No Highway in the Sky (1951)
Amazing performance by Jimmy Stewart.
There are a lot of interesting aspects to this movie that make it a must-see: the plot, the character development, and the relationships that develop as the story unfolds. Beside great performances by Glynis Johns and Marlene Dietrich, the standout is Jimmy Stewart. The picture keeps you totally engaged
I've never seen any of his work quite like his role here. In 2023 terms, he's "on the spectrum". He nails the difficulties of being brilliant in a technical area, while totally frustrated in trying to convince others about the dire situation he has discovered. Because of his coming across to his bosses as a "boffin" (what we'd call a nerd today) nutcase, his concerns are dismissed out of hand. His genuine concern for two of the characters' safety is, fortunately, recognized by them. A very satisfying picture and one that makes you think.
All Creatures Great & Small: Surviving Siegfried (2022)
Probably the most moving episode so far.
We finally get some of Siegfried's back story, brought into the show's current timeframe. The opening sequence is powerful, and represents an accurate depiction of the situation at Ypres, and, later, the ramifications of the end of the Great War on the Western Front. Painfully written, it provides the context for the rest of the episode. Today, of course, there are no animals used for transportation, but the profound attachments formed between man and animal in wartime and afterwards is beautifully presented.
If the context interests you (as it should, if you're watching the show) be sure to investigate further the history of how the horses on the battlefield were protected from gas attacks.
Beauty and the Bull (1954)
Actually, it's pretty interesting.
Just watched this on TCM 8/22. Yes, on the surface it seems uninteresting, but, it shows how a fashion model, visiting Mexico, became a bullfighter in the early '50s. This was Bette's first film. She had a long career, including appearing in "Sudden Impact". Inspiring for a woman at that time to accomplish what she did.
Romance on the High Seas (1948)
A lot of fun with a great cast
The whole movie is worth the brilliant scene where Oscar Levant and Jack Carson drink at the bar waiting for Doris Day.
