The Lighthouse (2019)
I can't deny. I loved it.
It's dark and delicious in a very anxiety inducing way. I've now watched it twice and feel there's still more to explore in the movie. Both, Defoe and Patterson offer strong and hypnotising performances. It's a good movie a 10/10 from me.
The Village in the Woods (2019)
A Good Movie filmed in a Pub with a Very, Very Strange Dark History
First, the movie is a well constructed look at isolation. It's use of atmosphere and dread is well executed for a debut feature. It made me feel empty and alone. Not in a bad way, more just wilfully entertained. Something else that is of huge interest. The pub that was used in the movie, The New Inn. I know of because an old friend of mine for many years lived in Uckfield the town near by. This pub has a very, VERY strange history. Rumours circulated many years back that one of the former landlords in the 1990's held weird orgies and dark rituals above the pub. This apparently contributed to the decline of the pub's standing in the village. In the end this landlord went under and suffered serious hallucinations and horrible hauntings. My friend also says that the art work on the walls that we see in the film are actually from this landlord! These images were already in the pub. It's probably all rumour. If you are ever visiting the area, drop in to the pub. It's in a village called Hadlow Down in East Sussex. According to my friend, the atmosphere is super weird. It's run down like you've never seen and the old timer locals are very stand-offish like they themselves are out of a movie like the punters in, American Werewolf in London!
Frères ennemis (2018)
Revenge and Friendship
Tightly woven gangland thriller. The pacing was upbeat. For a crime based gangster piece it also has soul. Really appreciate the angle this was aiming for even if it does miss the mark in some areas.
Midsommar (2019)
I Wanted More
Sadly, I felt that this movie despite the hype surrounding it just didn't live up to it. It did have moments here and there. There was however at times just not enough to drive it along in horror. I get that the film isn't meant to be a straight horror and more a folk horror of sorts? All the acting was spot on. The whole production was slick maybe minus the rubber used for body parts. I did enjoy it. I just felt it could of moved along faster. All in all though Aster is making good steps to fishing a very unique voice. Something we need more of.
Beasts of No Nation (2015)
Enjoyed this one
Found it on Netflix. I've always liked Idris Elba. The director responsible for 'True Detective' which was great so I had high hopes. I wasn't let down either. It was worth the watch for sure. For me with an ever growing list of 'watch later' I'm glad I didn't add this one and watched it.
The Sopranos (1999)
All Time Fave
Wacthing this back in the day was great. It still is a striong show. I watched it again last year and fell for the great storylines and powerful characters. If you've not seen it yet. Do! 10/10 for me...
Ad Astra (2019)
Space Story
Well written, well performed... slow paced drama. I really enjoyed the energy of this piece. I read lots of comlaines about it but I don't see why people complain like this? It just seems stupid to me. Brad Pitt is great as always. Go see it.
The Irishman (2019)
VFX moving on Leaps and Bounds
Amazing use of the latest tech in this film. Yup you can see it, but still something is brilliant about it.
I really enjoed this movie.
