The Extra (2000)
One of the most clever shorts I've ever seen...
I saw "The Extra" ahead of the film, "The Man Who Wasn't There". "The Extra" parodies those unctuous newspaper advertisements which run before every theatrical film here in Los Angeles. Director/Producer Philip Pucci does a masterful job of juxtaposing breathy poetic narration by actor, David Avallone, who is marvelous as the extra who tries much too hard, against slapstick scenes of Avallone as a "Zelig" like extra who has appeared in every major film in Hollywood since "The Wizard of Oz".
I look forward to more work from Philip Pucci. He is obviously incredibly talented and able to create a marvelous job of manipulating the audience into feeling they were watching a true advertisement. Every aspect of this film is perfect. The cinematography by M. Dietrick Schumacher, the sound, and music compilation by Jeff Taylor, and Avallone's performance. I shall follow this director's career closely as he clearly has much more to share with us. Pucci is a true craftsman.
