Production values are decent, a couple of songs are good. Jackie shroff is , well, Jackie Shroff. Ishan comes across good, Siddhant acts as the buffoon aptly, Katrina has done a decent job, her acting chops have come a long way. The movie could have been a lot better, for sure, but it is not trash the way it is.
United Kacche (2023)
Absolutely horrible
In all the episodes there's barely 2 minutes of entertaining stuff. Utterly disjointed effort with no relation to the struggles of immigrants and even though I like Grover, I have to admit he can't act yet. He used to be brilliant in Kapil's show and where ever else he stage performed on TV but he has trouble with an entirely scripted show and that is clearly evident. I guess he needs a crowd's reaction and also his co actors reactions to act effectively without that he looks like he is high throughout the series. His acting in sunflower was the same, lack luster. Everyone else even in 2 minute roles act better than Grover and that's disappointing.
You can give this a miss, thank me later.
The Pickup Artist (2019)
Epochal
It is rare when one can watch a movie and mention the word epochal. If this movie had a few more crores budget and a superstar acting in it people would've been screaming praises from every roof top. This movie is a lost gem, can't imagine how many people have missed this movie because of no fanfare associated with it.
Pros: totally different from any movie you will ever see.
Cons: if I have to nitpick they should have shot with Live audio, but that surprisingly needs a bigger budget. Dubbing sort of takes away a bit from the movie's grittiness.
Overall a masterpiece, must watch. I hope it gets the cult status it deserves.
Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story (2021)
Very well Paced
Extremely well shot mini series, almost felt it could be longer, it's that well paced. Some events were illogically convenient like parking your car right where the one you are following takes a cab from, etc but a very engaging series nevertheless. Can't wait for the next season.
Gehraiyaan (2022)
Excellent movie
It was a slow burn movie, the promos sort of lead towards a mindless chick flick kind of a movie but this movie is actually a tight drama. Excellent visuals, great production values and well acted by everyone, even Ananya. Must watch.
Thalaivi (2021)
Absolutely rubbish movie
A totally disengaging, garbage movie. Pathetic acting, I think Kangana needs to quit while she is ahead and join politics full time. She has lost her entire craft, which is surprising. Her last few movies although they have flopped she at least tried to act, the problem is lately I see, she has resorted to cliched acting.
Do not believe in all these paid for max ratings, this movie is not worth wasting your time. P. S I very rarely find a movie to be bad because I have first hand knowledge and I value the hard work put in by the behind the scenes people but this movie doesn't even deserve a zero rating.
Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021)
Don't believe the biased reviews, it's a good movie
First off the bat, this movie deserves a 7 out of 10 but I gave it a 10 to balance the misguidedly biased ratings on imdb. Misguided because people raise this brouhaha about nepotism yet they do not have a problem using a Jio telephone or internet plan or buying any of the plethora of products from industries where Nepotism is blatant, which is everything from cement to fabrics to steel and everything in between. Even the home minister's son is the secretary of the BCCI, so should we stop watching cricket ? We as a nation need to grow up and smell the coffee.
As regards the movie it is well shot, good production values, a bit slow at times which sort of messes with the tempo of the movie ( hence why it's a 7/10). The story is decently tight and will keep you engaged. All in all a good one time watch and one of the better movies to come out in recent months.
Project 9191 (2021)
Great show. A sleeper hit.
Excellent show, very fast paced, keeps you on the edge through out. Ignore the negative reviews, they are biased based on their own prejudices. This is one of the best Indian shows I have watched in the recent past. Kudos to the team to deliver such a quality product in spite of the evident low budget. Editing is crisp, acting is decent, direction and story is great. Due to the extremely fast pacing of the show it might initially appear half hazard, also due to the pre existing conflicts depicted within the team it might appear a bit forced in the initial couple of episodes but it all makes sense by the end. Can't wait for season 2.
Sandwiched Forever (2020)
Clean light comedy
Reminded me of the olden golden comedies like " Yeh jo hain zindagi". Clean and light comedy. Everyone has acted very well. Punches land very well. Some very well concealed Easter eggs (If you know, you know) too.
Thanks to the makers of this show. Please come up with a second season pronto.
C U Soon (2020)
What an awesome movie
This movie was shot on an iphone during the pandemic, I find it very hard to believe because this movie is so beautiful. Hats off to the editor of this movie, he/she deserves an oscar for sure. Brilliantly paced movie, genius editing, almost made me forget the real message of the movie. Why are not more people talking about this movie ?
Color Out of Space (2019)
Who gave this GARBAGE such a good rating ?
This has made it to my top 10 Worst movies ever. Absolute filth. The actors seem to be acting in separate movies together. Their enactments of their scenes do not share the same vision they individually have. Confused yet ? yes that doesn't even begin to explain this misfortune of a movie. Have you ever come upon a group of people who all have different interpretations of something? Now imagine them all acting their own versions of reactions to the same thing. It is mind boggling.
I suspect Nick Cage fans gave this movie a great rating, but they are doing a disservice because other Nick Cage fans like me would rather remember him for roles in his earlier stellar movies.
If you want to waste an hour and fifty minutes of your life watch paint dry on a wall instead, it might be more fulfilling.
Kadakh (2019)
Kadakh movie
Real good movie, very tightly scripted. It is a chaotic setting with a lot of actors in a relatively small place and it must have been difficult to shoot it and sound mix it, but the creative team has done a great job. Full marks to everyone including the actors and the director Rajat. Every time I see a Rajat Kapoor movie I am impressed. Pure Class !!!
Choked (2020)
Absolutely brilliant movie
Very well made movie, very good script, great production values. Nicely acted and directed. I am not a great fan of Anurag Kashyap but I must admit he has surprised me with this one. Kudos to him and the team on a really engrossing movie.
You will find a lot of negative reviews because it deals with the mega BS showered upon the poor middle class people due to the absurd overnight demonetization. It shows the plight of the aged and the aging who had to stand in queue for hours at end only to be told the new bills were over. Some people do not want you to be reminded about that failed experiment and how people bypassed the whole thing and black money was and is still rampant.
This movie is not about demonetization though, it doesn't even judge the whole exercise, it is merely a prop along with the middle class apartment building and it's occupants. It's a story about greed and missed opportunities and finally about mistakes and compromises, variations of which every middle class family makes.
Watch this movie for what it is, at face value, and I bet everyone will enjoy it.
Paatal Lok (2020)
Absolutely brilliant.
This show is easily one of the best shows I have watched and that includes shows from all over the world. Very well paced, very tightly scripted, beautifully treated, well directed, exceptional acting and professional production values. It is one of those shows which should be a sole seasoner, a second season might take away the beautiful sheen from it. Kudos to everyone involved with the show. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Fixerr (2019)
RUBBISH
Beware of the paid shill reviews and ratings for this show. This is an utterly bakwaas show. Bad production quality, bad direction, bad acting, bad script, bad editing. A bunch of 8th graders could have come up with a much better show. Don't waste your time.
