Star Wars: The Bad Batch: The Clone Conspiracy (2023)
Debates of pensions have never been so fun
I remember in the Clone Wars one of my favourite arcs is about banking conspiracies, so the fact that I'm enjoying conspiracies about pensions in this show isn't that surprising.
I love that we're getting an answer on what happened to the clones. I feel like large parts of the Bad Batch are formulaic and don't fully explore the era they are in, instead feeling like generic Star Wars. Then there are episodes like this, and the crosshairs one earlier in the season that are all about the vibes of the time it takes place in. Darker, grittier, following up on characters we haven't seen since the Clone Wars and seeing their reactions to the Empire.
While I would prefer all the episodes t be like this, I get that the Bad Batch is supposed to get kids involved in Star Wars and will usually stick to it's low tension adventures. That said I would eat up an entire tv show of stuff like this.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Obviously flawed, but was a lot of fun anyways!
I'm not going to pretend this is a perfect film, but it was a lot of fun. I saw this with the IMAX event and it was completely packed. I know reactions have been mixed-negative but the entire audience was super into this. I think it has the best musical score of the year so far, beating out The Batman.
The overall excellent sound design is held back by a couple exaggerated sound effects. Likewise the writing has lots of great stuff in it but is held back by plenty of weird choices and unnecessary lines of dialogue.
The performances were also overall really strong. Florence Pugh was sensational and Chris Pine was so charismatic. The entire supporting cast is great, especially Gemma Chan. There has been a lot of talk about Harry Styles being terrible, I don't think he is, I just think he is completely overshadowed by Pugh and Pine who he is on screen with all the time.
The twist worked for me, but the ending felt a little sudden. Overall it was carried hard by Pugh, Pine and the absolutely incredible score, but they were so good that I can't help but enjoy this movie despite it's obvious flaws.
Vengeance (2022)
Thematically rich podcast movie??
This was unexpected. I found this movie to be really funny and really dark at the same time. I left the theatre feeling kind of empty but with my mind racing. Vengeance is about a man learning he's a terrible person and it really doesn't shy away from that by the end of the film.
I can't stop thinking about how incredibly tightly written this dark comedy is. Every interaction has meaning thematically and to the story. From the very beginning every word means something. Yet it's hilarious until it isn't.
National Theatre Live: Prima Facie (2022)
Greatest performance I have ever seen
Jodie Comer is probably the best actress working today. She commands you to pay attention to what she's saying, successfully forcing me to enjoy learning about legal terminology before tearing my heart out and branding it with the message of the story.
The Gray Man (2022)
Fun and dumb
This movie is so much fun if you're not bothered by the overzealous cinematography. The characters are somewhat thin, but the acting is fantastic which more than makes up for it. If you're looking for a mindless action movie this is a good one to put on, and the spectacle of the action sequences means that watching it in theatres before it hits Netflix on the 22nd is absolutely worth it.
Before Your Eyes (2021)
A unique, emotionally devastating game
You play as a soul fished up by a ferryman who wants to bring you to heaven, but you must first tell him your story to see if you are worthy.
The game is controlled by your eyes, you can interact with the world by blinking, but you when the metronome appears at the bottom of the screen blinking will cause you to jump to the next vignette. The time spent with each memory is fleeting but sweet.
Play the game without knowing anything else and you will have a blast, but in case you're not convinced I've written about my experience with the game below. There are no spoilers for the story.
The story comes across as very human. You have choices to make that make small impacts, but it's relatively linear. You struggle at some points, you have massive success at others. The relationship with your mom is strained but loving and your dad is just an awesome guy.
Everything seems to be wrapped up nicely and I was thinking wow, that was a great game, but I was expecting more. And the I realize that the game is only half over.
A monologue begins, you don't realize it at first, then the buzzing starts, a cross between an angry behive and a buzzsaw, the screen begins to go red. The monologue becomes more forceful, more hurtful, the noises become overpowering as the monologue steadily rises in intensity. You feel the voice actor towering over you, belittling you.
After that vicious monologue key moments receive new context and you get pounded over and over again with emotional gut punches. Some moments are still sweet, but there is a lot of pain behind them. I have never broken down into tears playing a video game but I wept for half an hour after this was done.
This may have affected me a bit.
Should have won impact game at the game awards.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020)
Random, but enjoyable
I loved this movie, but it isn't for everyone. It's got a nonsensical plot and the humour is so random that not everyone is going to like it. It seems to be made more so for people who watched the series when they were kids and are now grown up than for kids now, many of the jokes didn't have much that a kid could grasp on to compared to the series and original movie (I haven't seen the second movie as of writing this review).
That said I had so much fun watching it, probably the most joyous time I've spent watching something this year, and fun is really what watching a Spongebob movie is all about.
