D-War (2007)
I begged the guy next to me to shut the DVD on that bus trip.
But no. Spending the 2 hours of my life watching something as off as this makes me realize how I would be the guy in the next row. Sleeping and oblivious to watching a movie that was just what wanted me to sleep.
Let's just say the movie itself was a Korean folktale go West. But then, the guy didn't have inherited and magical/ kung-fu powers. The girl was hopelessly useless even if she can be more athletic than the rest of the people, and that she dream that bad things that happen. And Runs. The monsters have no true scientific weakness. And yeah, the bad guy speaks Korean. Do the guys even know what the hell he's saying? And the guy and the girl became boyfriend and girlfriend 2-3 hours after first meeting. Sweet.
The plot was full of holes I can't understand. Okay, how does the person know that THAT bad guy was looking for the girl? How the man will go back home? how the hell do they take elevators due to an emergency... How did they go to the beach so fast! Why did the guy look for the girl? The Only thing good about the movie was the CG. That's it. Spending 75 million dollars on the CG that looks like a PS3 Video game but horrible acting, lost plot lines, and such nonsense of dialog that you would realize that you just want to go out that bus window and die on that highway... Well, that's exaggeration, but something to get into the feeling.
Plus, this was a popular movie in Korea. Yeah. Not much to say there. The Koreans in the US Expected the Movie to have the Korean Flair. Where was it? So in the end. D-War will only work if you wanna abbreviate a pretty good Chinese game called "Dynasty Warriors", But then, the Korean film got that title first. Now to find a new abbreviation.
Other words. Don't watch it if you still want to feel the 2 hours rushing sweetly in your face.
The Naked Brothers Band (2007)
I am thankful this is not a real band.
The idea was pretty useless. I would easily break this down.
Plot: Okay. So it's supposed to be a "documentary" or a "mockumentary." But it looked like random kids trying hard to actually look like they rule the music world, but so far I have only seen my cousin go gaga over this. I mean it. And about their music videos? Do you think people will watch it? One's about alien clones, Cowboys, Kissing, and Nat trying to make Rosalina notice him by putting "hidden meanings" on the lyrics. Same old. Not much on the whole "Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll" idea, they have.
Characters: Bad actors. The guys are in real music documentaries act better. And for their age to think of no innocence? Wow, that's a shocker.
Music: Uhm... Nat sounds like a girl. And the idea of the deep and interesting lyrics just made me gag so. They do were inspired by the Beatles, but it was then that the Beatles GIVE us some imagination and ideas of innocence. I don't know why the Naked Brothers sing about a crazy car. I bet the Beatles were rolling in their graves.
Jokes: Trying hard as usual.
Overall: Seriously, I don't like Hannah Montana. But between her and the Naked Brothers, I would have chose the blind guitar guy. He has a story, and plays with his soul.
Sengoku musô (2004)
Just another Japanese Dynasty Warriors? I think Not.
Samurai Warriors, a Japanese spin off of the game Dynasty Warriors, has taken the fans a new time place where war was truly a must, and the battle of supremacy and unification is in order. Based on the Sengoku (or the Warring States) period of 16th Century Japan, they give the historical and the casual gamers a new breath of fresh air to be playing from the anti-hero Nobunaga to the Justice-wielding Yukimura. The game did impress me as a Koei and a history fan. Good start.
Plot: The game concentrates more on the characters, much to the dismay on the historically accurate. It made sure their personalities are on different paths, yet stay still knit-close, unlike a full-kingdom story in DW4. (9/10)
Gameplay: The game play is Dynasty Warriors, itself. But the Battles are based on missions for a plus that makes the game harder yet more challenging. And how well one plays affect also on the outcome in the endings. (8/10)
Music: The Music was okay for its part. It wasn't a rocker-styled theme like Dynasty Warriors, and yet still feels Japan about it. (8/10)
Voices: The voices were a mild problem. Even if the voices matches most of the Dynasty Warriors Characters, some voices were very horrible. Ranmaru Mori, the game's token androgyny, for example. His voice had the right gender unlike his voice successors (who were later voiced by women), but it sounded high pitched and pretty much homosexual, giving away his character too early. But some voices fit well enough like Kunoichi's and Noh's. (5/10)
Characters: How they put in the characters give in to a anime-like feel. Where they have well-made personalities, and such. Oichi was still young in her looks then, and she has stunned me. So did Kunoichi and Goemon, but then, wondering how they got deleted in the sequel was a question. The designs were also good, sadly Nobunaga looked like a Black-clothed Superman, seeing...scary muscles. (8/10)
Overall: (8/10) To conclude, it gave a new face to the Fans who want more history, and it sure did make Koei well-received at some points. It takes Japanese history a whole new meaning of awesome.
Sengoku musô 2 (2006)
Well-made. A Sequel almost different to its Original.
Samurai Warriors 2 is apparently a good game that creates more challenges to whoever may be a die-hard Dynasty Warriors Fan. Unlike the Original, it has a better approach when it comes to characters, and actually tells stories of the other being to what they were usually known in modern times.
Gameplay is different from the first game, due to them having their own story lines. They also can use different abilities, to skills instead of the DW4-ish items in the first game.
The Characters had added well from the World-Famous Musashi to the Claimed underachiever Mitsunari. The designs were also well made, if you ask me.
The Unique Stories have been made to create more depth in human relations, but maintaining the historical significance and personality of the characters.
Voiced by Agile Sound, a Canadian Voice Acting studio on the rise, the voices of the characters were different, yet refreshing in a new way.
To conclude, a game with good challenges. Still a hack and slash, it may also give some good faithfulness to the First game. Call it a major upgrade.
Musô Orochi (2007)
Imaginative Crosover.
An avid fan of the Koei Games myself, Warriors OROCHI has yet good potential as a crossover. It actually made good ideas on how the two Worlds of Dynasty and Samurai Warriors come together. A Serpent King fused the Worlds, and it's up to the two Worlds to unite and slay the Demon. The Sequel is on the way, so it's a must.
Gameplay: It is once again your Hack and Slash Warriors Game, but added an innovative Twist: Three-Way Partying with different abilities and Styles depending on the Warrior you choose. Unlocking characters and items shows good promise to players to play more and power-up more. (9/10)
Graphics: Not bad. (7.5/10)
Sound: Reused sounds, but added some new ones. The J-Techno Rock Fusion on the new songs make good timing. (8/10)
Voice: The Only thing I feel like wrong is that some Voices in this game sound pathetic. It wasn't as smooth-voiced as DW5, or as right-keyed in SW2. Although some kept the old good voices, and some new voices are well made. (6/10)
Replay Value: It's almost an experiment on how you unlock items and characters with really fused stages. I can sense things here. (8/10)
In conclusion: This is certainly fictional. But it has good potential and some creativity to apparently made it enjoyable. Kudos to Koei for being very smart about this. The sequel will too, apparently.
Danny Phantom (2003)
Not an Action-Packed Cartoon as expected.
Danny Phantom is the same person who created the more imaginably real Fairly Odd Parents. The story revolves around a guy who is half-ghost, half human, fights monsters and ghosts and still wants to live a Normal life with his two best friends, a sidekick and the individualist"-turned love interest. This is how you meet TeenNick with Ghostbusters.
Well, the idea of the plot seems too obvious, which basically involves a teen hero who tries to create a double life. Though real high school isn't exactly as angst-ridden and stereotypical as Casper High, nothing truly significant happens but fight ghosts and your usual 2000's Nickelodeon teenager scenes. Danny learns new powers a few episodes pass by, has arch nemeses, more love interests, and the fight scenes. That's about it.
The fight scenes were basically a lack of detail, limiting themselves to power shooting, gadgets, and the occasional punches. Danny doesn't apparently have the physical strength, but he can try to train himself both physically, and socioeconomically. Sadly, I usually think he rarely trains, just his new powers pop-up by ghost fighting just like that.
The Jokes aren't even funny. Awkward scenes here and there, maybe a random romance sequence between friends. The animation seems okay, but not enough.
The theme is apparently concentrating on a more Grim feel, but I just can't see it. The contents in the cartoon look too vague, and they just come from thin air.
The characters are also one-sided. Even their "unique" characters look too one-sided. Not much on character development there. The only decent person I see in there was Maddie, Danny's mom, who is the one who didn't look pathetic, and is apparently the sane one. Kudos to her.
Apparently, the character that actually needed to be deleted was Sam Manson. She was the type of person who has been asserting herself to become the "perfectly independent girl" to Danny, who just magically gets her anyway in the end of the series. She was technically a hypocrite and a poser, and most of the episodes see her as trying to be different, only revealing to be quite useless in times of need. (see Naruto's Sakura.)
In conclusion, Danny Phantom may be a good plot, but the cutboard characters and the vague details will just make it what it is. Butch Hartman needs to research more about the ghosts and the characters. That is all.
Comment Rating: 2/10 (Because a few episodes made good ranks.)
Friends (1994)
The 90's version of the art of Escapism.
Friends is about 6 Friends who live in New York and have to solve all of life's problems to sex, to relationships, to... well... basically thats what its all about.
The idea contains the same old friendships, relationship, babies, love, marriage, job, and materialism. Nothing to contribute to society... never once I see the characters face real problems of debt, psychological torture, or identity crisis (Like Chandler experiencing what being Gay feels like for a day, or Rachel hanging with the poor. Or even Phoebe living in an asylum?) And about the racial cultures... Usually I never see them date anyone else other than a few colors to "liven" the space. Oh, the token black person that comes out one or two episodes is not helping either. Seeing as New York is full of culture, they made it look like the other races are not important.
Their lifestyle is perfect. They crapped money out of their really low-paying jobs and spend most of their time well, sipping their coffee, stalking about that hot guy or girl and plans to bang them later to the episode, ending with a break-up for the dumbest of reasons.
Aside from Chandler, their jobs are almost impossible to ask why their apartments costs more than what they earn. Well, Monica has "rent control" but hey... no one tried to kick her out yet... Ross is still controlling his money after all the divorces he has been in. Joey, Rachel, and Phoebe gave a speech on not taking charity, but hey, they suck the living breeches of the first three and claiming paying them back was almost impossible.
Okay, off with the plots, let's go to the characters...
Character analysis: Chandler - He is apparently one of the more humorous characters. He is a sample of a realistic person who we can hang out in the office or sip some coffee or something. I don't have problems with him and Monica together, to the dismay of all the true-blue Frendsian fans.
Phoebe - I like her for being a bit different in the first few seasons... but then after a while, she started being horny, annoying, and kind of a hypocrite. Okay, so she has a hard life... but people like her in real life, struggle to be as normal as possible. She just left that philosophy behind because of it. It's not even trying until the tenth season or so...
Monica - She isn't a funny character, but she has been a person who actually is believable in ways that she is right, and she is apparently the mature one. Sadly, she is usually looked down upon because her other Friends think that her style is annoying. Sadly, her baby-freak, "I can be like anyone else" philosophy threw me off after like season one. I always wondered why she wasn't kicked out of the circle.
Rachel - I hate her. She hasn't changed ever since day one, to be honest. Her personality is this "Me-Me-Me!" spoiled brat who went to the city, and a few jobs and a million boyfriends later... it's still all about "Me!" The relationship with her and Ross was somewhat annoying for and a mood killer for almost forever, and almost in the last episode of the series, BANG! They're together again. Can Ross just leave or slap Rachel for all the horrible things she has done to him? Oh Noooo... because Ross is too in "loooove" with Rachel... Reasons were almost to no idea... Having sexual thoughts with Chandler and almost having a short, useless hit-off with Joey was also not helping.
Ross - I pitied his first season philosophy and hey, I liked him for being at least sympathetic there... just that he had two additional divorces that he became a screaming, yelling, irritating person who is smart and intelligent, yet acts dumb and immature for his age. The whole Rachel thing is lost of chemistry and yeah, they were on a break. Rachel is apparently responsible for all of the things that happened to them and then claiming after the whole fiasco that the writers make it say that it's Ross' fault anyway for Rachel's doing. Ross would be better off on a suicide for being with a devil woman.
Joey - Dumb Actor who doesn't do anything to contribute to society. Oh yeah, his spin off may be the worst thing anyone has ever made... Even if I can feel things from the characters. He is a handsome guy, that's a contribution right? And Him having sex with 500 girls is considered a real good thing. In general, actors have to research their roles, and Joey... he just swoops in Shakespeare because hey... He's an actor!
To conclude, I have been annoyed by the show... and I get why people love it so much. It's the art of Escapism of them in a Fantasy world that makes everyone love them so. But sadly, I have watched shows that actually make use of real life as a humor tool that makes Friends forgettable for me. For ten years, nothing truly EVER happened.. and parodies like "Furends" are apparently more of a short version of the whole rant.
A 1 out of ten... Just because I can't give negative number rankings. :(
