The Fall Guy (2024)
What a fun movie!
Really enjoyed this film. Exactly what it appears to be. Fun. Fast. Funny.
On a sour note, the old Fall Guy song was suppose to be the closing credits, but it's an awful bubble gum country version. Different and awkward lyrics as well. Lee Majors Sang the old the song with style. Waste of a great opportunity.
Anyway. The cast is quite good. Nice chemistry between the leads. Decent supporting cast as well.
Obviously amazing stunt work. Just, wow. Really some of the coolest crazy stunts I have seen in a while.
Overall, I tested this very high. Again... Exactly what was advertised and expected.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Zach Snyder is not good at movie making
This film is just not at all good.
Over acted like crazy. Did they all do a William Shatner acting class just before filming began?
The plot is over used and the only 'surprise' was so obvious that you couldn't even call it a spoiler (even though I won't say it here).
There is no time spent getting to care about any character. They are all basically cardboard NPCs. I couldn't care less if any of them lived or died.
The scenery was pretty cool and they have created a tangible world that feels lived in. For that one reason it gets a few stars.
I can't believe people still think Zack S can make good films.
Napoleon (2023)
Snore
This was almost good... But it fell short in to many areas.
1. Plodding pace. Whether you know all about Napoleon or not, this film just doesn't change pace ever. You never root for the guy, or against him, or even care. It's like a documentary, but less accurate.
2. The lead. One tone throughout? Blah. I thought he was a better actor. I assume now that Napoleon had one mood and stayed in it for his whole life.. bored.
3. I never got a sense of grandeur. Even the big battle scenes were boring. This was the world's greatest strategist? I guess, but it wasn't evident, or at least it wasn't well explained.
S few hours I won't get back. Should have just read his Wikipedia page.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Doesn't make sense
This whole movie takes place in the spam of a few months?
So much happens, it's just not rational. Was that changed just to avoid carrying a kid to play Alia?
The look of the film is again amazing. Denis V really knows how to make a visual masterpiece. But there was an awful lot of posing in cinematic ways. It got a bit silly, to be truthful.
Also the language was annoying. Subtitles for half the movie? For a made up language? Just speak English so your audience is more involved. Everyone I was with said the same thing. I watch subtitled foreign films, but this was just pure vanity.
So, be prepared for lots of long shots of desert with loud chanting, gorgeous scenery, and a plot that almost makes sense.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
Awful CGI mess
I can't believe anyone paid to see this movie.
So much bad... where to start... Some of the worst CGI I have ever seen. I mean peoples faces change when they switch from real to CG and it's so obvious and poorly done. I cringed so much.
The story is silly and just makes random connections that will hopefully move the story along, who cares if it makes any sense.
Even the basic rules of the ocean that were introduced when Aquaman debuted don't even count anymore. Like talking in water without making an air pocket.
What was good? The backgrounds and colours were interesting and gave the film some ambiance. That's about all
Please skip it
Obliterated (2023)
Crazy. Start to finish.
Those was unexpectedly fun.
I honestly couldn't stop watching until I saw all episodes. Finished in one sitting basically.
Lots of nudity, but fit once it was equal. Lots of dick. Lots of boobs. Lol. Every character had a sexual story and they were all valid and different and fun to watch.
I also liked that the team all seemed to care fot each other, even if they expressed that in some truly nutty ways. It was a fun ride to be on.
No spoilers here, but there twists and turns were all pretty good and the end was worth the wait.
Big extra props to the cast. Super diverse without feeling like they were forced to make it diverse. All mostly likeable. And hot!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Him (2002)
Great future stars!
Some great future stars in this episode, plus the last 10 minutes are some of the most fun any Buffy episode has ever had.
Towards the end it get fun.... 4 gals in split screen with hilarious hijinx going on all over the place.
.. a background fight with a rocket launcher
.. some robberies
.. sex change magic
Future stars: Riki Lindhome has been a favourite of mine for years, and seeing her here so young is pretty cool.
Angela Sarafyan From Westwood fame also as a high school kid. Those eyes.
Add in some classic Jonathan and his friends stuff and you have a winner.
Probably top 20 episodes of Buffy ever. Not top 10, but close.
The Marvels (2023)
This was a fun movie
Why all the hate? I can't figure that out at all. I really enjoyed this film.
Iman Vellani really steals the show with her charm, and the people playing her family had just the right amount of love and fear to make their contribution to the movie worthwhile.
The effects were markedly better than Quantumania, the story was (kind of) about space aliens killing planets... but still seemed more grounded than Wakanda Forever, and it was easier to follow than Dr Strange MoM. This was better than all of these.
Negatives... the villain was meh. But the story wasn't about that so much as it was about each of the main characters and their journeys.
Can't wait to see it again.
Old Dads (2023)
Fell short of my hopes
Take some of the absolute funniest people on the planet and don't give them time to shine. That's a problem.
This movie was kinda funny, had a great cast, and even a decent premise. It just tries hard to make everyone happy, which is not the comedy of Bill Burr or of the others. Natasha Leggero is wasted. She has the non-funny role? She's amazingly funny.
I actually laughed out loud 1 time near the end. Won't spoil anything, but a good throwback to earlier in the film makes a cute moment.
The rest of the movie was ok at best. Mildly funny. Inoffensive for sure. Too bad... just when Bill Burt is getting riled up and being his best, he gets shut down.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
A bit of a disappointment
I went into this film with great expectations. I even made an effort to forget Ms Wright's covid nuttiness.
The acting was mostly quite good, especially Angela Bassett.. of course. Winston Duke (M'Baku) was again very charming and likeable, but also wise.
The whole ironheart addition seemed awfully convenient and too quickly moved from basic idea to 'just as good as iron man'. Nothing developed with her. Very weak character poorly written.
I did like Namor's portrayal and the spin the movie put on him. He was mad and powerful, but at the very end seemed almost evil, which was wrong. He's a jerk in the comics, for sure. And he cares for his people above all, but evil... nah.
Overall it was just a bit weak and predictable. What everyone loved about Black Panther was the heart, and this felt mostly flat after the first 20 minutes or so.
Infinite (2021)
Just too stupid.
Spoilers....
What a dumb movie! The bad guy wants to stop being re-incarnated. So he's gonna end the world. ... but he literally carries around a gun that kills toy and stops re-incarnation. ... like WTF? Shoot your self and end your pain?
Anyway the acting is over the top and silly. Good actors totally overdoing it. Almost comical at times.
A few decent action scenes. Some hot people.
Oh, and don't think about the dates too much. Somehow you have to believe that Mark Walberg is in his 30's, not his late 40s. He's noticeably older than people who are supposed to be the same age.
Please watch something else. Lol. Maybe if it had some nudity :p.
House of the Dragon: Driftmark (2022)
Looks great, no substance
Looks just as good as the better produced GOT episodes. Feels like a lived-in world.
Also, most of the acting is superb.
But... I don't care about any character in this. They are all kinda ...meh.. even Matt Smith, who is awesome in this, can't make me care about his character.
Then they changed half the cast after 5 shows, and I care even less. I hadn't read spoilers, so I was super confused for a bit. They replaced the only slightly likeable actor with someone more boring.
Anyway, I stopped watching. I think the good reviews are mostly people who love the acting and production values. There is certainly no character development to be found.
House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
Meh
Episode 1... High budget, obviously. I was looking for a character to care about but none seemed interesting or unique.
Looks good but overall kinda boring.
Appaloosa (2008)
Almost hits the mark
Good movie, good chemistry between the 2 leads, and beautifully shot.
Renee Z has no chemistry and the bad guy has no noticeable motive.. I guess he's just a dick?
Plus the narration at the start and end is poorly done.
2149: The Aftermath (2016)
Good film with bad monologue
I really liked this. Not an action film, just a good pace. Decent acting and plot for the budget.
Just an annoying monalogue that seems completely useless. It just explains what we already figured out.
tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Amazing heart and great performances
I loved Andrew Garfield in this! He was so likeable, passionate, frantic, and more. And some chops too! Great voice
The supporting cast was even better. Great singing and tons of heart.
I am a devoted Rent-head, and this was so amazing to watch!
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Enjoyable, but felt rushed
I enjoyed this show a lot. It had great actors, fun stories, and changed enough plot points to keep me super interested... nobody wants a shot for shot remake, lol
What is missed, and maybe the most important part of the original, was the general slow pace and sense of ennui that the original made the audience feel.
Also, it got to the BIG plot very fast. I guess to make an exciting 10 episode conclusion. I hope it slows down for season 2 and let's us enjoy the listlessness.
No Time to Die (2021)
Exciting movie. Trashes the franchise
Great stunts, effects, action and of course, good looking people.
Then... they kill Felix? He was in DrNo. What the f?
Then... they kill Bond?
Trashed the whole franchise in one move.
Otherwise, good film. Lol.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Just bad. List to follow, lol
Overacted, senseless, never cared about any character, dumb props, new invented powers?, bad action, planes that have infinite fuel, planes in 1918 are the same as military jets?, it was never funny, Thor Colors without Thor quality, stupid ending.
Post credits... that chick was the hottest thing around in the 80's, now so much surgery that she can't even speak properly... yuck
Good: Gal is hot. Kristin is always entertaining.... and pretty hot herself.
Little Birds (2020)
Almost great
Love the colors, cinematography, and the acting. It's a very vivid pallet and beautiful to watch.
Unfortunately, it's a bit slow and there are just too many sub plots. Easy to lose interest.
Juno Temple is excellent, as she always is.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
So long. So pretentious
If you want worse action, long cheesy slow music 'moments' every 10 min, and useless additions... you will love this.
Pros: more back story for 1 character, a bit more explanation of the villains motives, and the silly Russian family was cut
Cons: uselessly long, boring, bad music, somehow Wonder Wiman looks old, worse costumes, bad effects, worse dialogue, and no tempo at all
Joss Whedon is just better at making interesting movies... this is an ode to one mans ego.
Ps: if Joss had 4 hours to fill, THAT movie would have been a masterpiece!
The Assistant (2019)
Understated and slow, yet gripping
I loved Julia Garner in this film. Very little dialog throughout, but her subtle emotions come through well.
90% of this movie is boring office tedium, and I was still glued to the screen. Well done. Far exceeded my expectations.
Ad Astra (2019)
Haunting and slow, it still held my attention
Good acting, beautiful colors and sound. Well thought out small details that help with the realism. I was hooked start to finish.
... except for a few unbelievable parts that are outrageous and just for show, unfortunately. Scenes that are eye candy and kinda neat, but utterly impossible.
Ready or Not (2019)
So much better that I expected!
I was either grossed out, giggling, cheering, or nervous throughout. Just a fun ride start to finish.
Most of the cast was quite good, if a bit one dimensional. But that's to be expected. Great lead, 2-3 very solid performances.
Fun gore!
The OA (2016)
Beautiful and weird
Couldn't stop watching for a moment. I really wish they had the ability to tell the whole story.
It got weirder every episode, and more awesome.
The last episode of season one was goofy as hell, and I was almost cheering out loud, lol
