Don't Look Up (2021)
We actually have two comets hurtling towards us
17 March 2024
The movie isn't satire, it's the hard reality. We have at least two extinction level scenarios unfolding before our very eyes, climate change and AI, and we're handling them exactly like how the comet is treated in this movie: playing down risks, denial, ridiculisation and downright greed.

This movie perfectly demonstrates the current state of our society. Politicians are more worried about their next elections than they are about running their country, businesses worry about their bottom lines and forget that ultimately society is all about humans. And us people, we're wasting all our valuable time watching our smartphones. Meanwhile when there really is a threat, we deny it exists. Or call it politically motivated.

Ultimately it'll be this stupidity and shortsightedness that might be our downfall.

One line from the movie hits home: "we really had it all"

Look kids, it's great being a drug lord
2 March 2024
Typical glorification of criminals "documentary". Show them in their fancy cars, with their pretty ladies, living in big houses, with their fake smiles and expensive lawyers. It really pays off being a criminal. This is the message the documentary seems to portray. None of the dark sides are shown. It's a very skewed documentary in favor of the criminals. The law enforcers they interview are portrayed as silly and whiney. Whilst the criminals are enjoying the interviews and laughing and pretending this is all been great fun. Great fun indeed all those countless murders that have been committed for their businesses to run properly. Great fun indeed that so many lives have been destroyed by their actions.

New Girl (2011–2018)
Two seasons in and not sure if I'll ever continue
2 March 2024
Not sure if I like it. The dialogs and situations just feel forced. And so does the interaction between the characters. Schmidt is a narcissist and for some reason people like those in series. I don't. Just as in real life, in my opinion you should stay away from these obnoxious people as far as possible. Winston is not more than an appendix. Without him I wouldn't miss a thing. Nick started off pretty good, but lately has resorted to mainly yelling at Jess for no apparent reason. It just feels forced, as that wasn't part of the character he started with. Jess and Cece are in my opinion the only two adults here and a have more interesting character development.

The topics are pretty boring and predictable: sex, getting laid, more sex, drinking, talk about sex, more drinking. It feels like the viewer is part of a frat house, only these people are in their early thirties. Not early twenties. Again it feels like a disconnection between the characters and their reality. The jokes are cheap and the yelling and ranting get predictable.

Perhaps I'll give it a few more episodes. But it's definitely not what I hoped it would be.

Way too speculative
6 September 2023
It starts off pretty good, but quickly descents into a very speculative realm. At one point they claim that these creatures had to use fire in the cave, otherwise they couldn't find their ways. Right, is this what rodents do when navigating caves? I haven't seen many torch carrying mice lately. Or, who knows, perhaps the cave layout changed in 250k years and used to be light coming from somewhere. All questions that popped in my head, none of which were answered.

There are no counter arguments whatsoever. These people love their jobs, that's obvious, but I'm missing a different perspective. A different take on their theories that could explain the observed as well. Now everything is presented as fact, which it clearly is not.

Whoever wants to eat an octopus after this, is missing three hearts
12 January 2022
Such an amazing documentary, told from four hearts, about an unlikely connection between a human and an octopus. What's amazing about this movie is that was capable of making me feel good about nature as well as humans. The mere fact that we both want to connect, just shows that there is a stronger connection between us and the animal kingdom than most of us realize. Absolute must watch...

Someone should explain EMPs to Hollywood
3 January 2022
An EMP capable of shutting down a whole city? But flashlights and train lights and jet fighters keep on working, magically. They probably don't use electricity... And an EMP that big could create massive electrical currents in all metal objects. Your gun becomes a Van de Graaff generator. Great fun when you touch something else afterwards. An EMP that big doesn't temporarily shut down electronics: it permanently disables it. Ruining all circuitry.

Yes, someone should explain EMPs to Hollywood.

White Lines (2020)
Started good, then fell off a cliff
9 June 2020
The series started good with a lot of humor and great scenes. But after a few episodes everything revolves around the usual: a romance, drama, sex, drugs, partying and the familiar drug cartel. The humor is mostly gone.

It doesn't help either that Axel, the guy that died 20 years ago, really doesn't invoke any affection at all with me. A typical arrogant macho man I couldn't care less about.

For some reason we are led to believe that all macho men in this series somehow have deeper feelings and like Mozart and write poems. Right. That kind of felt forced.

Long story short; it's entertaining for a few episodes and then becomes a chore.

Gotti (2018)
Boring
29 February 2020
Do I need to feel sympathy for this low life after seeing this movie? This is just another maffia glorification movie and a freaking slow and boring one.

Brimstone (2016)
Life can be like this
10 February 2020
It is interesting to see the shear amount of negative reviews here, while I think this movie portrays a very realistic scenario in a lawless US at that time. It still portrays a realistic scenario in some parts of the world today. Its unrelenting violence and utter hopelessness reminds me a lot of a famous novel by Kosinski: the painted bird.

If you came here to see your typical 100 in a dozen Hollywood happy ending movies, better move on to something different. Seriously. This movie will make you sad, hopeless and angry at the same time.

If you want to descent into the dark part of human-kind, here on full display in all its naked ugliness, go see it. It's masterful in my opinion.

Awesome film, but needed more moustaches
26 January 2020
Really enjoyed the film, but since moustaches were mandatory in the British army until 1916, I definitely expected to see a lot more facial hair in it. Most men were cleanly shaved. But that obvious fluke aside, I think it was a great movie

Boring
17 September 2019
I guess two episodes for me was enough; this one is just 99.9% mindless action and chasing scenes. The previous two piqued my interest, but at this one i was yawning and almost fell asleep.

Free Solo (2018)
Not all that inspiring
21 March 2019
I keep reading a lot of people calling this one inspiring. For me it was not. The achievement he did was amazing, but the guy itself is a bit hard to approach and cold. There is one section in the docu where he showed his true colors: "it's not about happiness but it's about performance." Sure, if that is your motto, go for it. For me that isn't inspiring at all.

Gomorrah (2014–2021)
Pretty good initially but repetitive later
1 March 2019
I guess a lot of people think this is realistic. I think it is not. The series started out pretty good and raw. But as the seasons pass, it's becoming more and more senseless killing. It's like watching GTA with all those random kills. Also the main characters keep dodging so many bullets that it's hard to believe they are still around.

Waste of budget and talent
15 February 2019
130 million budget but failed to hire a proper writer. Not going to waste more time on this piece of junk. Do yourself a favor and skip this.

American materialism pur sang
26 December 2018
There is no deeper message here; it's a guy fighting his way to get a doll for his kid. This is what it is all about in the USA: stuff and violence. A great movie to show your kid if those are the two things you value the most.

Breaking Bad (2008–2013)
Awesome at start, decent in the end
29 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion this series started out brilliantly on a very interesting premise. But later I think the series started to lose its own credibility. It suffered from the same fate a lot of series have these days: they throw in everything they got at the start to actually make an impression. But that leaves them with only so much for the remaining seasons.

*** CONTAINS SPOILERS BELOW ***

After a few seasons, you know the trick and you start wondering how Walter and his unstable friend can dodge so many bullets. His sidekick Jesse started to become really obsolete, and quite frankly annoyed me up to the point that I was actually praying for some gang member to end his life sooner than later. A guy that is constantly nagging and feeling so sorry for himself is only interesting for so long. After that he just becomes annoying. Personally I think this is a result of just dragging on for far too long with a series on a same premise. It becomes a one-trick pony. It would've served the series better if they'd cut it down a season or two.
