When you write a review you are meant to do just that, review it. So please can people stop writing the synopsis of the movie over and over, that is already done, we don't need to read it re-worded umpteen different times over and over.

This film is good, a little dated, but solid plot and reasonable acting (for the most part) make up for it. I got a hold of it as I thought it was a Sci-fi movie, it sort of is, but probably more comedy than Sci-fi. Still it is a reasonable flick and it is quite light viewing which sometimes can be a welcome break.

Enjoy.

Very intelligent movie.
10 June 2012
This is a very intelligent and well made movie. Everything is good about this movie. It's not ground breaking and the subject has been done a lot, but this movie really shows time travel in a different way to the usual flicks. I thought the acting was great, the visuals and the sound all good and the plot was pretty solid. It is a thought provoking movie (well most time travel movies are aren't they..) but it will leave you wondering a long time after the movie has finished for better or worse, whether you understand what happens or not, which I would say you would only understand if you have a degree in quantum mechanics. But either way, it's a great film whether you are into the Scifi/Fantasy genre or not. It is a great movie anyone can watch and will create some serious discussion afterwards! Enjoy!

It melted my brain.
10 June 2012
This movie is hardcore. It will hurt your brain, make you think deeper than ever before and force you to watch it again. I DEPLORE watching the same movie twice, but I feel I will have to with this movie just to make sense of a few more things, but on this occasion I think I will find it enjoyable watching a movie a second time. Yes there are issues, sound quality is a little shaky in places, they speak so fast also which compounds the audio issues, but I found the picture and cinematography perfectly acceptable considering the budget this movie had. But really this movie is all about the concept and the plot. I think if this movie was remade with a big budget, a well thought out cast but kept the core feeling of the movie, it would be a masterpiece as it is certainly a cult film as it is. Yes it does feel a bit cut and shut sometimes due to the guy making the film on his own and over a long period of time I imagine the shooting, cutting and post editing took. But I would recommend this movie to anyone who feels they have the brain capacity to stick with it even when you feel totally lost watching it. This movie demands 110% attention span, if you can't give it that, then don't watch it or you won't get it whatsoever. But those that do stick with it will be rewarded by thought provoking a long time after the movie has finished.

Interesting
6 May 2012
Difficult to pigeon hole this movie. Yes it is Sci-fi, but it is such deep thought provoking sci-fi that it is really in a genre all of it's own. I quite liked it. But I can understand why people didn't, it is a thinkers film, played out at quite a slow pace and not everything that happens in the movie is actually explained so the more simple movie goers amongst us will struggle with it. But for everyone else, it is worth a watch, but not for a movie night with friends round. It is much better watched alone in a dark room. I give it 7 out of 10. I can't really pick out many flaws and especially not without including spoilers so I will just leave it to the viewer to make his or her own mind up.

Good movie to educate Non-Norwegians
25 June 2011
I just watched this film. I had no idea really what the film was about, I had never heard of Max Manus.

I had high hopes after reading the reviews here, but maybe having high hopes made this movie fail a little for me.

It was good, but I feel a little confused about many things. I will not go into the details here, but I just feel the film should have been longer. Everything just happens without much explanation (I think it is made in such a way assuming that the viewers already know the facts, but alas, outside of Norway nobody knows anything about the Norwegian resistance) so many times I was left wondering.

I would have liked to have learned about Great Britain (especially Scotland) and how the relationship between them and Norwegian resistance was formed and how they travelled between the countries. I know at one point fishing boats from Scotland were rescuing people from Norway, but I have never seen this depicted in a film.

But over all, this was a good film, very beautiful cinematography and very well acted. It was nice to hear Norwegian too, I don't understand it, but it added to the authenticity of it and really made you feel a connection with the gang.

Cringeworthy
14 March 2011
I have watched this show a lot over the years and grown quite fond of it so believe it or not I was quite looking forward to watching the movie when it came on TV. Well within the first 20 minutes I knew something was wrong. The characters don't bond like in the show, there is no natural cohesion among the characters, it is like they are trying too hard and you can see right through this false acting. The plot was woeful. Why did they have to continue the movie where the show left off? Why couldn't they make the movie entirely independent? Or even a prequel to show how the characters met in the first place? The product placement was embarrassing, the jokes were awful and the majority of the film someone was sulking. Also the token black person was embarrassing, why do movies do this???? I loved the Cosby show and Fresh prince I didn't want a white person thrown in to make me happy! It insults everyones intelligience that they do this! 1/10 this movie. The fact it has an average rating above 5 shows that some people really are dumb who watched it.

Its like a Jewish Donnie Darko only weirder
11 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I had no idea this was a Jewish film, I had no idea the couple at the beginning were speaking Jewish, I thought it was Ukrainian or something.

I have no idea about Jewish religion, I have never met a Jewish person and I have no idea about the book of jobe. Maybe Jewish religion is big in America, but in Europe (UK & Scandinavia anyway), it's non-existent.

Ergo, I found most of this film baffling especially the end. Also, I don't like the way the movie portrays non-jews as a lesser or inferior being.

If millionaire writers/directors who are bored and decide to self indulge in a little movie about their religion, there should be a disclaimer on the box.

Before thousands of Jewish people get offended; This isn't a derogatory poke at Jewish people, the movie could of been about any religion, Sikh, Hindi, Catholic, the same principle applies. "If you are unfamiliar with this religion then you will not understand most of the plot". I want my two hours back.

Severely lacking plot and fluidity
3 January 2011
Rather than watching this movie and complaining about how much they left out from the book and saying how annoyed I am that they let me down. I choose to look at it from another perspective, at least I have read the book and I know the full story, if they leave bits out (which they have, in droves) then I know the actual story so I can fill the blanks (which there are many!) with the information I acquired from the book.

So in my opinion, I feel sorry for Harry Potter fans who went to watch this and have not read the book, because there is so much more going on, there are so many more tales to tell and much more information given to the reader than this movie portrays. And I mean, A lot! To the movie itself, it would seem all the finances went into the effects and not much else because the plot is wafer thin (as mentioned most of the important information from the book is discarded), there is no fluidity throughout the film (it's very stop start) and there is no character cohesion like in the previous movies. It seems like it was cut and edited in a hurry and a lot of scenes were left out that could have gel'd the movie together much better.

I mark it 4/10 in my unbiased view of the movie. Otherwise I would mark it 1/10 due to the complete abomination it has made out of the book. If the movie makers wish to use a books title to sell movies, they should really be forced to use 90% of the books contents.

Good, but had the potential to be so much better.
26 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I will start by stating this is a review about a movie, not about the conflict itself. I am sick of reading peoples personal opinions on the conflicts themselves, this site is about discussing movies not actual conflicts so you should watch a movie with a neutral standing. And you should certainly post without prejudice, because at the end of the day, it is just a movie!

Although I watched this movie and to an extent enjoyed it, I can't really recommend this movie to anyone. Again let me illustrate the fact I am basing all my opinions on the movie itself, not the war it is based on! I don't wish to offend anyone, but the characters were mostly annoying, there was no cohesion amongst the soldiers or the commanding officers and the soldiers didn't for one second convince me that they were soldiers. Added to this there was zero discipline shown which even the poorest American war movie has a little of. I'm not sure if it was poor casting or poor script but it was unconvincing. And to me this was a let down.

This is a 90% drama 10% action war movie, which needs seriously good plot, scripting, acting and very strong characters to keep you enthralled. It almost pulls it off, but there is something missing, as such this is a good movie - not a great movie. Also if the film was made to showcase the little known war, then it failed, because I am non the wiser now as I was before the movie. Also, these guys went deep into enemy lines to do re-con yet I failed to see any re-con being done? And the only way they could get word back to HQ was to send injured people back?

I am married to a Finn so I watched this because I am interested in Finland, however to anyone who doesn't have ties to Finland, I think this is just another uneventful war movie. Which there are hundreds if not thousands of. Although as I said, this movie had the potential to be great, but something let it down, I can't put my finger on what, but after the movie I was left a little empty inside. For this reason I rate it 7 out of 10.

It is worth a watch, but I couldn't say to people "wow, you must watch this film" because it brings nothing new to the table, there is nothing here that stands out or that hasn't been done before.

Superb
12 July 2009
Having recently watched all 3 Underworld films, this one is by far the best in my opinion. In HD it is simply awesome, the sound effects are awesome too.

I usually shy away from Vampire/Werewolf films due to them usually being rubbish, however this one is done fantastically. This movie throws wave after wave of different emotion at you, which I have found incredibly rare in recent movies. The plot is also solid, with many twists that do keep you wondering just what is coming next. The casting is good, although it still makes me laugh that evil henchmen still have cockney accents in most Sci-fi/fantasy films.

I recommend this movie to anyone. I only wish there was another Underworld coming soon as they really seem to be getting better with age.

Hammer House of Horror: Carpathian Eagle (1980)
Season 1, Episode 9
5/10
Only to be considered as late night viewing when there is nothing else on TV!
2 November 2008
I don't think that having a beautiful actress saves this film. It is patchy at best. I believe it was filmed in 1980 however I was sure it was 1960's due to the production values! Although, maybe I am being unduly harsh as most films from the 80's were poor so this fits right in. This movie has been done to death (exuse the pun) a thousand times over and there is nothing new or different here.

I'm not sure if they were cashing in on the hammer name on this one. Which is a shame because all it is doing is making a mockery out of the original Hammer series.

Funny to see a young Piers Brosnan though!
