The Haunted Museum (2021)
Too many reviews focusing on personal grudges.
This is by all means an above average horror anthology. It has episodes that are stronger than others and some that fall too short but in comparison to many other horror anthologies it certainly stands above plenty.
Many judge this based on Zak and disregard the actual content of the episodes. There are some complaints to be held regarding cinematography, lighting, story and acting but both one by one and as a whole they have a common theme and feeling running through.
Don't go in expecting masterful horror, expect common themes and stories, some clichés but it has plenty of creepy moments while some episodes are genuinely great and creepy.
To comment on Zak, he is a persona that some don't click with. Personally I enjoy his antics with his team on Ghost Adventures even if ghosts don't exist, they have great chemistry while Zak individually has a perchant for being overly melodramatic and this can be argued here too.
All in all, I've enjoyed all episodes in some ways and some more than others. I'm in between a 6 and a 7, closer to a 7 than a 6 as I have enjoyed many of the episodes based on the horror element. As a series stacked up to others I'd say it's a solid 6.
Scare Me (2020)
Great horror comedy
There is a lot to unpack when it comes to the dynamic between the two main characters, their respective experience and views of the world, the stories told, the psyche behind horror writers and plagiarism.
It unfolds in a great way but ends on a somewhat weak but still solid note.
A lot of laughs but also builds great tension, the actors are what really holds this movie together even though the stories told is the punchline and their telling of them. The gleeful reenactment of their ideas and the uncertain motivations behind Fred's deceitful bumbling floundering persona, Fannys headstrong no nonsense which gives way to some vulnerability but she never stops in her steps.
Their setbacks although different have given them two totally different branching paths of seeing their future, one wallows in their depression while the other never lets it hold them back.
If your story has been done you just have to do it better or die off skewered by yourself, alone.
Great concept, better than I expected and lovely acting.
Castle Rock: Romans (2018)
Funny...
How so many didn't really follow the story.
Few series in such a long time has both gripped me and left me wondering, wanting to see what comes next and actually wanting to follow the whole season through.
The ending to top it off explains more than most want to see it seems, it is a cherry on top of a well dressed cake. It is small but it ties it together, it leaves you wanting more yet it is what you get.
All in all the ending is what disappoints the most, yet for me I left satiated. It is not what is left in the end, it is what preceded it all.
Not everything has to be a cake on a cake, not everything has to be handed to you just to fill your stomach. It is that dessert to finish it off leaving you to feel either bitter or sweet and it was a bit of both for me.
That hint at the end just left me smiling, knowing there was both more and less to the story.
You might not agree but it left me with much to ponder and I was glad.
